Michael Sopejstal, who lives in Illinois, said he takes a drive through Indiana over to Michigan every few weeks to eat at his favorite restaurant. He also makes sure to buy a Lucky for Life ticket for 10 or 20 draws, according to the Michigan Lottery.

On September 17, the retailer at a GoLo gas station made a mistake, accidentally printing a ticket with 10 lines for a single draw, Sopejstal told the Lottery. Sopejstal told the retailer he still wanted it.

“I checked my ticket one morning and saw that I had won $25,000 a year for life,” he told Lottery officials. “I immediately started thinking about all the things I could do with the money and whether I wanted to take the lump sum or annuity option. It was an amazing feeling!”

The 60-year-old visited Lottery headquarters recently to claim his prize, according to the Lottery. He chose the one-time lump sum payment of $390,000, instead of $25,000 a year for 20 years or life, whichever is greater, the Lottery said.

Sopejstal told the Lottery he plans to use his prize money to travel and save the rest.

Lucky for Life is played in about two dozen states as well as in Washington, D.C. Prizes range from $3 to a top prize of $1,000 a day for life.

The overall odds of winning for each game are posted on the game’s website. Sopejstal’s odds of winning five white balls on September 17 were 1 in more than 1.8 million.

Johnnie Taylor, 71, of Howard Beach in Queens, has won the record-setting $476 million Mega Millions jackpot from April 14, 2023. This is the largest Mega Millions prize won in New York State since the game launched in the state in 2002.

The winning Mega Millions numbers for the drawing were 23-27-41-48-51, with Mega Ball 22.

Taylor opted to take the cash value of the annuitized prize, a lump sum payment totaling $157,288,402 after required state and federal withholding.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” Taylor said, noting that his wife didn’t believe him when he told her that he knew who won the jackpot and then announced he had won the top prize. She was skeptical, so he went online to prove that the numbers on his ticket matched all the winning numbers.

Taylor, who recently retired from his job as a building handyman in Manhattan, already has some plans for his winnings. He wants to travel, buy a new home, and replace his 2012 Prius with a newer model hybrid vehicle. He also plans to donate to his local church.

Taylor typically buys his tickets at Liberty Beer and Convenience in Queens, a convenience store near his local subway station. He regularly plays Mega Millions and Powerball quick pick tickets and adds the multiplier when jackpots rise to $100 million.

Liberty Beer and Convenience, located at 93-18 Liberty Avenue, will receive a $10,000 bonus from the New York Lottery for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.

“The New York Lottery congratulates Mr. Taylor on winning this historic jackpot, the sales for which brought millions of dollars to New York’s public schools and lottery retailers across the state,” said New York State Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer.

The ticket sales leading up to the $476 million jackpot brought a significant fiscal impact to New York State’s Aid to Education, Lottery retailers and players. The jackpot rolled 21 times ahead of the April 14 drawing generating more than $21 million for education, $4.1 million in commissions for retailers, and $10.4 million in non-jackpot winnings for players.

The previous New York State record Mega Millions win was a $437 million jackpot sold in Huntington in 2019.

It's not often that you walk out of a grocery store with more money than you came in with, but that was the case for a Louisville woman recently.

According to Kentucky Lottery officials, the woman stopped at the Bardstown Road Kroger on Tuesday to get a drink and bought two $10 scratch-offs.

It wasn't until she got home that she scratched off her tickets, with every number on one of them being a winner.

“I saw I matched my first number and assumed it was $5, but I saw $6,000 and couldn’t believe it," the woman said.

She had already won $180,000, but when she turned her ticket over, she won the bonus game as well, bringing her winnings to $225,000.

Lottery officials said she called her kids over, and they couldn't believe she had won either.

After taxes, the woman took home a check for $160,875. Kroger will receive $2,250 for selling the winning ticket.

A California truck driver’s habit of buying lottery tickets in every state he drives through turned out to be a lucrative one.

