Ocean-dwelling bacteria may have vacuumed up carbon and halted a period of extreme warmth some 56 million years ago, according to a study published April 13 in Nature Geoscience: http://ow.ly/vMh4Z

The finding suggests how Earth might once have rapidly reversed a runaway greenhouse effect. However, rapidity is relative: The bacteria would be far too slow to head off today’s human-caused climate impacts. Credit: Z. MA ET AL/NATURE GEOSCIENCE

Can you guess what the yellow stuff in this image is?

It's the plague! Yersinia pestis or the bubonic plague bacteria (yellow) are shown in the digestive system of a rat flea (purple).

Although we might think of plague as a thing of the past, there are still outbreaks around the world, and scientists have created a vaccine to help stop it!

Omg...a pregnant Kiwi bird 😳

Kiwi eggs are huge - they're six times bigger than other birds of a similar size!

After the female lays their egg, they take a much needed break and the males look after it until it hatches.

This green algae is one of the largest single celled organisms known. 😮

Each individual 'umbrella' of this delightfully whimsical and delicate green algae is one giant cell, with a single nucleus at the base of its roots. Recently discovered in India, it was named Acetabularia jalakanyakae - goddess of the oceans - because it looks like mini decorative mermaid parasols. 🧜‍♀️ ⛱️

A dazzling but miniscule glimpse into the stunning array of beetle diversity! 😍

There are three times as many beetles species on our planet than animal species with backbones (vertebrates). Plus, get this - every fourth animal on Earth is a beetle. 😱

Nadine Dijkstra, a neuroscientist and psychologist, led a study that suggests the brain mixes perceived images and imagery in our mind’s eye, then evaluates the result. “When this mixed signal is strong or vivid enough, we think it reflects reality.”
