Ethos Yoga
Ethos Yoga is a movement dedicated to curriculum-based yoga offerings.
Our goal is to shift the way we show up for one another & our planet, by raising money & awareness around environmental & social justice.
If we don't do it, it's not going to work. We all need to take the restrictions from Gov. Inslee seriously, so that our small businesses can reopen & remain open for the longterm.๐ช๐ผ๐ช๐ฝ๐ช๐ฟ When COVID-19 spreads, the individuals effected are disproportionately communities of color, immigrants, and other marginalized populations. When a business closes its doors, every single employee takes the hit. This is about people, this is about the heart of our community, this is about a web of connections much bigger than yourself.๐
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
But just because we're taking precautions, doesn't mean we can't continue to show up to keep our community alive.๐ฅ While all small business and their employees are affected, restaurants and fitness are especially limited under the current restrictions. If you are able to extend support, consider doing so in any of the ways weโve listed here. Please share anything else you know in the comments below.
Let's come together and do this. Together, we can do anything!! We wholeheartedly believe that.๐
Part of what we explore in yoga is the state of curiosity.๐ In this place of exploration our hearts remain open, whereas certainty is a pretty good way to close the heart down.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
Even in a pose that you have done hundreds of times before, what have you not yet explored in this place? What is in relationship & how is it in relationship? Can you embody this shape even more fully?
๐LIVE INTO THE QUESTIONS๐
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
This place of uncertainty is your gift, a massive opportunity to lean in and engage more deeply. ๐
Name it.๐ฅ

June 19, 1865, news finally reached Texas (2.5 years after the emancipation proclamation) that the enslaved were now FREE.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
135 years later, we are still fighting for full realization of that freedom.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
One of the biggest lessons yoga has taught us is how to live in integrity. Not only to feel into our beliefs & values, but the importance of action & turning those ideals into a lived experience. THIS is what black people have pushed for in our country.
We proclaimed equality, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in our founding documents, and yet we were not putting those words into action. Each time our black communities take a stand toward equality, they push all of us toward greater integrity with these founding words. We are challenged to not only write down on paper the America we want to be, but to fully live the America we want to beโin our hearts, with our communities, and as a nation.๐บ๐ธ
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
It is to our black communities that we give
abundant gratitude. For their tireless strength, patience and perseverance in leading our collective to a better version of itself.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
May today be a reminder to walk in integrity and to join our black communities in the fight for freedom.

We want to remind you that itโs not helpful to shame yourself or others for feeling tired, uncomfortable, or confused right now. Yes, this is the process of coming up against one's privilege, but creating shame around those emotions stunts our ability to actually work WITH them.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
Why?๐ค Because shame SUPPRESSES what we're feeling & stuffs it away. We have to allow, so that we can actually process what's there, learn from it, and transform it.โจ
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
Yes, this is a little bit of a slippery slope into ego indulgence, and so we offer you this:
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
๐ปIS THIS ALLOWING ME TO FACE, OR IS THIS ALLOWING ME TO HIDE?๐ป
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
In the process of addressing your needs & emotions, ask yourself this question. ie. By taking a moment to rest, am I allowing myself to better FACE and show up in the long run, or am I HIDING, so that I can avoid the work?
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
๐ป Decompress with friends & then COME BACK.
๐ป Unplug for a night of self-care & then COME BACK.
๐ป Pickup a trash novel & then COME BACK.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
What matters is that we find a sustainable way to be in this work for the long haul.
We are currently living in the chrysalis, and do you know what happens to a caterpillar while it is in metamorphosis? It eats itself.๐ณ That's right, it has to integrate and ingest the whole of its being before it can turn into something beautiful, break free, and fly. The process is not pretty, but in the end itโs the exact nourishment thatโs needed.๐ฆ

To be a disruptor.โก๏ธโก๏ธ In the world of business to "disrupt the market" is seen as a good thing. This is how innovation & progress happen. It's how we went from VHS, to DVD, to streaming. Society is no different. ใฐ๏ธ Speak up ใฐ๏ธ act out ใฐ๏ธ SHOW UP to disrupt outdated systems & norms. โก๏ธ This is how we make way for progress.

