If built, Plano Skies Energy Center will generate up to 250 MW of clean, reliable energy. That’s the equivalent of 20,000-60,000 average Illinois homes. By adding solar and other renewable energy sources to the energy mix, we are building a diverse electrical system and a stronger grid, all while lowering costs for consumers.

Let it Snow: How Solar Panels Can Thrive in Winter Weather 23/12/2022

It’s a common misconception that solar panels don’t produce energy during the winter months due to snowfall. Solar panels are tilted at an angle, so snow is able to slide off on its own. Additionally, dark solar panels are designed to attract and trap heat, helping to melt the snow from the panel.

Having snow on the ground can actually increase the productivity of solar panels thanks to the Albedo Effect, where part of the sun’s light hits the earth's surface and is reflected back into the atmosphere. More and more panels are able to capture this reflected sunlight on the back of the panels and use it to produce electricity.

Let it Snow: How Solar Panels Can Thrive in Winter Weather Winter is here and many parts of the country have already seen snow. Although at first blush it may seem that solar power is ideal for the summer, solar panels actually produce useful power throughout all four seasons — including when they're covered...

Solar projects are silent energy (and revenue) generators. Other than the inverters and tracking monitors that produce a low hum, the facilities are quiet. The hum can’t be heard outside of the fence line, which makes solar a very quiet neighbor!

Why Solar Power Is Good for Birds 07/12/2022

Did you know that solar energy facilities can actually be beneficial to local bird populations? Solar facilities allow birds and other local wildlife to flourish right where they are. Read more about how solar can benefit birds here:

Solar panels make good neighbors. Since solar panel components are enclosed in a solid matrix, there are no emissions or pollution to the air, water, or ground – this means they are safe for the environment. The trace amounts of materials found in solar panels are also recyclable and would instead be wasted byproducts of mining if not used safely and effectively in panels. Because the casing of solar panels is made of glass and aluminum, solar panels do not burn if they are involved in a fire. And, they are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and support the energy grid throughout the project's 30+ year lifespan. Additionally, ground-mounted solar arrays are permitted to protect public water supplies, wetlands, and other water resource areas.

Clean Jobs Midwest 03/11/2022

Did you know that jobs in clean energy are a huge source of employment in the Prairie State? More than 120,000 folks from Illinois were employed in the industry at the end of 2021, more than the number of lawyers, accountants, web developers, and real estate agents in the state combined. Furthermore, the number of solar energy jobs grew by 10.2% in 2021. Plano Skies Energy Center is proud to be a part of the renewable energy industry and plans to employ up to 300 people during construction, plus a handful more during operations. Read more about clean energy jobs in Illinois here:

A 100% solar community in Florida suffered no power losses from Hurricane Ian 01/11/2022

Solar technology has improved greatly over the past few decades, making it almost impervious to severe weather events like hurricanes and tornadoes. In this article, read how the solar-powered community of Babcock Ranch in Florida was able to withstand the heavy rain and wind of last month’s Hurricane Ian, without losing power:

A 100% solar community in Florida suffered no power losses from Hurricane Ian Just 12 miles from Fort Meyers, Babcock Ranch was built with climate resiliency in mind.

In addition to being safe and compatible with agricultural and rural residential uses, solar energy facilities exist in harmony with wildlife and the environment. Solar panels produce no emissions, waste, odor, or by-products and are non-toxic energy facilities. Plano Skies Energy Center will contribute to our nation’s energy needs while being a good neighbor.

Snow, rain, or shine, solar panels are still generating electricity! Solar technology has improved a lot over the last decade to make solar a reliable source almost anywhere. While a panel’s output will be highest on clear, sunny days, solar radiation hits the panels even when there are clouds in the sky. Modern panels feature bifacial technology, which allows them to absorb radiation on both the front and rear sides of the panels to produce energy––this is especially beneficial in snowy winters since the sunshine radiation that is reflected from the ground is particularly strong in snowy weather.

Utility-scale solar projects like Plano Skies Energy Center do more than just provide direct positive impacts to their host communities. They also create indirect positive impacts to local businesses such as restaurants, hotels, gas stations, entertainment venues, equipment rental, and other goods and services providers. It’s a win-win!

Timeline photos 20/09/2022

One of the advantages of locating a solar project on land that’s already cleared for farming is that there are typically relatively few adjustments that need to be made to the site itself. Farmland is relatively flat with few to no trees to remove in order to accommodate the equipment.

This also makes it easier to restore the site to its original condition when a project is decommissioned. Farmers are constantly turning pastures, grass areas, and even woods into farm ground. Returning land that hosted solar panels to farming use would be similar.

INFOGRAPHIC: Understanding the Grid 15/08/2022

While a utility or large energy user may sign a contract to virtually receive the energy produced by a renewable energy project, the physical energy gets delivered to the closest location on the electrical grid demanding energy. The energy could be used locally, statewide, or in neighboring states. Some of the power generated by this project will flow into homes and businesses in the area. It’s common for local utility companies to purchase renewable energy from projects within their service territory.

Adding solar and other renewable energy sources to the grid will ultimately result in lower wholesale energy prices, which helps keep rates low for consumers. Additionally, solar energy offers power at peak hours when electricity prices are the most expensive. Therefore, solar energy often reduces peak hour pricing while offering a hedge against rising fuel costs such as coal and natural gas. To learn more about how the grid works, see here:

Did you know Plano Skies Energy Center will contribute to the local and statewide tax bases throughout the life of the project. Like any commercial business, Plano Skies Energy Center will pay property taxes. This is money that can provide more funding for schools, roads, first responders, and other key programs that serve the public. Having Plano Skies Energy Center in the community will not change the taxing structure, it will only bring more tax revenue to the area.

Utility-scale solar projects like Plano Skies Energy Center are a no-brainer when compared to other forms of development. Unlike other forms of development, solar facilities are a temporary form of land use, and the land is restored once the project is decommissioned.

Compared to other development opportunities like housing, solar projects directly benefit communities through landowner payments, job creation, and stable revenue to local taxing bodies. And, they generate indirect positive economic impacts for local businesses and supply chains by bringing new business to restaurants, gas stations, hotels, stores, and more.

We've been hearing a lot of questions about whether Plano Skies Energy Center will receive subsidies from the federal government, and we wanted to set the record straight.

Plano Skies Energy Center will be fully funded by private investors. This makes solar projects a wonderful opportunity for rural communities and U.S. infrastructure since the investments to improve our energy grid come from private companies.

When it comes to tax incentives, all forms of energy are currently subsidized in the U.S. That being said, solar energy is one of the lowest-cost new energy sources on the market, even without subsidies. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Q3Bxri
