"In the years after the world war that ravaged the Ottoman Empire, Hassan left his native village in modern-day Lebanon to join his parents and siblings in the growing Midwest town of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. To do so, he had to sidestep the stringent immigration quotas newly implemented by the US. But years later, when the authorities learned that he entered and was living in the US illegally, he was threatened with deportation. Through Hassan's story, we'll learn about the experience of Arab migration to the United States and get to know the Syrian-American community that despite numbering in the hundreds of thousands by the 1920s, found itself repeatedly compelled to prove its worthiness to be included in a society where nativism was on the rise and being entitled to full citizenship often meant being considered white."

Check out this engaging piece on the history of US immigration restriction as it affected immigrants from the former Ottoman Empire. How do you deport someone back to an empire that no longer exists? Why were certain ethnic groups targeted more than other groups who had entered the United States under the exact same conditions? What was the rhetoric of inherent cultural differences that fueled immigration policy and was it influenced by racism, nationalism, and/or politics?
This episode includes audio of American political speeches and debates of the era, interviews with historians of migration, and a concise overview of exclusionary immigration laws.

"As temperatures rise, the cedars’ ecological comfort zone is moving up the mountains to higher altitudes, chasing the cold winters they need to reproduce. But here in the Barouk forest, part of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, south of Beirut, there isn’t much farther up to go. If the climate warms at the rates expected because of the continued rise of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, some scholars say that by 2100 cedars will be able to thrive only at the northern tip of the country, where the mountains are higher.
In the north, though, there are different problems. Lebanon’s densest cedar forest, the Tannourine Cedars Forest Nature Reserve, has lost more than 7 percent of its trees to insect infestations unknown before 1997. They are directly tied to a warming, drying climate."
Climate Change Is Killing the Cedars of Lebanon Global warming could wipe out most of the country’s remaining cedar forests by the end of the century.

The Global Middle East club is hosting a Movie Night, screening the documentary “Five Broken Cameras” this Friday June 8, from 7-9 at Newport Beach Room A located at Student Center level 4 Room # G412.
The documentary Five Broken Cameras is co-directed by Palestinian Emad Burnat and Israeli Guy Davidi. It is a first-hand account of protests in Bil'in, a West Bank village affected by the Israeli West Bank barrier.
"Gershon Shafir discusses why this occupation has lasted for so long in the West Bank and how “the Occupation” has differed from earlier forms of settler colonialism in Israel-Palestine. In particular, we focus on the state of “permanent temporariness” that the Israeli government has purposefully inculcated in the face of international law and the emergence of a specific movement of religious-nationalist settlers. At the end, Shafir contemplates how the Occupation has changed the larger Arab-Israeli conflict itself and, by means of a feasibility study, suggests a variety of different visions for the future of the area."

Islam had first come to China via trading routes during the Tang Dynasty and Sinicized Arabic calligraphy was gradually developed as an art form. Haji Noor Deen who hails from Shandong, bears the fruits of historical cross cultural fertilization and articulates them in his own unique style in contemporary times.
He will be teaching a workshop next week on Tuesday, Wednesday from 6 to 9 pm in HH251 and Thursday 7:30-9:30 pm in HG 1030. Please see the link attached for more details and to register for the event.

What is East and West anyway? The boundaries have shifted over the course of history. Are the reasons for the shifts more political or ideological? Can a given country simply jump out of its designated surrounding geography by simply being a powerful political or economic ally to whoever draws the boundaries? Maybe all of this is bu****it.... or is there some utility in the idea of East and West, at least in terms of understanding how key figures of influence perceive and act in the world?
