Acts 20;24

But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

Good morning, All.

1 Samuel 30:22-24 22But all the evil men and troublemakers among David's followers said, "Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go." 23David replied, "No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the LORD has given us. He has protected us and handed over to us the forces that came against us. 24Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike."

David and his men returned from a predicament of marching with the Philistines against Judah. The commanders of the Philistines feared David would turn on them so they sent them back before the battle began. Delivered from that situation, they came home to find their city burned and their families taken captive. David didn't act without consulting the LORD. The LORD sent him against the Amalekites that had burned their city. It is interesting that Saul lost the kingdom over sparing the Amalekite king, while David is about to come into power after a battle with them.

They had marched so long that one-third of David's men could not go on. Two-thirds marched on and fought for 24 straight hours, recapturing everything and taking a huge amount of spoil. On returning to the others, some did not want to share the spoils of war. David had the right perspective. He insisted the victory was from God and so all had a right to the spoils. Those who stayed behind and took care of their home are as deserving as those who went into battle.

Some people think that missionaries and pastors will have all the heavenly rewards. They would not be where they are without the prayer and financial support of those who stay behind. The spoils will be shared by all. Even the angels in heaven rejoice over every soul that comes into the Kingdom.

Consider: We are in this together regardless of our part. Am I doing my part?

Psalm 71:1-6 (UMH794) Read Responsively,
Jeremiah 1:4-10, Hebrews 12:18-29, Luke 13:10-17

From Matthew 18:1-4 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Let us pray: Dear God, this morning, help us to know, we are “children of God”. I pray Lord that you will open our ears and make our hearts eager to receive your message, so that we can honor you, in all we may do in response to Your Word. In Jesus name, Amen.

I’m “hung up”, as it were, on a theme… For some reason, perhaps
because I am sensing that I am getting older…
Maybe that happens more so, every time I see Jasper, getting bigger.
Maybe especially since Gramma passed at 105.
I’ve been pondering more so, the concept of
how long God has known us or
how long has God known you or me?...
If we recall our own youth… We all might have similar answers to this other question…. Let me ask…. How long, have you known God…
I recently read an excerpt from Billy Graham’s autobiography in which he told about his decision for Christ. There was an evangelist preaching a revival in Charlotte, NC and Billy Graham wrote that he had refused to attend the meetings, for over a month, before he finally went to one. He wound up attending every night after that, for weeks. He tells then of his experience over those weeks that he attended the revival and the night on which he made his decision for Christ. He said of that experience that what was really happening during that time, was “the miserable realization that I did not know Jesus Christ for myself.”
Rev. Billy Graham died at the age of 99 years. I heard one of his sons state that his dad had always said he would live until he was 100, and that since he had lived to within 9 months of his 100th birthday, and believing that life begins at conception, that Billy Graham had lived, 100 years.

What is your first memory? How far back do you remember?

I’m so over joyed that one of my very first memories was of one occasion when I was at a church, with my grandfather…… We were not there for a worship service, but as I recall it, I was with him, when he had to go into the church, for something…… I remember the sanctuary was not much different than this one. That’s all I got, but for some reason, I have that one memory, from way back. I was adopted at 5 and was in foster care for at least a year before that, so I reckon that memory of being at a church with my grandfather was from maybe age 3 or so. I don’t remember a Bible, or a church service, or any thought or conversation about God. I don’t even recall a supper table blessing, until after I was adopted and came to live with my adoptive parents at age 5.
If you can, think back to your earliest memories… What was your first memory?
Now, perhaps a little later on in your memory bank…. What was your first memory of knowing about God? When do you remember first knowing about God?
I’ve no doubt Billy Graham, and all of us, knew about God early on. Probably most of us, like Billy Graham, attended church and Sunday school and had been taught about God, maybe around 5 or 6. Now… When did you first become aware of Jesus? When did you first become aware of Jesus’ love for you?
I have a vivid memory of my early childhood years. Some of my first memories of church were of Pastor Ken Terrell playing his guitar and singing with us in Sunday school. Among other songs, I remember singing, Jesus Love Me.
I was very young, maybe 5 or 6, but I remember singing, Jesus Loves Me.

In May of 1980, I was “confirmed”… at 10 years old. I remember that day. And I remember years of Sunday school and church, leading up to that day… I remember scripture reading, and singing hymns, and listening to sermons preached by a very young red headed Ken Terrell. And I know, that I knew about God, at that time. And I know that by the time I was “confirmed” and baptized, I knew then, that I did know God.
But today I’m asking…. how long has God known me? How long, has God known you?
From our Responsive Reading from Psalm 71:5-6
5 For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth.
6 Upon you I have leaned from before my birth;
you are he who took me from my mother's womb.
My praise is continually of you.

