Meet María Laura Ortiz, our Executive Director.

Academy Chair at The World’s Best Vineyards, Member of the GWC International Experts Panel, Country Ambassador of International Wine Challenge, Executive Director of Global Women of Wine, and South American producer of Tim Atkin MW
Laura is a well-known sommelier in Argentina and an international wine judge (IWC, Mundus Vini, Pinnacle Wine Awards, among others). She is the founder of Winifera, a company specializing in wine consulting, PR, and marketing. Laura is also the co-founder of Club de Mujeres del Vino (Wine Women Club), a non-profit organization for professional women in the Argentine wine industry. A former vice-president of the Argentine Sommelier Association and Member of the Education Committee at Association de la Sommellerie Internationale. Laura is a qualified sommelier (Diploma Association de la Sommellerie Internationale, WSET’s Advanced Certification, Certified Sommelier of the Court of Master Sommeliers, Diploma WorldSomm in Bordeaux, France, Certified in Wine Management at San Francisco Wine School, the USA and a student at Advanced Sommelier Exam in the US and Diploma WSET in the UK). She is also the producer of Tim Atkin’s South America reports, Descorchados Argentina wine guide and Wine Curator of South America Wine Guide.
Meet Alison Eisermann Ctercteko MW, our Oceanian leader.
Alison Ctercteko, MW
Alison is a Sydney and Tasmanian based Master of Wine working in various industry roles but predominantly wine education in Australia and Hong Kong.
Alison began her career in the wine industry working as an Agriculture Educator and while undertaking an Oenology Degree through Charles Sturt University, Australia. Her earlier qualifications include a Degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology and Graduate Diploma in Education. In 2013 Alison qualified as a Master of Wine.
The largest project for a period of over 10 years was establishing and managing a 110ha vineyard in Central New South Wales and later producing wines in their boutique winery for 8 years.
After relocating to Sydney Alison continued winemaking, vineyard consulting, wine lecturing presenting WSET courses at all levels, developing course materials, and corporate training. Also over the past five years, she has been lecturing for Asia Wine Service and Education Centre (AWSEC) Hong Kong and China.
Alison has been judging at Australian regional and State shows for 25 years and as a Panel Chair for the past 17 years at the International Wine Challenge (IWC). Alison has travelled extensively through the world's key wine regions and judged wines from most styles and countries. Alison is an Australian Wine Show Auditor.
Alison is currently involved with the Institute of Masters of Wine in their education programme, course days, and assessments.
Another passion is a small Pinot Noir vineyard and guesthouse in Tasmania.
Meet Christy Canterbury MW, our American leader
Christy Canterbury, MW
Christy Canterbury was the seventh woman in the US to earn the Master of Wine title, receiving the Villa Maria Award for Outstanding Performance in the Viticulture Examination. She is a New York City-based journalist, speaker and critic.
Christy is a Panel Chair at the International Wine Challenge and judges other competitions, including Decanter, the Best Italian Wine Awards, Ultimate Wine Challenge, Argentina World Wine Awards and TEXSOM International Wine Awards. Her recent and upcoming appearances include Chief Wine Officer events, ProWein, VinExpo, ViniSud, TEXSOM and the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair.
In 2014, Christy was short-listed for the Roederer Online Wine Communicator of the Year Award. Her work has been published in Decanter, Wine Enthusiast, Edible Green Mountains, Wine-Searcher, TimAtkin.com, LE PAN, Beverage Media, Food Arts, Civiltà del Bere, Wine Business Monthly, TASTED, Selectus Wines, Wine. Luxe and in many other outlets around the world. Christy is the Consulting Editor of the GOURMAND AWARD-winning book, Rock and Vine, the Wine Editor for Sunday Pasta and the Italy Editor for the Professional Wine Reference.
Previously, Christy directed restaurant beverage programs around the world for Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group and Culinary Concepts by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. She also spearheaded wine purchasing for leading New York and Hong Kong retailers, Zachys and Italian Wine Merchants.
Meet Sarah Heller MW, our Asian leader.
Sarah Heller, MW
Sarah Heller MW is a wine expert, content creator and visual artist based in Hong Kong and at 30 is the youngest female and Asia-Pacific’s youngest Master of Wine.
Sarah created Radix as a platform for projects targeting a new generation of wine lovers in Asia and beyond. She is a partner and buyer for the Almásy Collection, a Central European wine brand; brand ambassador and design collaborator for Lucaris Crystal; sits on the faculty of the Vinitaly International Academy, is the wine editor for Asia Tatler and is a consultant for WINE100, China’s largest wine competition. She is the creator of an art series called Visual Tasting Notes and her educational videos have over 3.5 million students.
She is frequently invited to speak on subjects including Asian wine markets, wine marketing and E-commerce and regularly judges wine competitions like the Cathay Pacific HKIWSC and Decanter Asia Wine Awards.
Having graduated from Yale University with a fine art degree, Sarah began her career in the New York and Hong Kong wine trades and wineries in France and Italy. She was Executive Director of events and education firm Meiburg Wine Media in Hong Kong for several years.
As well as a Master of Wine and DipWSET, Sarah is a SWE Certified Specialist of Wine and Spirits. Sarah speaks English, Chinese, German, Italian and French with some proficiency in Spanish and basic Korean.
Meet Cathy Van Zyl, our African leader.
Cathy Van Zyl, MW
Cathy started her wine journey on a bicycle: she asked her husband to ride SA’s famed Cape Town Cycle Tour with her; he accepted if she attended a wine course with him. She has since notched up more than 21 tours – and passed the prestigious Master of Wine examination in 2005.
Previously chair of the Institute of Masters of Wine’s education committee, she is now a member of its Council. Cathy judges locally and internationally, and is the SA contributor to Le Grand Tasting app by Bettane+Desseauve.
She occasionally contributes to wine journals and websites around the world but spends most of her wine-time as associate editor of this guide. In 2019, she was named as the Cape Wine Masters’ Personality of the Year for her passionate promotion of South African wine at every conceivable opportunity.
Meet Natasha Hughes, our European leader!
Natasha Hughes MW graduated as a Master of Wine in 2014, winning four out of the seven prizes awarded that year, including the Outstanding Achievement Award.
Natasha began her wine trade career as deputy editor for Decanter’s website but left in 2001 to pursue work as a freelance journalist and has since written for numerous prestigious publications and websites, including Decanter, Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine, wwwjancisrobinson.com, and www.timatkin.com.
Natasha has written extensively about food and wine pairing and was a finalist in the Pio Cesare Food and Wine Writer category of the Roederer Awards in 2015 and 2017.
Natasha consults for restaurants, private clients, wine producers and generic bodies. She is a panel chair at the International Wine Challenge and has also chaired the judging at Georgia’s National Wine Competition and the UK’s Sommelier Wine Awards. She has been a member of judging panels in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, China, Australia and the Czech Republic.
In addition, Natasha hosts wine events, seminars and tutored tastings for both consumers and members of the wine trade, teaches blind tasting to Master of Wine students, and leads trips to wine regions for private clients. She is also

A very sad and a Devastating situation in Australia currently with a Bushfires in such extreme conditions.
We are so sad about the loss of property, people, wildlife and beautiful natural environments.
Many of Our fantastic wine regions will be impacted this season.
Thanks to the hard-working volunteers and rural firefighters from Australia and abroad helping out.
Such long term devastation I’ve never seen.
