1. Hand sanitizer, pool chemicals, bleach, and cleaning supplies are notorious for causing sterling silver to discolor.
2. Make-up present on the skin or clothing is the most common cause of blackening. Cosmetics often contain chemical compounds which are harder than the jewelry itself. These compounds can rub off very tiny particles of metal which appear as jet black dust.
3. Keep your pieces dry – out of the bathroom, spa, or gym.
4. Soaps, detergents, and other cleaning agents can build up under a ring, causing a type of dermatitis. You should remove all rings before using soap or detergent, and clean the rings frequently.
5. Medications in the wearer's system, especially certain antibiotics, can also cause jewelry to blacken or discolor.
6. In some rare cases, the wearer's basic body chemistry reacts to the alloys in both gold and silver and causes tarnishing.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELRY

There are a variety of at-home methods for cleaning your silver jewelry when it begins to tarnish.

Soap and water: This is our most recommended method because of the gentleness of soap and water. This should really be your first line of defense before trying anything else.

Baking soda and water: Make a paste from baking soda and water, apply a small amount onto a cloth or toothbrush and scrub gently.

White vinegar and baking soda: This gentle cleaning method is great for removing heavy tarnish. Soak your sterling silver in ½ cup of white vinegar and 2 tbsp of baking soda (combine these in the sink and prepare yourself for the fizzing and foam) for two to three hours. Rinse jewelry and pat dry.

Finish with a polish: After you’ve given your jewelry a good cleaning, you can finish the process by using a polishing cloth that’s specifically for sterling silver.