Now I have pretty much just given you testimony as to verse 5, 5 For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth. I have trusted in the Lord, since I was very young…
I made a profession of my faith in the Lord, when I was 10 years old.
But what do you think about verse 6:? 6 Upon you I have leaned from before my birth;
Is that the case for you? Are you, like the Psalmist? Are you one who has leaned upon the Lord, from before your birth?...
I ask the question of you, today…
I submit to you, it takes a great deal of self-awareness to properly answer the question, and I am certain of my answer… regarding the question of verse 6. I don’t remember it. I can’t remember my own birth, and I assuredly cannot recall from before my birth, but I am no less certain of my answer, how about you? Have you, leaned on Him, since before your own birth? We call it prevenient grace. Which is defined as a Christian theological concept of theology stating that divine grace precedes human decisions. God knows you, Jesus loves you, even before you were capable of knowing Him.
5 For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth.
6 Upon you I have leaned from before my birth;
you are he who took me from my mother's womb.
My praise is continually of you.
---------------
We read earlier from Jeremiah 1:4-5
4 Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
This is what God told the prophet Jeremiah… God told Jeremiah that: 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you;
How long have you known God?..... When did you recognize you needed God? When did you come to God?... When did you accept Jesus and ask Him to come into your heart to be your Lord and Savior? How long has God known you?
Whether young or old, what matters is that you do come to know and accept Jesus, for He has know you and me, for a very long time.
I’ll close with this from Psalm 139:13-16
13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.

Sermon: August 7th, 2022 MPUMC Rev. Paul Bennett

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Verse 2 of our reading from Hebrews 11 declares: For by it the people of old received their commendation. What does that mean? What even is, “it”? Well, “it” it faith. This statement in verse 2 is not just a “one off” reference in Hebrews, but rather this is a recurring theme in the Book of Hebrews that God had always intended to replace the old covenant with the new covenant. Hebrews 8:6-7, for instance: 6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. I caution us to not read this as if there was fault on God’s part. It was Adam and Eve who started us off on the wrong foot, and throughout the Old Testament, even after the Mosaic Law, and through all the deliverances, God’s people continued to sin. Oh but how they adhered to the law, with their burnt offerings and blood sacrifices… True, complete, and unwavering faith in the one and only true God, that is “it”, and only by “it”, faith, did the people of old receive their commendation.
Likewise from Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. I thought of this yesterday, as Jasper was eating his sausage gravy and biscuits, and he said and kept sayin, Ummm, So Good. And so, Hebrews 11 verse 3 reminds us: By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
I remind you again, Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Genesis 12:1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” Our reading this morning from Hebrews 11 verse 8 echoes this call from God to Abram: 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. The scripture tells us, Abram had no idea where it was, God was sending him… But he went by faith…
9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
Again, Abram went by faith, and again I remind us: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
In Genesis 15, God reminds Abram of the covenant God had made with Abram. After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” Abram questions the Lord, since in his advanced years, he remained childless. In Genesis 18 … appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day…. There the Lord’s promise to give Sarah a child… Overhearing these words Sarah laughed… And today we read in Hebrews 11:11-12: 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore. The Lord had kept His promise in that covenant he had made with Abram, so may years before, and Abram would father nations, his offspring outnumbering the stars.
I remind you again, Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
This too, is our promise… The promise makes us, as he made it to Abram. And so we receive example of how we should live here, like Abram we travel here on this earth as a sojourner, not on land of our own, but as an exile traveling in a land of strangers. We are here only temporarily. The land and the life eternal that is promised to us. Have faith in God, because faith in God is: the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Amen.