There is something we need to callout.๐ฃ As we look around at our white community members jumping into action, it's important to remember that this movement is not about inviting BIPOC into YOUR world. Your world, whether you feel you created it or not, was not designed to make BIPOC feel safe, equal or human. What we need is an American culture that is altogether NEW. And anyone who has ever built anything from the ground up knows, this is going take a lot of work. In the same way that you don't just open a new business without knowing your industry, studying your target market, and building a team of support around you, we can't build a new culture until white folks reckon with history & do the work of unraveling deep seeded conditioning. So make the space, transfer resources to BIPOC communities and let's get to work rewriting the culture of who we want to be.๐๐ฝ๐๐พ๐๐ฟ
Ethos friend and mentor, Lauren Kite () is teaming up with Casey Tonnelly to hold White Caucus events on June 13 + 18.
"We are starting up THIS MONTH, two monthly gatherings, where we will unpack whiteness, how white supremacy functions around and through you at all times, and how to interrupt these deeply ingrained programs that not only impact you, but your ability to actually be in community with others, and so ๐๐ผmuch๐๐ผmore๐๐ผ!"
We cannot recommend Lo's work & leadership enough. We have learned & continue to learn so much from her vast experience and fierce love. All white ETHOS yogis, WE ENCOURAGE YOU to show up for this work right here in your community! The links are in our bio to register.
Please note, these events are sliding scale, no participant turned away for lack of funds. That being said, we encourage you to pay what you can. While activists do what they do out of their love, their work is very important for all of us and it's important to show up with your dollar to support them & their work when possible. They are accepting payments via venmo:

We are taking a sacred moment to be in the conversations & contemplations, that we hope will allow us to be of greatest service to you, our & greater Seattle Yoga community. While we gather our emotions and wrangle the troops, we hope youโll join us by taking part in the actions and resources that can be explored right now, THIS VERY MOMENT.โ๐ฟ๐ฅ We know that these lists could go on forever, so if you feel like we have missed anyone or anything, especially specific to Seattle, please leave it in the comments below. Sending great love, strength & bravery to all of you.๐ค๐ค

If you haven't already been able to tell, at Ethos Yoga we are not too interested in "doing business as usual." Where some businesses make money to get rich, our goal is to use our profits to make the planet & community rich.๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ We believe that capitalism is not inherently evil and that business can be used as a force for POSITIVE CHANGE. As yogis, as leaders and as entrepreneurs, this is our promise to the world.โจ
"How would the world be different if every human took 20 minutes every day to rest?" Roe (.moment) offered us this contemplation from her teacher Judith Lasater in Sunday's Exploring Savasana. And right there, the power of REST felt so very tangible & real. ๐ฃ๐ฅWe are grateful to this beautiful teacher for holding space & dedicating her work to just this; the art of slowing down, the sacred pause, a moment to rest. In doing so, Roe invites us into more patience & compassion. In a culture where slowing down can be seen as a radical act, and we thank Roe for leading our Ethos Community in this practice of rebellion.๐ฆน๐ฝโโ๏ธ
Join her Thursday evenings for Release & Restore (Upper Body) and Sundays for Exploring Savasana. Descriptions for these courses can be found in our highlights & on the website. And lastly, get to know more about Roe via the "Meet our Teaching Collective" link in our bio.๐๐ฟ
We talk a lot about "living in integrity" at . And let us be clear, integrity is not about being "good." It's not about following societal norms or living up to your social conditioning. INTEGRITY comes from an ability to dig deep inside, to KNOW ONESELF, and then to live from that place.๐It's about living on the outside, what is true in on the inside. THIS is what we are cultivating through the studies of yoga. ๐๐ผ๐๐พ๐๐ฟ
The day your certainty outweighs your questioning is the day you run into trouble.๐ง Ethos Instructor Malory Monahan () is a walking reminder of this lesson. As a self proclaimed cynic, she has taken her own life down a deep path of inquiry.๐We believe that Mallory is such a powerful teacher because she is full of questioning & she encourages you to be the same. Pair with that her sharp eye & keen intellect, and you have a teacher that powerfully draws you into awareness & precision, transforming how you move in and interact with the world.๐ฅ
Check out Mallory's Empowering Your Practice Course Tues + Thurs @ noon. And head to the Teaching Collective link on our website to learn more about this amazing teacher.๐๐ผ๐๐พ๐๐ฟ
