Kitchen Sink 2024 Open Callout

Kitchen Sink Fest is back with a vengeance in 2024 and in a brand new home: QTOPIA Sydney!! Submissions are now open for our week long festival from 17 - 21 December.

HUH?
Sydney’s newest and weirdest theatre festival is now in its third year. For 5 nights, across two different venues, QTOPIA will play host to two programmes of double bills full of fresh artistic invention. That means we’re looking for four acts. Each act will have the opportunity to perform 5 times.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Anything, literally anything. Last year there was interactive poetry, drag-king comedy, superhero housemate tension, and Dazza - the barfly that haunts your local pub. Each show must be around 40 minutes and feature minimal set (you’ll be bumping in-and-out every night).

WHAT YOU’LL GET
We are offering the slot and our services as producers. You won’t be out of pocket for venue hire, rehearsal space will be made available, and all profit from the festival will be split between each of the shows and the production team.

INTERESTED?
Then send us an email at [email protected]. Your EOI can be as simple as a couple sentences at the ‘I have an idea in my head phase’ or a full script with cast, creative team, and 17 funding bodies attached. A one page pitch? One third of a script? A voice message? A video? A meme collage? No worries! No matter how wild, we welcome all applications in any format. Submissions must close 11:59pm Friday 19th July.

We strongly encourage theatre practitioners of any race, ethnicity, ability, sexuality, identity or size to apply. If you are a creator, producer, or team of artists who are First Nations, Indigenous, Black/blak, People of Colour, LGBTQIA+, d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Blind or Low Vision, and/or Disabled and/or Chronically Ill, Neurodiverse and/or a part of a community not listed here who has been historically excluded from theatre spaces – we would love to see your work!!

💥 Shout out to our talented friends at Kitchen Sink Fest who return for a second year of experimental performing arts at Marrickville's Flight Path Theatre until 4th November 💥

We are so, so excited for this fest that platforms young, q***r creatives making genre-defying work that reflects Sydney’s true diversity.

This year there is superhero housemate friction, the dudes stuck in the Trojan Horse, an interactive poetry show and Dazza, the bar fly that haunts the smokers' area of your local pub, and a performance by Rachel Seeto and directed by Dominique Purdue from Dumb Kids.

Check out the whole festival and get your tickets at www.flightpaththeatre.org

ORIGIN STORY | Robin and Sam are best friends from different worlds – she's a superhero, he's a schoolteacher. When they move in together, it's all fun and games until it's really not. Robin soon embarks on a journey against time to figure out what went wrong, and save their friendship, to change the story. Everyone is obsessed with the way things begin, the ORIGIN STORY of it all, but what if this is the story of how things end?

Eric Jiang's first full length theatre show 'Rhomboid' at earlier this year brought in rave reviews.
“A pureness in thought and purpose that really shines, for a work memorable for both its style and meaning… joyful” - Suzy Wrong

We can’t wait for you to see his next work, Origin Story.

DATE AND TIME | We can’t wait for you to experience this immersive and intimate experience created by Albert Lin. Albert has written a poem every day since the 15th of February 2017. He’s kept a diary for almost as long. Come join a conversation about what dates mean to us, and see how the same day has as many faces as there are people.
Share a day that’s special to you. Listen to others’. There is a poem for every occasion, and a date."

HORSE PLAY | From the minds of these incredible artists from Western Sydney… we present Horse Play!

Horse Play is a devised drag comedy exploring masculinity, comradeship, and... whatever else comes up when you're a dude squashed inside a wooden horse full of dudes.

We all know the mythology; a Greek army snuck into Troy inside the “peace offering” (lol) of a wooden horse, waited a bit, and then BAM — jumped out, did some stabby stabby, and won the war.

BUT do we know the answers to the most important questions?

How did they pass the time?
Wasn’t it at least a little bit (a lot) gay in there?
Was Helen REALLY that hot?

These questions will (maybe) be answered through some drag, a female/enby lens, and a bit of silliness.

DAZZA | In this close and intimate conversation with Dazza, the bar fly that haunts the smokers' area of your local pub, Frankie Fearce pulls apart toxic masculinity in a way only a regional q***r that had to pretend they liked VB until they were 24 can.

Frankie earned two nominations for Best Emerging Artist and Best Comedy Show, and took the award for Best Premiere Show of Newcastle Fringe 2023 with ‘Are you a Boy or a Girl’. We can’t wait for you to experience her excellence!
