Cathy Durham Bair: Updates

This page is for updates regarding Cathy Bair & her journey of healing!

Update from Keith:

Good morning friends and family! My mom’s procedure went smoothly today with no surprises or complications. Surgeons placed the neural stimulator in her lower spine and it runs up to the mid spine level. The next few days require minimal motion to help the tissues calm down and heal quickly. PT staff will come in tomorrow to begin the early stages of recovery and therapy. The remainder of today and all day Sunday will be rest, and the mapping starts bright and early Monday morning. If any new details arise today I’ll pass them along!

From Keith:

So my mom and I arrived in Guadalajara yesterday and stayed one night in the hotel before checking into the hospital. Today after admitting, she went for some imaging (Xray, mri, and bone density) and some other tests (ekg, labs, etc) in preparation for tomorrow morning’s surgery. She’s getting an epidural neural stimulator implanted in her spine to assist the stem cell treatments. Getting some rest tonight. During my stay she will be moving around very little, especially at first. After that, several friends & family will stay with her (you know who you are 😉) as someone needs to be here for the duration.

After touring the hospital, the clinic she’ll move to after a week, rehab & PT, and other local amenities, I have to say I’m very impressed with this facility. It’s brand new and a little Bougie. We were told it’s part of a “mall”, but definitely not a mall in the American sense of the word. There is a large common area/foyer, a cafe, a small snack shop, and a 24-hour pharmacy.

Please forward this to anyone not on my friends list that may be wanting to know. I will refrain from sending multiple repetitive texts individually 😉

✨Next Big Chapter on Cathy’s Healing Process✨

Ron and I have been following Gods lead on some available forms of healing for my current condition.
One available procedure are stem cell treatments. Thankfully, much research and treatment around the miracle of stem cells have been taking place for conditions and injuries, including spinal cord injury. Also a blessing is an internationally known stem cell company is located in Houston. We completed the harvesting procedure of stem cells this week; a big step forward.

After about eight weeks of multiplying the cells by a culturing process, I will be ready to receive three separate injections. The first is required to be done out of the USA at a clinic in Cancun because this injection is done into the thecal sac directly in the spinal column. This will take place over a five day period. Then the other two injections will be done in Houston stretched out over several months.
Eight to twelve weeks after the last injection I will be ready to receive an implant called an epidural stimulator. This must also be done outside the USA and the time commitment is 35 days, not including travel. This stimulator is implanted at the T12 level in the spinal column. It receives brain impulses traveling down the spinal column and amplifies them before sending them down the spinal cord to the legs. It requires many hours a day of physical therapy and work to be successful.

Ron and I had a call with Dr. Nasir with Verita Nuero. He was extremely helpful. He had studied my MRI films of my current spinal column and spinal cord. He confirmed that the spinal cord is intact. This is incredibly great news! He fully supports our Houston stem cell plan before any placement of the epidural stimulator. He advised that they will also use stem cells as a part of their treatment.

So, Verita Nuero has locations in Bangkok, Thailand and Guadalajara, Mexico. Dr. Nasir believes that either location is of equal quality to perform the surgery, follow-up care and additional stem cell treatments. We will just have to make the decision on which location to use later on with God’s leading.
These procedures will take months to complete and are complex. Based on estimates given we believe the range of cost to be from $180,000- $200,000; not covered under any insurance available to us. Accordingly, we will need to be doing some fund raising and will do a follow-up communication when that process begins. In the meantime, we continue to covet and sincerely appreciate your prayers and loving support. We feel those and it does make a difference.

Love to all, Ron and Cathy.

First of all, Ron and I want to thank everyone for continued prayers and support ! We regret we have not posted an update before now. You may recall that I had two separated ribs and two torn tendons in my right shoulder due to some of my healthcare providers. Those ribs have started healing back and the doctor wants to leave them for now. The torn tendons are healing as I receive therapy. The two injuries have delayed my physical and occupational therapy since I was discharged October 27th., however I continue to make progress every day. When I finish with my shoulder therapy I will concentrate on upper body strength, then possibly return to TIRR for additional in-depth inpatient treatment. We continue to look to God and trust Him to heal my body completely. The Lord has opened up some other alternatives we are looking at which are therapeutic for the injuries that I had. Please be in prayer for the Lord to direct our steps. Thank you again for your continued encouragement and prayers. Ron & Cathy 🌺

Happy Thanksgiving. Cathy and I continue to appreciate our friends and supporters. Cathy is still waiting to begin her outpatient therapy as well as getting her new power chair. She has been using a flawed loaner which has caused problems. Cathy has been doing her own therapy including pull down weight bar, motor foot pedal machine and nerve stimulation for muscle contractions. There are increased sensory sensations below the level of paralysis which is a good sign of nerves waking up but it also translates into a lot of pain. The healthcare providers say there is no gain without this kind of pain. Please pray for Cathy for continued improvement and strength to deal with the pain. Please also pray for strength for me as I sometimes get weary but I look forward to Gods plan. Thanks and love to all.

Update:

Cathy came home 10/27, Thursday. Her completed therapy has strengthened her upper body and arms so she is able to assist with moves from bed to chair and vice versa. Still full paralysis from chest down so many challenges ahead. Cathy will continue her own therapy at home until she starts out patient therapy at TIRR in the Woodlands beginning mid November. As always we sincerely appreciate your prayers and would ask that they continue fervently as we know her significant progress is due in large part to the healing power of our Lord and Savior.

