Announcing "Special Report" (available March 3): https://telefis.bandcamp.com/album/special-report
Throughout 2021/2022 we released a series of EPs as companion pieces to the two albums 'a hAon' and 'a Dó'. These featured remixes and alternate versions, mostly by Jacknife Lee himself, but also by specially chosen guests who would compliment and expand the Telefís retro-futurist sensibility. The duo engaged the services of pioneers such as Thomas Leer & Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode/Mute Records) and also dance floor mavericks like Basement Jaxx, Howie B & Andy Meecham (The Emperor Machine, Chicken Lips, Bizarre Inc. & others).
Special Report" is a 22-track CD and Digital set that collects all of the Telefís remixes and alternate versions under one roving antenna. Features new versions of "Seo É Glór Na Teilifíse" and "Feed The Light" plus two previously unreleased remixes -- "The Age Of Cling featuring Will Sergeant" (Cling Clang Version by Jacknife Lee) and "Strawboy Supernova" (Madrid Metal by Howie B).
Pre-order the Digital album and get the new Jacknife Lee remix delivered directly to your in-box.
A 2-CD set will also be available on March 3 via traditional retail channels.
Thanks for your continued support!

Mike Smalle, Cathal Coughlan & Jah Wobble - 'Old Oak Road' Bring Your Own Hammer is a new project in which historians and composers collaborate to create new and original song cycles based on historical sources.
Today we thought you might be interested in reading Stan Erraught's brief but very thoughtful essay that went out with the Telefís press release. Stan was part of the Irish post-punk scene and a member of the groups Peridots and Stars Of Heaven amongst others and he knew Cathal Coughlan quite well. He is now a professor at the Music School at Leeds University.
Telefís “a Dó”
by Stan Erraught
-----------------
‘Casiotone Angelus’ on this record, samples the voice of Éamon DeValera, then president of the Republic of Ireland, launching the first Irish television station, RTÉ (Raidio Telefís Eireann), on new year’s day 1961. Dev (as he was universally known) reminds his audience that ‘we are an old nation…with our own distinctive characteristics’. The entirety of his address is worth hearing: Dev clearly has doubts about the wisdom of introducing the seductive power of the cathode tube into the homely hearths of his frugal nation, but trusts that the good taste of the people will push the new service towards ‘the good the true and the beautiful’ and away from ‘squalid domestic dramas’ and for music ‘of the great composers’ and not ‘anything lower’. Nevertheless, his trepidation is obvious, and as he calls down the blessings of God on his people, at the end, in Irish, it’s obvious that he thinks we will need them.
I first met Cathal Coughlan after Micro Disney supported the Fall at the Arcadia in Cork city in October 1980. The ‘Arc’ was then run by the students’ union at University College Cork, and pursued an adventurous booking policy that meant that they were able to attract many bands to Cork that bypassed Dublin. This was the case with the Fall, who had yet to play the capital, and a modest trainload of us made our way down to see them.
The Arcadia, however, had a history that preceded its incarnation as the seedbed of Cork post-punk: it was perhaps the most prestigious, and busiest, venue of the showband scene that dominated the Irish music industry from the mid-1950s until he mid-1970s. In many ways, while there were ballrooms in Dublin, Cork and Belfast between them dominated the showband scene. Certainly, promoters from those two cities – Jim Aiken from Belfast, Oliver Barry from Cork – were the best known, and both built careers that continued into the 1990s and beyond as the Irish music scene became more aligned with international rock and pop.
In the seventies though, when Cathal and I would have been in our teens, we would have, to adapt another song on this record ‘seen showbands’ – and little else. Before punk, rock was the poor relation in a tripartite split in Irish popular music squeezed between various versions of folk music, some poppy, some more sternly traditional, and the showband scene, itself split into pop and country factions. Few enough bands from Britain or the US toured Ireland until punk and post-punk acts established a bridgehead, scared off by the Troubles in the north: nevertheless, with access to the British music press, BBC radio, and, on the east coast at any rate, British TV, the sense of life being elsewhere, but also frustratingly close, was hard to forestall.
Whereas, living in Britain as we both now do, nostalgia, both generally and within white rock and indie music, can seem all-consuming, in Ireland, the cultural minutiae of the recent past are much less likely to be fetishized. There are good reasons for this: British people – white ones anyway - can feel with justice that life may have been better at some unspecified point in the past, but the Irish have no such recourse. Outside of the dwindling cohort of adherents to a once dominant Catholic church in the Republic, or those north of the border who wish for a return of the orange state, very few would want to live ‘back then’.
More practically, with regard to music, whereas the opening bars of ‘Waterloo Sunset’ can transport half of England back to an imagined field of glory, the fact that the Irish music industry almost completely ignored recording during the 1960s makes the musical past that would have constituted the social life of much of the country then curiously hard to reconstruct.
So, whereas Mark Fisher’s notion of the ‘hauntological’ that has informed much writing and music making in Britain over recent years is predicated on the notion of a present haunted by the future that we were promised but never got, this record does something a little different: reminds we Irish of the grain of the past we had, and whose echoes are fainter than perhaps they should be, if only to alert us to the contingency of our present. Thus, for example, ‘Circling over Shannon’, recalling the time in 1994 when Boris Yeltsin was ‘indisposed’ and left then Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds, waiting on the tarmac at Shannon Airport, reminds us also that Albert was a man who made his fortune running dancehalls in his native midlands – and often unkindly seen as ‘the Country and Western Taoiseach’ in Dublin. Given the economic underdevelopment of the Ireland that Reynolds grew up in, the music business was probably, by the mid- sixties, one of the largest areas of employment outside the public service in the country, and yet, whereas British social history can’t leave the Beatles / Bowie / Punk / Rave alone, Irish academic social history will stubbornly cleave to literature and drama, rather than popular culture to explicate the mysteries of the recent past. Telefís, by mining through this stuff, are doing something valuable here, and something that, once done, you wonder why it has taken so long.
