I wasn’t sure if I should post this photo. If you zoom in closely you can see the falsies coming off my eye 😅 My makeup skills have been a little rusty lol

But good thing the cards are cute and I had professionals like 💇🏻‍♀️ and 📸 to save the day.

Cards:
OMGhee it’s your birthday 🧈
Happy Pho-King birthday 🍲
You’re my home slice 🍞

How many of you are celebrating your second COVID birthday? 😅

Here in Alberta, the announcement of further restrictions was real rough. It’s exhausting but I’m hoping we can come out the other side with lower numbers and thousands more people vaccinated.

So let’s be kind to one another, cut each other some slack and remember to check in with your loved ones. And since we can’t have birthday parties or go for dim sum, send this card to someone celebrating their second COVID birthday 🙃

The month of May is Asian Heritage month (in Canada), also called AAPI heritage month! As someone who identifies as being part of the community, I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t know that Asian heritage month started in the 90s. And it’s only through recent attacks and events that I’ve become more aware. I’m far from an expert in this space but I’m hoping to at least start/continue the conversation.

Within the East-Asian community, it’s common to be reserved and to not speak up. We’re taught to keep our heads down and power through, not to draw attention to ourselves, especially as women. This is something I continue to work through and why I haven’t said much on the topic and probably why you haven’t heard your other Asian friends speak on it either. It’s also taken me time to process all the news and seeing what’s happening to those who look like me, my parents, my grandma.

Although it’s been tough, there have also been many positive stories about solidarity and communities coming together in the wake of so many tragedies so I try to focus on these while also understanding we still have a long way to go.

So here’s to hoping we can educate ourselves, show more kindness and compassion, and stand up for one another 💜

“Joy is the holy fire that keeps our purpose warm and our intelligence aglow.” - Helen Keller

For those that don’t know, I have a 9-5 and Silk Road is something I do in my spare time. So I had a lot of people ask me why I started this business. And my answer is always, cause it’s fun! And it has given me a creative outlet that I’ve never had before. This past year has taught me to focus on things that not only bring me joy but also spread joy. And that will always be a core value of ours. We’re here to spread joy through design, so whether it’s a card, wedding sign or quote that we post, we hope it brings a moment of joy to your day.

This is something I have to constantly remind myself! Especially when scrolling through social media and as a new business owner. So here’s your Monday motivation to be kind to yourself, don’t rush to “keep up” cause things will unfold as they’re supposed to.

At least that’s what I tell myself 🤷🏻‍♀️

One of our other guiding principles is giving back to our community. We believe there is more than enough to go around and we wouldn’t be where we are without the support of our community. So for every purchase, 10% is donated to charitable causes, such as replanting trees or providing meals to those in need. You can feel good about the purchase you make!

If you have any other suggestions on how to give back, let us know!

Those were the good old days weren’t they?

Before the pandemic, I was living like I still had that energy level 😅 and was on the verge of burnout. But with lockdown, I was forced to slow down. Although it was hard, it was exactly what I needed. To hit reset, learn to sit in stillness (still a work in progress) and get in tune with what makes me happy. And it gave me the opportunity to start this side business, something I’ve always wanted to do. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m ready to get back to the swing of things but I know for me it’s going to look different than pre-COVID.

What have you learned during your time in lockdown?

Since I can’t make chapatis, I just turn them in to birthday cards 😅

As much as I love receiving cards, I really love giving out cards and seeing people’s reactions! That’s why I started making cards. It’s an easy way to spread joy, show someone you care and to celebrate life’s moments. And especially over the past year, sending cards is one small thing that we can all do to remind those around us that we care.

And what better way than with a food pun? If you know me, I don’t do mushy or emotional 😆 So a good food pun with a slight sentimental feel is my jam.

Have any good food puns? Let me know!

Each card is designed, handcrafted and packaged by me! Card is A2 size (4.25”x5.5”) and comes with a cream coloured envelope. Card is blank inside and printed on premium 100-lb cardstock.

When I started making cards, I was super overwhelmed with all of the options - paper types, wrapping, shipping materials etc. At the time, it made sense to buy cheaper materials through Amazon just so I could get my business up and running. But I realized why these materials were so cheap - plastic wrapping, not using recycled materials and not produced with the environment in mind.

So after much research, I’ve made a commitment to be as sustainable as possible. Our greeting cards are printed on eco-friendly paper, our envelopes are made of 100% PCW (post consumer waste), glassine wrapping (a recyclable and compostable product), shipping materials are made of PCW and everything is recyclable. And as a plus, we source all these materials from a Canadian supplier. Although we still have a long way to go, we can all start somewhere!

Have other suggestions? Let me know in the comments.

And we’re back! Hey Friends, we took some time off to give our brand a bit of refresh and to get our Etsy shop up to date. So excited to be back with some fun stuff.

If we haven’t met, I’m Christina and this is Silk Road Design Studio. We are a local Edmonton business that believes in spreading joy through design. We create greeting cards, art prints and event signs that celebrate all of life's special moments. All of our pieces are a direct reflection of our personality; funny but sentimental, simple but impactful and bridge together East and West.

We also believe we have a responsibility to protect our planet and to give back. A portion of every sale is donated to humanitarian causes that are near and dear to our hearts. We also carefully choose every material that is used for production - from the paper we print on to all of our packaging, we make sure we conduct our business in a sustainable way.

Big or small, we hope each piece brings a smile to your face!
