Unnishe May’ or May 19 has been frozen in the calendar for the residents of Barak Valley. The Bengali Language Movement also called ‘Bhasha Shahid Divas’ was a protest movement against Assam government’s decision to hail Assamese as the only official language of the state. On that day, in the year 1961, 11 persons were shot dead by the State police, as they protested against it. The gory incident took place at Silchar railway station, Tarapur. These 11 martyrs also include a woman who was shot with a bullet that pierced her eye and entered into the head. On turning the pages of Barak Valley’s history, it can be found that many people have sacrificed their lives for the sake of protecting Bengali language.

অস্বাভাবিক বিদ্যুৎ বিল ও প্রিপেইড স্মার্ট মিটার বাতিলের দাবিতে সাড়া আসাম বিদ্যুৎ গ্রাহক সমিতির আহ্বানে আজকের এই প্রতিবাদী মিছিল শহরের শহীদ ক্ষুদিরাম মুর্তির পাদদেশ থেকে শহরের প্রধান সড়ক পরিক্রমা করে কাছাড়ের মাননীয় জিলাধিপতি মহোদয়ের কার্যালয়ের সম্মুখে ধর্না কার্যসূচি পালন করে। অতঃপর কাছাড়ের জিলাধিপতির মাধ্যমে আসামের মাননীয় মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মহাশয়ের উদ্দেশ্যে একখানা স্মারক পত্র প্রেরণ করা হয়।উক্ত কার্যসূচি তে শহরের বিভিন্ন অরাজনৈতিক সংগঠনের নেতৃবৃন্দ উপস্থিত ছিলেন। কিন্তু অত্যন্ত পরিতাপের বিষয় সম্পুর্ন অরাজনৈতিক ভাবে একটি নায্য দাবিতে সম্মিলিত আন্দোলন কে প্রতিহত করতে পুলিশ প্রসাশন বাধা প্রদান করে। কোনো মহিলা পুলিশ কর্মী ছাড়া মিছিলের অগ্রভাগে থাকা মহিলাদেরকে বাধা প্রদান করা হয়, যাহা যথেষ্ট নিন্দনীয়, ক্ষমতার নেশায় বিভোর শাসকদল গনতান্ত্রিক আন্দোলন ও জনগণের কন্ঠরুদ্ধ করার যতই চেষ্টা করুক, কোনো অবস্থায় এই কাজে ওরা সফল হবে না। যতক্ষণ না পর্যন্ত প্রিপেইড স্মার্ট মিটার ব্যবস্থা সরকার পরিবর্তন করবে, ততক্ষণ পর্যন্ত ধাপে ধাপে গনতান্ত্রিক এই প্রতিবাদ চলবে।

Manmath Nath Gupta (7 February 1908 – 26 October 2000) was an Indian Marxistrevolutionary writer and author of autobiographical, historical and fictional books in Hindi, English and Bengali. He joined the Indian independence movement at the age of 13 and was an active member of the Hindustan Republican Association. He participated in the famous Kakori train robbery in 1925 and was imprisoned for 14 years. On release from jail in 1937, he started writing against the British government. He was sentenced again in 1939 and was released in 1946 just a year before India's independence in 1947. He has written several books on the history of the Indian struggle for independence from a revolutionary's point of view, including They Lived Dangerously – Reminiscences of a Revolutionary. He was also the editor of the Hindi literary magazine Aajkal.
