The famous stately home rally stage of Weston Park, which featured in the Lombard RAC Rally over many decades, was ringing to the sound of rally car engines again at the weekend, thanks to the Historic Rally Festival.

Legendary British Champion co-driver and storyteller, Mike Broad joined former British and World Champs Howard Davies and Louise Aitken-Walker to commentate on the action at the event.

During the live TV coverage of the event, Paul Woodford mentioned Mike Broad’s stories, so we thought you might want to hear a few of them.

A word about the organisers of the Malcolm Wilson Rally…

Faced with unprecedented extreme weather conditions yesterday, with travel to - and around - Cumbria treacherous, let alone conditions on the stages themselves during the recce, most sensible people would have forgiven the rally organisers for calling the event off.

Conversely, what we actually saw was a display of guts, determination, creativity, and ultimately the passion that we all share for this sport.

Kevin Savage and his team put in some hard yards; rearranging everything they’d been working for months to put in place.

Don’t underestimate this task - cancelling stages, doubling up on usage in others, changing the road route, the schedule, timings, running order, amending the regulations and ensuring the logistics for the competitors, officials, spectators and stakeholders of the event were all put in place.

Despite many rumours throughout the day, and no doubt ongoing pressure from various angles to publicise updates, the organisers communicated clearly and decisively once they’d put in place their new plan.

We went rallying today, thanks to some truly unsung heroes of the sport. What a triumph!
