Phantom Druid – ‘Death & Destiny’ (Off The Record Label)
With this debut album Holland’s Phantom Druid have released a classic old-school doom metal album that echoes (obviously) Black Sabbath but also Swedish Gods Count Raven, which is always a good thing. Then you find out that this is just one person, the multi-talented Tjeerd De Jong, who truly understands and obviously loves doom metal as these masterpieces of the morose easily prove that. From opening number ‘Colossal Gate’ with its supremely chunky riffing, through the very Black Sabbath-like gentle interlude ‘Soul Coffin’ to the heavy fu***ng metal closing song ‘Autumn Shroud’, Phantom Druid never waiver from the true doom path. De Jong’s guitar is intense even for doom metal while his vocals do echo a young John Osbourne with their hypnotic mantras, not forgetting the thick rhythm section that backs it up with solid and very heavy doom! Even though ‘Death & Destiny’ never changes pace, it beautifully chugs along with its true doom hymns, it is an exhilarating experience that transfixes you beyond reason. An album that keeps true doom’s flame burning bright.
