What a fabulous afternoon at the Murry Delta Juke Joint this afternoon! As always, our marvellous hosts David Lloyd and Greg Button made us all feel as if we were the Beatles at Shea stadium in the mid-60’s with their personal and professional hospitality with amazing sound and lighting. Their patrons are attentive to the music, generous in praise directly to the musos and we thank all for their generosity. Our guests today included brilliant young drummer Mack laying down the groove and the incomparable Lauren Henderson who was a whirling dervish of creativity with her family in attendance. See you soon..

Dusty Cox bought the Hammond Organ Quartet back to the juke joint today. Guest vocalist Lauren Henderson was staggeringly good. Dusty, Dave, Tyler, Jackson and Lauren….thank you for a fabulous afternoon!
We are thrilled to not only return to the groovy MDJJ, but with a BIG bonus, vocalist extraordinaire Lauren Henderson joining forces with us as well as young powerhouse drummer Jackson Mack. It's going to be an amazing afternoon full of musical thrills for both audience and band...
The Dusty Cox Hammond organ JAZZ 4tet Lauren Henderson The Venter/Neville/McEvoy/Cox Hammond Organ 4tet plays groovy, soulful jazz in the great tradition of Hammond organ groups ala’ Jimmy Smith and Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, George Benson and Ronnie Cuber, Lonnie Smith, Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes and Shirley Scott as well as original music and...
Join us tomorrow, Sunday, August 13, 5-8:00 at Mother Vine wine bar in the city. Free entry, great food and drink and some of the slinkiest musos around.. get your groove on with Dave McEvoy on Hammond organ, Tyler Venter on guitar, Steve Neville on drums and some dishevelled old American on saxophone...
Tyler and Alex sound sooooo good on this hip gospel ballad by Joss Stone.. Don't ya'll agree??
While we were missing two brilliant players, Dave McEvoy and Steve Neville, we got a couple of ‘ringers’ to sub including Mario Marino on drums and Shireen Khemlani on bass with the soulful Alex Lewinski on vocals and the boy wonder on guitar, Tyler Venter. We were having a ball being ridiculous at Barn1890 and somebody needs to tell that noisy old horn player to calm down… and lay off the (delicious) espresso martinis. Thanks to lovely Lee and all for a great day out!
This is going to be an amazing day Barn1890 3:30 start with groovy soul, funky blues and our ‘soul sista’ Alex Lewinski on vocals. Come dig the chilled vibe and enjoy the beautiful surrounds with us!!
We're playing under the banner of the Dusty Quintet this Sunday because we've got a few different players for the day.. Please join us at Barn1890 for a beautiful Sunday down south!
We'll be featuring the soulful vocals of Alex Lewinski and the deep groove of Marino and Khemlani with the boy wonder of guitar Tyler Venter and the old dude on saxophones..
Our rep will be soul, R&B and some groovy blues for the day to set the tone to 'ease up' for all..

We had a great time with the incredible Paul White filling in for our own incredible Dave McEvoy on the Hammond organ at Mother Vine wine bar yesterday. We thank Lachlan McGargill and Zac Treloar for having a honk on a quick blues with us as well as our new friend Shirley Schilder for bringing her lovely friends out to hear us (and we lifted these pictures from her as well..)!
We found one from the archives recorded at the fabulous Railway Hotel.. an original tune of Dusty's and the history of the title is the age-old challenge of two humans staying together.. without killing one another.. bahahaha... This is 'Now that You're Gone' featuring the 'boy wonder of the guitar' Tyler Venter, the 'bedrock' of the band Dave McEvoy on the Hammond organ and the dynamic, exciting Steve Neville on the drums..