Good morning, All. I pray you are well and are able to attend the 11 o'clock worship service and are planning to bring a dish and enjoy a time of fun, food, and fellowship at our Fifth Sunday Potluck Luncheon, at Noon. I look forward to seeing you this morning at Mt. Pleasant

Sermon: July 31st, 2022 MPUMC Rev. Paul Bennett

Again, we heard today, the cold hard truth, from the prophet Hosea. We even marveled a bit over it at Bible study, last Wednesday night. The hard truth is that the people of Israel, despite being nurtured and shepherded by God, all the days of their existence, continually return to the worldly ways, as those who’s gains, were seemingly, all of their own doing.
Prideful and obstinate, sacrificing to the Baals and offering sacrifices to their idols. God’s people, the Israelites, either ignorant or ambivalent, refused to look to the hills, from whence came their help. Rather, they looked to themselves and the local gods, whose more tangible presence, apparently more often give them, explanation, for any good fortune.
“God’s people”. In today’s text from Hosea, the Israelites or Ephraim, are compared to a toddler whom, God Himself, taking them up by their arms, taught them to walk. Oblivious that it was God Himself, who healed them - God Himself, who led them with cords of kindness and bands of love.
The hard, hard truth: God’s people would never see Egypt again and the sword shall rage against their cities….WHY?
God said: Because they have refused to return to me. The sword shall rage against their cities…..
And this line from verse 7: “My people are bent on turning away from me”---
-----There are those who say, the Old Testament is irrelevant. Well, if by irrelevant, they mean the Old Testament ways of bring forth burnt offerings and blood sacrifices, sell, I agree, we no longer have need for blood sacrifices to atone for sin. Jesus, the blood of the New Covenant, is the sacrifice in atonement for All the sin of the world, even mine and even yours…
Jesus Christ, gave His life on the cross, spilling His blood, for the sins of ALL. Past, Present and Future… And haunting as the words sound, I cannot dismiss the words of Hosea.
Old Testament words.…. IRRELAVENT? No, I don’t think so.
The words of God, presented by the prophet Hosea, “My people are bent on turning away from me…” Those words are as relevant to God’s people, followers of Christ today, as they were a warning to God’s people “Before Christ”. In those earlyier verses, we should not separate ourselves so far from the Israelites who were mentioned, but rather we should include ourselves as God’s people.
We watch the news, we sit in our churches and spend years debating Biblical truths from two thousand years ago… No, I think as worldly a human race, as we are today, I cannot say we as modern day humans, are much different that the Israelites. I can see little evidence that we are anything but a people, bent on turning away from God. -----------------
In Hosea, we read the foretelling of the harsh justice that is deserved, for the unfaithfulness of the people of Israel. We read of God’s dissatisfaction with His people. Are we so different, today?
In text from Colossians, we read an admonition, for those of the early church to guard themselves against falling back into the ways of the profane world. The letter compares those early followers of the teachings of Christ, not as the wee toddler that God raised up by the arms and taught to walk, but as those of a few year on, those of an age of accountability, having made for themselves, the decision to believe in redemption through Christ Jesus. Are we any different them? This letter reminds not only the Church of Colossae, but us, that through our salvation in Christ, they/WE have been raised with Christ. (This is still the message we tell people today, when they are baptized. Plunging under the water is symbolic of dying to one’s self, burying their sinful ways under the water, in fact drowning those sins, and rising from the water,
being born again,
washed clean from our sins,
rising renewed, with Christ.
Raised, with and in Christ.
We heard this admonition in Chapter 3, Verse one: If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
When we died unto ourselves, when we were plunged beneath the waters, we were to have left our old selves there, buried in the deep. When we rose, fresh and renewed in Christ, as we are now, we are to now set our eyes on things eternal, not on the things of this world.
The Apostle Paul explain in verse 4, the endgame as he wrote: When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory…. That is the prize for which we live, is it not?
Verse 5 lists examples of the earthly things that are still in us, that we much put to death: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness…. This letter to the Colossians pronounces these things as idolatry.
Perhaps you can relate? Maybe you do not personally relate to all the things in this list??? Maybe however you can relate to other things in your life that separate you from the Path leads to sanctification. Whichever is the case for us, we can probably all benefit from making close examination of our lives to find some things, or some practices, that for us, are the things of idolatry.
Verse 8-10 said: But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
Put on the new self: put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
I think we sometimes fall into the trap of thinking this is the talk of those who are at that stage of preparing to be baptized. As though this dying to one’s self is something that happens only that one time. But I tell you no. Surely as we rise each day and get dressed each day, we must also start each day with repentance and once again, put on the new self. : put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
----------------------------------
We are God’s people. Let us today, head the words of Hosea and the Apostle Paul.
Let us remember Christ.
Let us remember the “blood sacrifice” that has been shed for the forgiveness of all our sins.
Let us remember, “God’s people” of the Old Testament.
Let us remember our brothers and sisters in Christ, at the church in Colossae.
Let us remember today, that we too, are God’s people.
Let us remember that we have put on the new self and let us be renewed in the knowledge that we are made in the image of God.
Amen.