Quang Vo, 59, of El Monte, California, won a $1 million prize from a Powerball drawing off a ticket he bought while in Florida.

Florida Lottery officials announced Vo’s win Wednesday, saying it came on a drawing in the multistate game on Dec. 9. His ticket matched all five of the white ball numbers but did not match the Powerball number for a jackpot.

“I try to buy a Lottery ticket in every state I pass through when I’m on the road,” Vo told Florida Lottery. “You never know when you could be a winner.”

Vo bought his lucky ticket from the Ocala Stopping Center at 7401 West Highway 318 in Reddick. The retailer gets a $1,000 bonus commission.

Why don't billionaires buy every single lottery ticket combination for big pots as an investment? Is this not viable? 12/06/2018

Quora Why don't billionaires buy every single lottery ticket combination for big pots as an investment? Is this not viable?

Answer 1
A light sign could not fit the record highest power ball payout at a local liquor store in Washington.

At the time of this writing, the headline Powerball jackpot is up to $1.5 billion. The cash grand prize is estimated at $930 million.

In a Powerball draw, five white balls are drawn from a drum with 69 balls and one red ball is drawn from a drum with 26 balls. If you match all six numbers, you win the jackpot. If you a partial match with some of the numbers, you win a smaller fixed prize.

There are 11,238,513 ways to draw five white balls from a drum of 69 balls. Multiply that by the 26 red balls, are there are a total of 292,201,338 possible Powerball tickets.

At $2 for each ticket, then, it would be possible to buy every single possible ticket for $584,402,676. As a journalist, I don’t have that much money sitting around, but either a consortium of a few million Americans or a large and wealthy institution like a bank could conceivably assemble that level of cash.

With the sky-high jackpot in play, this actually at a first glance guarantees a profit (at least before taxes). Since we’ve bought every single ticket exactly once, we can see how much we will win based on the jackpot and the smaller prizes:

Indeed, this is something of a low ball estimate: As we are buying another half billion dollars worth of tickets, part of that money will be added into the jackpot pool.

Of course, there are a few extra complications to this project.

Actually buying 292 million tickets

The first problem is the actual physical act of buying 292 million Powerball tickets and filling them out by hand. Since we need to very carefully and systematically make sure we get every single possible ticket, using the computer generated random quick draw will not work for us.

According to Statista, JP Morgan Chase Bank has about 189,000 employees. That means that there are about 1,546 possible Powerball tickets for each employee. If each employee spent ten hours a day buying and filling out Powerball tickets for three days, this would mean each employee would need to fill out about 50 tickets per hour. So, while this would be extremely difficult to do and perhaps not the best use of a large organisation’s resources, it seems that it might be physically possible, if somewhat gruelling, to actually buy every Powerball ticket.

Similarly, a large decentralized consortium of several thousand or a few million Americans connected over the internet — something like an office Powerball pool on a mass scale — would be physically capable of buying 292 million lottery tickets. Of course, the logistical coordination of such a consortium would be a daunting task, and one could imagine various legal and practical difficulties with distributing the money after the drawing.

Splitting the jackpot

The second and much larger problem with our comprehensive Powerball scheme is the risk of splitting the jackpot. While the fixed prizes do provide about $93 million of our winnings, the overwhelming bulk of the money comes from the big prize.

That would mean splitting the jackpot two or more ways with other players would be absolutely devastating to our plan. A two way split cash prize jackpot would give us $465 million before taxes. Adding in the fixed prizes, we get a total of about $558 million in winnings, which is now less than the ticket costs of about $584 million, leaving us a loss of nearly $26 million.

The likelihood of splitting the pot is determined by how many other tickets are sold. Business Insider looked at this after the January 6 drawing in which there were no winners, paving the way to the current insanely high jackpot. Following the logic from that post, we can estimate our odds of getting the jackpot alone based on a few guesses about ticket sales.

