~Loetz was one of the leading Bohemian art glass makers, working in the Art Nouveau era. The Loetz Art Glass company was founded by Johann Loetz in 1840 and became renowned for its bold colours, ground-breaking techniques and organic forms. Loetz art glass was at its peak between around 1890-1920, with its products being manufactured at the Johann Loetz Witwe glassworks in what is today the Czech Republic.

Shall we talk about jet a bit? Okay, lets do. Jet which is the lowest form of coal known as lignite is actually considered to be a gemstone. However, unlike other gems it is not a mineral but a mineraloid that is at first derived from wood that has been compressed under extreme pressure. Because jet was the creation of wood under intense pressure it has been found in many locations over the world, especially where deciduous forestation has been long abundant. There are two types of jet, hard and soft. The hard form of course is the one that makes itself most ready as jewelry since it can be faceted with precision where sot jet cannot.
During the 19th century, and especially during the time when mourning was followed so assiduously, jet was the one material that could be worn without approbation regardless of the mourning process.
This is a slim thread and jet bead pelerine from about 1890 that exists in the keeping of the MET in New York. While this accessory was entirely correct for the mourning state it was also fine for other times as well. A lady could wear this of an afternoon while accepting visitors or as part of a costume meant for visiting others.
When we think about black and the 19th century it isn’t always about mourning, it’s often about STYLE.

This beauty is a D&C France piece. R. Delinieres & Co. In Limoges, France was established in 1863 by Remy Delinieres. The mark on this plate dates to 1894 to 1900. It is also signed by the artist. S.E.J A-19. I have not been able to find any info on this signature. It could have been painted in France or the US. I also have not been able to find a similar design in my continued search. I knew she was special the moment I saw her. She has been in my collection for about three years.
