You’re not going to believe this…
But this is me standing on a frozen lake.
And I was so afraid I couldn’t look down to the water.
But when I did, I saw one of te most breathtaking views.
And then it just hit me…
You know when we say “I should lose weight”
“I should take better care of myself”
“I should spend more time with my family”
“I should…”?!
We have all these things we know we should do but we just don’t.
And suddenly I realized why.
Because we’ve lost the ability to truly focus on what matters.
As human beings we are very easily swayed by the huge load of information around us…
We lose focus and we start to lose our power in things that don’t matter.
And we miss the most important things in life.
I was so afraid of the lake that I couldn’t bring myself to be present.
That’s what happens to us, we are so focused on our fears and what is lacking that we can’t see what is right in front of us.
Listen, the answer that you’ve been seeking has probably been said or shown to you over and over again.
But you’re too busy…
The ability to focus on what truly matters is one of the greatest skills we can acquire in this lifetime.
Now, what are you focused on?
Motherhood changed me in a lot of ways.
But the biggest shift was on my way to pursue my goals.
Before becoming a mother I’d plan and strategize.
And think about the practical steps.
It was all about the goal in itself.
Now everything changed.
As my mentor Melanie Ann Layer said:
Reaching our goals is inevitable,
What matters is not what you’re trying to get but who you’re becoming while you’re at it.
Now I’m aware that the journey will always affect me, for better or for worse, whether I want it or not.
So I’ve learned to work with the transformation that the journey will cause and that is out my control.
When thinking about a specific goal, I ask myself
“What kind of mother will I be once I’ve achieved this goal?”
Now it’s not only about creating a better life.
It’s about becoming a better mother while I work towards my desires.
Because if I’m not a better person and mother at the end, then it won’t be worth it, no matter the reward.
When thinking about what you want, ask yourself “what kind of person and parent I’ll be once I have this?”
Life is about the little things.