We missed the amazing Steve Neville yesterday and he'll be 'back in the saddle' at our next gig. It was a great day and hang and hope to see you all soon!
Our final post from this gig at Mother Vine wine bar (where we play once a month) is Ann Ronnell's wonderful tune; 'Willow Weep for Me'. We're turning wonder boy Tyler Venter loose on the guitar and what a pleasure to have Mario, Freddy and Maisie B. sitting in on the day. The musical giant that is Dave McEvoy keeps this ship upright.. We're shifting some Mother Vine dates around and will announce our next appearance soon. Please join us at the amazing Murray Delta Juke Joint on Sunday, Oct. 30th, should be a 2:00 afternoon start. David Lloyd and Greg Button are generously bringing regular Sunday jazz gigs to the MDJJ and we all need to support that effort, it's a great day out, a beautiful drive from the city and the hippest club this side of the Rio Grande (says this old former South Texan).. See y'all then!
As Dave McEvoy has dubbed him, the 'National Treasure' that is Freddy Payne joined us with his one and only vocal style and we keep it as loose as possible or probable.. we love Freddy and are deeply grateful he allows us the privilege of bringing him up whenever possible! Freddy's style on the standard 'Pennies from Heaven' is incomparable.. the joy he brings through the music and life should be a blueprint for all of us, this man has figured it all out!
We were pleased to have a wonderful young singer/songwriter (who happens to be an outstanding current uni sax student as well) join us for a few tunes on the night. We feature the incredible Maisie B. on the beautiful ballad 'The Nearness of You'. You can catch Maisie here - https://www.facebook.com/maisieb973 - there, and everywhere..
This is Sergio Mendes's 'Groovy Samba'; we know it from Cannonball Adderley's wonderful Bossa Nova record released in 1963. This records stands the test of time with all that have enjoyed it as we all do too.
We'll upload a few more tunes from our last gig with our amazing guests, all thanks to our good friend Gordon getting video and audio of the band, thanks Gordon! This is our take on Cole Porter's 'Love for Sale', which had highly controversial lyrical content when it was released in 1930. My how we've 'evolved' socially.. Or have we?? No controversy here, it's all instrumental and nary a spoken word.. we hope you dig what we do..
We've got some things coming up and we'll let y'all know soon. In the meantime, this is from our last gig with the groovy Mario Marino as a guest on drums. This is the great Benny Golson's 'Killer Joe', which all know and love as we do!
As we nervously await our next gig (Oct. 24 @ Mother Vine wine bar, 3-6:00), out thoughts go out to all of our musical brothers and sisters not only locally, but nationally and internationally, for our industry has been nearly vaporised world-wide by covid and the restrictions it brings. Musicians are (to me..) a rather optimistic tribe; most of us think the next gig around the corner will bring musical and personal nirvana and we just want one more experience connecting with our friends on the bandstand. The Venter/Neville/McEvoy/Cox Hammond organ 4tet ain't no different.. we just want to play!
This is a riff blues from our last gig at Mother Vine, warts and all.. we dodge wait and bar staff that are simply trying to do their jobs while enduring our invasion of their space, with the noise and chaos it brings, we deal with the sound of every room we play, which is always different of course and so much more. Hope to see you on the 24th and we'll play the blues for you, but always with joy.. fingers crossed we get to make some noise one more time!
We're sorry to announce that our Mother Vine gig on Sunday, October 3rd has been rescheduled for October 24th due to a private function now happening at Mother Vine on the 3rd. Apologies for any inconvenience, but since it's free entry, no tickets have been purchased (or needed..).
We hope to see you on the 24th!
In the meantime, dig the amazing Shirley Scott on Hammond organ with Harold Vick on tenor playing Vick's tune, 'Don't Look Back' with the amazing Art Taylor on drums!

Shirley Scott Trio (w Harold Vick on tenor) - Don't Look Back - 1976 (Live video) Shirley Scott - Hammond Organ - with Harold Vick on tenor - who, incidentally, also wrote this tune
We enjoy playing .. everything .. not just one thing, one style, but as much as we can experience. This is a Prince tune, 'Thieves in the Temple', an extended minor blues that appeared on the amazing Herbie Hancock 1996 recording 'The New Standard', which celebrates contemporary composition at that time in a jazz context, which can be anything!
'Now That You're Gone' is an original written by Dusty, about the age old angst of you-know-what.. it's meant to portray light & shade in one's life and how we all long for connection and expression.
