The National Skills Coalition and the Business Leaders United convened a "Healthcare Industry Recovery Panel" of experts in local communities. The Regional Health Care Sector Board met last month to network, discuss, share strategies, and brainstorm healthcare topics. The board includes diverse employer reps, from small to large, rural and urban, and most types of health care employers. Community partners and educators also attend and participate on the board.

Our meeting included a roundtable learning exchange discussing successful innovations that our organizations have implemented since Covid to attract employees to health care.

Workplace Learning Connection (WLC), a department of Kirkwood Community College, connects students and educators within the Grant Wood Area Education Agency with local businesses and organizations in an effort to develop our future workforce through relevant, quality work-based learning experiences. In the 2019-2020 school year alone, WLC helped 3,786 students explore health care careers through job shadows and internships.

Healthcare is one of WLC’s most requested fields for career exploration experiences. New Imaging Technology at Mercy Offer the Latest Advancements for Cancer Diagnoses
Mercy's Hall-Perrine Cancer Center has invested in the latest imaging technology for cancer detection and radiation treatment planning. The technology includes a new digital PET-CT scanner, as well as a CT simulation scanner and planning system. This cancer-fighting technology is the most advanced in Cedar Rapids and, when combined, provides unrivaled image quality, as well as faster scan times and a lower radiation dose for patients. By overlaying the PET-CT scan and the CT simulation scan, Mercy radiation oncologists are able to outline the cancerous area so that treatments can be more accurately targeted to the tumor and the dose to nearby healthy tissue can be reduced. And, because the new technology provides clearer imaging, Mercy’s oncology team will be able to identify disease sooner and with more precision, which will improve patient outcomes.

According to the US News and World Report, Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) rank number 1 and 3 for Best Jobs, respectively, and 1 and 2 for Best Healthcare Jobs in 2021. ARNPs, and PAs, are collectively referred to as Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). APPs provide care for patients in clinics and in hospitals, including intensive care units and operating rooms.
