Get off the hamster wheel!
"How to quiet quit absolutely everything"
Sure, you can strive less in the workplace.
But what happens when you dial down bigger things, like parenting, relationships and even showering?
Coined in 2009, the phrase âquiet quittingâ means simply, go to work for your contracted hours, do what youâre asked to do, and nothing more.
It has come into its own in the past few years, since lockdown, colliding with the Chinese movement tang ping (âlying flatâ) to become a global phenomenon: go to work, sure, but donât be striving the whole damn time.
Now, after many viral videos on TikTok, with young people discovering what trade unions have known for more than a century, it is spreading like wildfire.
A Gallup poll found that nearly half the US workforce would describe themselves as âquiet quittersâ.
I reject the concept, from a workplace perspective: it merely means doing what youâre contractually required to do.
This I would call âworkâ. Anything more than this is âhustleâ.
The love-your-work culture has become so dominant that âgoing above and beyondâ is now often in the job description (recently abbreviated to âpassionateâ), which is ridiculous. If you said that in a relationship â âI want you to meet my stated needs, but also guess at other, potentially limitless, needs and meet those tooâ â youâd be called controlling and abusive, or at the very least, a bit of a handful.
But is there some wisdom in the idea of quiet quitting, applied to other parts of life?

Grants Programme deadline is fast approaching !!
is offering grants of up to ÂŁ3,000 for voluntary, community, and not-for-profit organisations across England to deliver cycling events for beginners, people returning to cycling after a period of inactivity, and other people who do not cycle regularly or are experiencing challenges and perceived barriers to access.
The Big Bike Revival Grants programme, funded by the Department for Transport, will support projects that:
Inspire and encourage the substantial proportion of the population who do not cycle, to start cycling.
Increase the number of people that cycle by addressing the fact that a high proportion of adults in England own bikes but are not making use of them.
Increase the number of trips made by bike by addressing the fact that adults in Britain appear to be aware of cycling and its potential for shorter journeys but have safety concerns about using it as a form of travel.
Improve the perception of cycling safety by providing opportunities for people to access supported cycling activities, training on how to cycle safely and how to keep bikes in safe working order.
Gr- ants can be used for costs associated with project delivery, such as cycling equipment, costs associated with repairing and maintaining bikes, promotional materials, PPE equipment, or refreshments and transport for volunteers and participants.
The deadline for applications is 10 October 2022.

The Mini Budget â What it Means for Businesses
The Chancellor has announced the newly-formed Governmentâs initial borrowing and spending plans in his first fiscal statement.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, , has delivered his Mini Budget statement to Parliament :
The statement comes in the midst of a crisis and follows a warning from the that the country may already be in recession.
Over the âmedium termâ the aims to achieve a trend rate of growth of 2.5%, by expanding the supply side of the economy through tax incentives and reform.
Comprising a range of interventions intended to achieve prosperity through growth, the Plan includes the following measures for UK businesses:
- Energy
The Chancellor said the Governmentâs Relief scheme will reduce wholesale energy costs for businesses, charities and public sector bodies across the UK, providing a price guarantee equivalent to that offered to households.
Addressing the volatility of energy prices and the associated risks to energy firms that are otherwise viable businesses, the Chancellor announced a new Energy Markets Financing Scheme.
- Tax
Major tax reforms have been outlined to allow businesses to retain more of their profits.
The aim is to encourage investment, boost productivity and create new jobs.
New measures include cancelling the planned rise in , keeping it at 19%, and reversing the 1.25% rise in National Insurance contributions.
The Government says this intervention will save 920,000 businesses an average of ÂŁ10,000 in 2023.
The Chancellor also announced more relief for businesses by making the Annual Investment Allowance ÂŁ1 million permanently, rather than letting it return to ÂŁ200,000 in March 2023.