🚨Update 10/20 🚨

While still paraplegic from chest down, Cathy continues to work hard in both physical and occupational (activities of daily living) therapy until discharge on 10/27 to home where a whole new set of challenges begin. Cathy has been thrown additional challenges like today she was advised that, after a couple of weeks ago her left side upper molars cracked from the accident were pulled out and a hole was opened into her sinus plus some debris left caused an infection in her maxillary sinuses, and a regimen of powerful antibiotics did not remedy it, she is going to have another surgery by an ENT surgeon with possible assist by dental surgeons. Her appointment consult is set for 10/26, the day before her discharge from TIRR. We feel strengthened and remain grateful for your prayers and support. Love to all.

🚨Update 10/16🚨
After many examinations and another CT scan it was determined that the pain syndrome caused by a nursing assistant was due to inflammation of a nerve that runs below each rib on her right side. Accordingly a steroid dose pack was started to try to quiet down the inflammation and help relieve some of the extreme pain that comes from movement. That has been somewhat successful although certainly not complete as of yet. Because of that nursing error our stay in TIRR has been extended by the administration to October 27 to allow time for more therapy that was not possible due to pain. We are grateful for that and intend to fully take advantage of it. you may recall that Cathy had two broken molars extracted, one of which left a 3 mm hole into her sinus cavity. It was plugged with gel foam but she developed a severe sinus infection in the maxillary sinuses on the left side of her face. We went to the Memorial Hermann hospital by ambulance to Have further examination by the dental surgeons. It was found that a piece of dental material left over from a old root canal was mistakenly left between her gums and sinus cavity which probably led to the infection. They are going to try to kill off the infection with Augmentin but if not successful she will need another dental surgery by an ENT to remove the offending material. Our trip back from Memorial Hermann to TIRR was also a disaster since we were done by 8:30 PM but no one called for an ambulance to take us back until almost 10:15 PM. The resulting time on the hospital bed created a skin lesion which now has to be addressed. We had a meeting Thursday and specified out the Power chair for her return home. It won’t be ready for several weeks after she returns home so she’ll be in a less desirable loaner chair until then but we’re grateful to have anything that will work. She will also actively be working on building up her upper body to transfer from the bed to her chair on a transfer board instead of having to use the sling and hoist. Despite all of the adversity Cathy and I remain hopeful and joyful because we know that the Lord will deliver us from the situation and has great plans for us in a future together. We also covet and appreciate all of the continued support from all of our brothers and sisters in Christ and the prayers that you pray for her healing and success as well as my well being. Love to all. ❤️😎

🚨Update 10/1 🚨
Cathy continues to work hard on upper body muscle strength. Tim and Sue Newman ( brother and sister in law) uncovered a great deal for a handicap van. Ron and Tim drove to Elgin on Friday and Ron purchased it. 2015 Chrysler Town and Country Van with only 22,000 miles for $20,000 equipped with ramp into side door. We are grateful and it’s a true blessing. This checks a big box for the planned initial discharge on 10/20. More support equipment to obtain to get our home ready. Lots of focused hard work ahead. Cathy remains determined to walk. Thanks and love to all.

Please continue to share the Go Fund Me link, anything helps! They are coming out of pocket for all expenses & it is a lot & overwhelming! Thank you everyone, keep the prayers & love coming! Please share all posts so others can join this page & stay updated!

🚨Update 9/28 🚨

I had asked for consult with Nuerosurgeon since we haven’t spoken to one re update since 8/22. Dr advised that she would get chest X-ray then confirm that Cathy can remove her body brace. Yay! Also see photo on nerve impulse pedal machine designed to make legs pedal even though paralyzed. Doesn’t cure the paralysis but helps to wake up the nerves. Finally, we are overwhelmed with required equipment needed on initial discharge not covered by insurance. This includes a basic electric body lift instead of a hand crank, handicap van, combination shower and toilet roller chair, body sling, hospital bed that raises up, etc. We do appreciate the Finacial support which was so critical in getting the medical flight. Our challenges continue and covet, as always, your prayer support. Love to all. ❤️😎

Please help ease their burden of finances by donating if possible! Thank you everyone! Please share! 💓

🚨Update 9/27🚨

Had several good therapy sessions. In therapy that involved electronic stimulation of specific muscle groups in each leg, Cathy felt for the first time the stimulation which meant a nerve impulse made it from her leg to her brain. It’s a small start but huge significance. Praise God! Please continue to give focused prayer for nerve improvement.
Thanks. ❤️😎

Post accident surgical hardware, ribs and spine.

🚨Update 9/25

Update:
Cathy continues to heal her rib fractures but is only about halfway there. Her trach was removed Friday. Yay! The wound check today revealed her trach incision was already closed! Yay! Her healing is great. We need some focused prayer to reverse the paralysis. Cathy is working hard in therapy but we are impatient for signs of improvement. Lord let us trust you more and give us a spirit of patience.

This is a pic of the lift getting her into her chair!

‼️UPDATE 9/21‼️

Cathy has been totally off ventilator for over a week and respiratory function has stabilized which is a big step forward. Next week she will get her trach out. That’s ahead of schedule. This week Cathy was strapped in and stood up on a tilt table with her blood pressure staying in good range. That is 3 months ahead of schedule per therapist. This will allow her to engage in more aggressive therapy sooner. Cathy is making great progress no doubt powered by God’s grace in response to your prayers. She had a successful day of dental surgery to remove teeth broken in her fall. Check that box finally. Thanks for your continued support and uplifting prayers.
