Day 1 of 2 of Walk4Mom was today! Awesome turn out of family and friends as we walked Mom’s favourite route around Professor’s Lake in Brampton.
Thank you all again for your donations to this Walk4Mom Pancreatic Cancer Research campaign.
We have made the $11,080.58 donation ($50 was added without GoFundMe) to the Terry Fox Foundation's EPPIC (Enhanced Pancreatic Profiling for Individualized Care) Project. All of the funds, minus the GoFundMe admin fee, were donated directly to this cause.
We are so happy that Mom generated so much love and support from this intiative. She was amazed when she heard it was over $10,000.
The next step is Walk4Mom Days (July 4 and July 5, her birthday), so if you received a shirt (or will be receiving one) wear it proudly and spend it with your Mom, or in remembrance.
Also take a moment to raise awareness about the devastating impact that pancreatic cancer has on individuals and their families/friends.
We hope that this Silent Killer is brought to justice one day... this is a step towards that goal.
Walk Days 4 Mom will be Sunday July 4 and Monday July 5 (Mom’s Birthday).
We decided to do two days to allow people to have time to visit their favourite trail for a virtual walk and snap a photo with the Walk4Mom shirts on. Be sure to share photos with us or on this page!
Shirts will be distributed over the next few weeks to those who have requested a shirt during the donation campaign.
Thank you again for your support!
We are happy to announce that we will be donating the $11,000+ raised during this campaign to the Terry Fox Foundation’s pancreatic pan-Canadian initiative, Enhanced Pancreatic Cancer Profiling for Individualized Care (EPPIC). All of the donated funds will be going to directly to research.
We chose this path for a few reasons:
1. EPPIC aims to develop individualized pancreatic cancer treatment strategies by recognizing the subtype of the cancer and exploring new treatment options for metastasized tumours (ie, the tumours that have spread to other organs from the pancreas, like Mom’s case);
2. We like the Terry Fox Foundation’s collaborative organizational approach to cancer research by comparing notes and sharing research findings among a variety of different cancer initiatives.
3. We like the active nature of the Terry Fox campaign since it nicely aligns with Moms love for walking and being physically active.
4. We are excited that the Terry Fox Foundation is going to be setting up a meeting between our family and a key pancreatic cancer researcher so that we can learn more about the disease and share Mom’s story as a reference; it’s important to share the devastating nature of this disease so that we can add a human perspective to the research.
Once more is known about the various subtypes of pancreatic cancer, our hope is that research would transition to more early detection strategies to give people a fighting chance before the cancer takes hold. New screening initiatives would allow people to catch pancreatic cancer before it spreads and becomes incurable; and even if it is incurable, we hope that new treatment options from EPPIC and similar initiatives will provide patients with more quality of life and more time to spend with loved ones. Those are two things we wish Mom would have had the chance to experience in her final weeks and days.
Once the donation has been made, I will share the amount sent and receipt for the donation so that you can see the direct impact each of your generous contributions has made to this cause.
Mom was so excited for this fundraising campaign, and I am confident that she would be happy to know that we are focused on trying to ensure that this disease does not cause devastation for individuals and families in the future.