According to Lottoreport.com, a site that tracks lottery sales and jackpots, 440,321,172 tickets were sold before Saturday’s drawing. With that many tickets sold, and under the assumption that everyone else playing Powerball is picking numbers more or less at random and independently from each other, there’s just a 22% chance that we would be the only winner.

We could also expect that, with the over a billion dollar headline prize, even more tickets will be sold before Wednesday’s drawing, greatly hurting our chances of walking away with the full jackpot without having to share:

Other people trying the same thing we are

The above analysis of our odds of splitting the pot assumed that all the other tickets sold were to normal people who would choose their numbers more or less at random. But, seeing as we are going all in and buying every single ticket, it’s possible that someone else could be attempting this as well. There are, after all, several organisations in the US that have the financial and personnel resources to theoretically go out and buy 292 million Powerball tickets.

Of course, if two or more banks or consortia tried this plan, they would be certain to have to split the pot and thus lose a bunch of money. This situation is similar to the game Chicken, in which two drivers start out driving directly at each other. If one driver swerves while the other keeps going straight, the first driver “loses” and the second driver”wins”. If both drivers swerve, the game is a draw. Naturally, if both drivers keep going straight, their cars crash and they die in a fiery wreck.

In Chicken, the strategy you adopt depends on what you think the other driver is going to do (assuming you’re actually playing something as reckless and stupid as Chicken in the first place). If you think he’s crazy enough to keep barreling forward, you should be more likely to swerve. If you believe on the other hand that he’s going to veer out of the way first, then you might be more likely to kee driving straight.

Banks or billionaires with thousands of employees that are considering buying every Powerball ticket need to make a similar consideration. If there’s a low likelihood that a competitor is going to also mobilize a small army of people in a bid to win a historically high lottery jackpot, then perhaps that risk is worth taking. If, on the other hand, we think that there might be not just one but several other wealthy organisations or people that are making similar plans to our own, we should stay out of the fray.

Answer 2
So back when the power ball was 1.6 billion dollars I actually looked into logistically what it would take to buy every single combination of the powerball and here what I found out.

It would cost $600 Million to buy all the combinations. So assuming you have that much money and the jack pot is bigger than that, move to step 2.
Assuming it takes an average of 1 second to put in an order and print a single combination for the lottery ticket it would take a little over 3000 days to buy and print all of the combination. Since the power ball drawing is held every Wednesday and Saturday, so you have roughly 3 days to buy all the combinations which means you will need a thousand people to buy the ticket for you none stop 24/7 in a thousand different story. Logistically this extremely difficult but lets say miraculously you pulled this step off please see step 3.
After you buy the tickets you will need to transport and store all the tickets after purchasing, assuming each ticket has the same thickness as a dollar bill, all the tickets would stack up to a height of 15 miles. So trying to transport and store all the tickets until the draw would also be an logistically nightmare. Assuming you pull this step off please see step 4.
Now assuming that you pulled off the incredibly feat of logistics to get to this point, the next step would be for you to pray that no one else bought the winning ticket because if they did you would need to split the payout, but lets assume no one splits and you are the only winner, proceed to next step
Now assuming you are the sole winner, then you have two options, lump sum or annual payment. Now you wouldn’t want to take the annual payment because due to time cost of money (money worth less in the future). Assuming you take the lump sum, for the 1.6 billion dollar payout you are only going to get 950 million which after taxes gets reduced to 650 million dollar. So that means on a very very very good day (you are the only winner) and assuming you pulled off some incredible feat of logistics you might win $40 million dollars (or 6% ROI) while you risk losing hundreds of millions incase you get unlucky or there is an error in our logistic plan……

In summary, most people who are smart enough to have 600 million dollar in cash laying around would be smart enough (or have people smart enough around them) to do the same cursory analysis that I did and realize that its not worth doing……..However there are stories of people doing similar things for smaller lotteries but those are not as interesting to talk about :).
