M. Ellen Zerr for St. Charles City School Board

M. Ellen Zerr for St. Charles City School Board

Member of the St. Charles MO Board of education since 2020. Former Chemistry teacher at SCW and SCHS. I have served as a School Board member since June, 2020.

This is my personal page, and I do not speak for the Board of Education. My top priority is to ensure that all students receive the best possible education, knowing that "best possible education" looks different for each student. I am skeptical of the value of standardized tests as a measure of the quality of education. I know that next to the students, the teachers play the most important role in the school district. I am solidly pro-public education.

It is with humility and gratitude that we celebrate the results of Tuesday’s school board elections. All ten of the candidates endorsed by St. Charles County Families for Public Schools were successful.

We congratulate Brad, David, Steven, Carolie, Eric, Steve, Tommy, Gabriel, Heidi and Ellen for their hard work and devotion to the community we love and call home.

We extend our respect and best wishes to all of the candidates who filed for office and offered their service in the manner they feel is appropriate.

It has been a pleasure to work with so many selfless volunteers and allied organizations who gave of themselves to keep St. Charles County strong and prosperous by supporting public education.

The winners in this election are the families and students of St. Charles County. Our immense gratitude goes out to the teachers and staff who comprise our public schools and provide their labor of love every day in classrooms across our county. You bring us together and we thank you.

Why I am running for reelection:
In short, to help make a great school district even better. I have learned a great deal about the workings of the school district in my 4 years on the board, despite teaching in the district for 18 years.
I reject the narrative about “failing public schools”. Public schools have improved so much over the years. For example, we did not have the opportunity to take AP classes, PLTW, or advanced math and physics classes when I was a student at SCHS.

Here’s why you should vote for me. I have already talked about my experience on the board.(scroll down if you missed it) A second reason is my endorsements. I have been endorsed by the Tri-County Labor Club, St. Charles County Families for Public Schools, and most importantly, The St. Charles Education Association (which represents the teachers)

I say most importantly because I taught in the school district for almost 20 years and I know many of the teachers personally. Their trust in my ability to help guide the district means a lot to me.

It takes years to learn how to be an effective school board member. Although I have served on the board for less than 4 years, there are only 2 current board members who have served longer than I. I am still actively working to improve my governance skills and knowledge.

Last week the Board approved the memorandum of understanding for a health clinic to be located at Blackhurst Elementary. The clinic will be operated and staffed by Compass Health (formerly known as Crider)
The clinic will accept private insurance, Medicaid, and will be on a sliding scale for students who are uninsured. You may have heard a rumor that parental consent won’t be required. That is completely untrue. The expectation is that parents will be present for their students to receive healthcare.
Services to be provided include sports physicals, state required vaccinations, general and primary care, and acute care.
