The hulls of these boats were made of 4 layers of Kevlar with a foam core weighting in at 690 lbs hull & deck 350 lbs.

This not to say that you need less materals more that some of the exotic materials they cost more have advantages in the long run material such as carbon fibre Kevlar the salt fibre is class glass and cord laminates.

A blast from our past projects, Steinlager 1 and Sir Peter Blake take line honours in the Bicentennial Two-Handed Around Australia race.
Steinlager 1 was a high-tech trimaran nick named ‘Big Red’ that was fast enough to tow a water skier and cleaned up the round Australia race with a five-day margin.
The technology we used in this project was "Per-preg" that is per impregnated carbon fibre and cooked in a massive oven to melt the fibres and resin together. Today this method is still used even in Aerospace. RIP JD John Douglas you rocked!

Gel Coat Cracking
Hairline cracks in exterior gel coat surfaces are traditionally treated as a cosmetic problem. However, barring some deficiency in manufacturing, such as thickness gauging, catalyzation or mould release technique, gel coat cracks often are the result of design inadequacies and can lead to further deterioration of the laminate. Gel coat formulations represent a fine balance between high gloss properties and material
toughness. Designers must be constantly aware that the gel coat layer is not reinforced, yet it can experience the highest strain of the entire laminate because it is the farthest away from the
neutral axis.
