Smart Growth: Georgetown – Growth is Coming…Let's Be Smart About It 10/12/2022

I’ve always appreciated the insight and engagement Larry Olson offered either in person at city council meetings or his blogs — especially when I ran for city council. The City of Georgetown is going to be making some big decisions, and I wanted to share for anyone interested. Speaking of city council — we’ll be (re)electing our district 2 council representative spring 2023.

This is from Larry:

Over the next 15-18 months, a lot of decisions are going to be made that will have a major effect on the future of our historic Square and Old Town. I think these decisions will be so impactful, I finally decided to restart my blog, smart growth: georgetown.

There are 2 long-range projects that will be started in the coming weeks.

Downtown Master Plan Update. City Council has recently hired a consultant to update the Downtown Master Plan. It’s been almost 10 years since the Plan has been looked at and as we all know, the City has gone through a significant amount of change & growth.

There have been discussions about possibility increasing the building height limits in Downtown and possible ways to increase walkability around our Square. This Update will set our Downtown’s future course.

Austin Avenue Corridor Study. CAMPO, in partnership with the City Council, will be studying the 5-mile stretch of Austin Avenue from the Northeast Inner Loop (I-35 & Airport Rd) to the Southeast Inner Loop (Leander Rd). This effort will potentially transform Austin Avenue and the surrounding areas, like the Square, Downtown and Old Town.

There will be significant opportunities for the you to get involved in both these projects and I really hope you will be able to find to time to participate…remember, it’s our future!

I hope you have the time to read my new post, “City Council will set Downtown’s Future over the next 18 Months!” The post will begin a special 9 to 12-part series on my blog, called “Downtown Georgetown: An Urban Village.”

You can find today’s new post on my blog at https://smartgrowthgeorgetown.org

I hope you enjoy reading this new post. As always, your feedback and comments are important, and I encourage you to share them with me. I also encourage you to forward this email to friends and neighbors you think might find them interesting.

Take Care & Get Involved!
Larry

What do YOU mean think makes Georgetown special? The City of Georgetown wants to know:

***

Georgetown seeks resident input for branding research process

Georgetown has partnered with North Star Place Branding + Marketing to develop a community brand for marketing the area to visitors, residents, and businesses in the year 2021 and beyond.

“We want to hear from everyone in Georgetown about what makes our community special, so we can celebrate what we love about our community and share that with others,” City Manager David Morgan said. “Having a complete brand is a critical step toward positioning the City as a trusted, valued, recognized voice in our community and moving forward on the work we started with our 2019 communications audit.”

Toward this end, North Star developed a customized, communitywide, online survey. The questionnaire has been carefully crafted to determine Georgetown’s strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and opportunities. All who live and/or work in Georgetown are invited and encouraged to participate in this important community-wide initiative.

“We have partnered with more than 250 communities across North America, and I can’t emphasize enough the importance of insights gleaned from community members,” North Star CEO Will Ketchum said. “The heart of Georgetown’s brand will be what makes the community special, so it can stand out in the marketplace. And one of the best places to find that figurative nugget of marketing gold is in the hearts and minds of the people who call Georgetown home.”

The survey can be found at www.gtxbrand.com. Surveys can be completed online and submitted electronically. Printed surveys are available at City Hall, 808 Martin Luther King, Jr. St.; Georgetown Municipal Complex, 300-1 Industrial Ave.; Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave.; and Visitors Center, 103 W. Seventh St.

Surveys must be completed and submitted before April 8.

City of Georgetown, Texas Branding The City of Georgetown has recently begun a research-driven, community-wide branding initiative. This effort will help Georgetown stand out in the marketplace as we grow toward our preferred future. We are currently conducting research inside and outside the community to uncover perceptions, attitud...

Originally, the City of Georgetown intended to have completed pick up of tree debris that resulted from the winter ice storm; by Friday, March 12; however, please read the statement below for updated information:

***
The Work Plan for Storm Limb Removal

Most of you are aware that the Public Works Department experienced an overwhelming response to the City’s winter storm tree limb and debris curbside pick-up service and recognizes that it did not reach all neighborhoods by end of last week 3/12. We received comments/concerns that some streets and addresses did not receive curbside pick-up service last week or since the beginning of the service on Wednesday, February 24th. For these reasons, Public Works worked today to retained one of our landscape contractors and has some of its crews continuing rounds this week to ensure every address, street, and neighborhood is serviced by end of the week. This is a quality control round of sorts, intended to double-check every neighborhood and street, so we are careful to not advertise this as a week of additional service, but rather that we are using this week to catch up on all the areas that were missed.

Residents are encouraged to contact Customer Care at 512-930-3640 or [email protected]. For residents who call Customer Care, our staff are logging customers’ addresses and will provide them to Public Works so that their debris will be picked-up this week.

Also, we are waiving fees for brushy material drop-off at the Transfer Station through March 20th.Georgetown solid waste customers who still have tree limb debris can drop off up to 3 cubic yards per trip, per customer at the Transfer Station, 250 W.L. Walden Drive. Residents will need to bring a recent utility bill and matching ID to have the fees waived. Only customers who live inside Georgetown City limits have their drop-off fees waived.

Update Regarding Mask Mandate in Georgetown. Per the City of Georgetown:

Georgetown updates COVID-19 safety guidelines, reopens most facilities

Face coverings are still required in City facilities

Most City of Georgetown facilities and lobbies have reopened to the public March 10 without capacity limits, in accordance with Gov. Greg Abbott’s Executive Order (GA-34) announced March 2.
While most facilities will reopen to the public, the Library will continue to offer curbside pickup hours five mornings a week and began grab-and-go hours in the afternoons and on Saturdays. Find more information on the Library’s website.

According to City Council direction at its March 9 meeting, members of the public will be required to wear a face mask in City facilities. Face masks will be provided for visitors who do not have one available.

The City will continue to use a number of safety protocols that have been put in place over the past year for the safety of employees and the public. Those protocols include physical distancing requirements, health screenings for employees, and plexiglass at all reception areas.

All City employees are required to wear a face mask when:
• Inside City facilities and physical distancing of greater than six feet is not possible
• Inside, interacting face-to-face with customers/residents
• Outdoors, interacting face-to-face with fellow employee/customer/resident and physical distancing is not possible
• Interacting face-to-face with fellow employee at employee’s workstation
• Walking through City facilities
City board and commission meetings will continue to be virtual, and City Council meetings will continue as hybrid in-person/virtual meetings.

According to Abbott’s order, private businesses will no longer be required to have a safety plan or require face masks; however, safety measures are left up to individual businesses. If you are asked to wear a mask to enter a business, please respect that business owner's wishes and choose kindness.

If a customer refuses to wear a face mask, the business can ask that person to leave. If the customer refuses, the business may escalate the issue to a criminal trespassing violation. The business can call the police department’s non-emergency number at 512-930-3510 and officers will respond.

Today we would love to celebrate some of those people but we need your help.

In the comments below if you know of someone that went out of their way to help you or someone else during the storm will you drop their name and a quick comment about what they did. Our team is going to pick a handful of our neighbors and celebrate them with “Free Tea for a Month”.
