Vintage.Printage
Vintage.Printage sells authentic, original print advertising from American Magazines circa 1930-1970.
I love days where we get to keep magazines in circulation in some form and today was no exception. I drove an hour to pick up these magazines as someone cleaned out their storage and we’re ready to let them go. There are a couple of Elvis Presley covers as well as an O.J. Simpson and many other great magazines with amazing ads going all the way back to the 1920s. I can’t wait to dig in and see what we can share.
This Saturday Feliz Flea prepare to be blown away!!! On the rooftop of we will open the most epic Stone Stash in .printage history just in time for FAThER’s DAY. So be a good one and make happy or just come shop for yourself! Framed, ready to go…Leave the lame gifts to the other kids because all the cool kids are shopping open 11am - 5pm, free parking, free admission and your pups and pets and families are WELCOME! Get there early!!!
Every weekend driving to and from LA I see people driving insanely fast 💨 n the freeway, people running red lights and people just not paying attention to the road. I’ve cultivated a habit of waiting a few seconds before going when a light turns green because of the number of people I see running reds. Tonight that few seconds made a difference as a horrific accident happened right in front of me when a speeding driver in a 25mph intersection ran a red light and smashed a lady’s car before losing control and rolling his van. He got out and tried to take off but the response time from was lightning quick. I never knew that the guys from had to sweep all of the debris out of the road while also dealing with gasoline and other fluids in the street. RFD paramedics were quick, everyone was organized and professional. There is NOTHING as important as being able to arrive where you are going in one piece with no guilt or damage. It’s okay to slow down. It’s okay to wait at the light. It’s okay to avoid sending elderly women off in an ambulance. Be smart. Be safe. Slow down.
Check out the art of Brazilian artist who specializes in lovely girl love. Her work is sweet and her artistry is phenomenal. Best part: she ships!
Summer is here and Dotty is loaded with thousands of original vintage pages from 20th century American magazines. Stop by to get the perfect thing for Father’s Day and remember that of our $10 ads can be framed on the spot and taken home for just $30! Of course, during the month of pride we’ve expanded our selection of original JC Leyendecker magazine covers. These historic artifacts are one of many tragic stories of gay art erasure and we love to share the tale. Saturdays you will find us in our permanent spot on the roof overlooking the Los Angeles downtown skyline. Remember that at Los Feliz Flea there’s free parking free admission and your fur friends are welcome as our children . Sundays we are somewhere and will try to update you on our location before each weekend, admission is six dollars and there’s parking throughout the neighborhood or you can use their valet service.
A little night work on #2….none of this will be visible later but this evening the top was stabilized after extraneous metal was removed from the top of the posts that life the roof up. All of the bolts were tightened and extra bits of metal and screws were removed. Later this ugly ceiling will be covered with a fabric photo backdrop of fluffy white clouds against a blue sky. The list was made for the hardware store and I submitted a request for an estimate from the talented .sign.painting to have the custom lettering where we would normally hang banners. We’re getting there!
Gutted! What a great day of work getting Dotty2 gutted and cleaned out. We removed the old deteriorating tent fabric, pulled the appliances and removed all of the infrastructure holding everything in. There were two layers of flooring that had to be scraped up and so much garbage! Afterwards we hosed it out and let it dry. Next steps will be determining the type of flooring to install (linoleum, vinyl, liquid rubber???) and reworking the slides to see if they are useable. We’ve ordered the fabric and upholstery pins for the ceiling and it, just like original Dotty, will be a sky of fluffy white clouds. Next update will be after the long weekend! Thanks for coming along as we expand so that Dotty can start her residency for 🙃
Progress isn’t always pretty! Each year we set a goal for Vintage Printage and this year’s goal has been EXPANSION! It may not look like it now but this junked out trailer is key to that expansion. Right now it looks terrible but follow along as this caterpillar transforms into our next Dotty! Our original Dotty trailer will begin her ‘residency’ for when Dotty2 is completed. Our new Dotty is about one foot shorter and will include some mods learned from taking Dotty on the road the last two years. We look forward to the challenge and eventually being for all of their events!
Adventures in vending episode 1,342,067…”Le Ouch”
Being a market vendor definitely has some interesting moments, especially when you are in a cute but nontraditional booth. This weekend was a new one for me. I made it through the day with no issues and was nearly ready to hitch up Dotty and drag her 2.5 hours home when I took an unexpected tumble.
The physics of working with almost one ton of trailer on three wheels allow it to be moved by hand. I frequently turn Dotty 180 degrees or move her several feet pushing from behind or pulling from the chains on her hitch. This was no exception. Until… I was on a very slight incline and the ground was made of small hexagonal pavers. Somehow my foot caught one just right and I stumbled, falling backwards and landing on my left hip, knee, foot and hand as the nearly 2,000 pounds of trailer was rolling towards me! I threw up my right foot and caught it, twisting my back and exerting good force to keep it all together.
In the moment my pride was hurt the worst. A few helpful folks jumped to help me up but I needed a minute to collect myself. Eventually I got up and got hitched and left the venue. I made a stop at Target for instant ice packs, chemical heat packs and Ibuprofen, knowing the drive home with a standard transmission, pulling a trailer, in busy weekend traffic was going to hurt.
We cannot plan for these moments. I am so thankful it wasn’t my head. I went for a massage today and popped into urgent care. I have X-rays scheduled for the morning and will take it easy this week as I power up for this weekend.
When you see these market vendors with amazing setups full of a curated collection of fascinating things understand that some literally have skin in the game. And blood. Lots of sweat. Tears. But also passion, hope, and a true desire to connect in a conscious way with other human beings. We love what we do and even the days that knock you on your ass working for yourself are better than any day working for an impersonal corporation that grinds you down to oil the machine.
So, thank you to everyone who bought from me this weekend and thanks to for the great therapeutic massage!

If you build it….and is building something very special …
Building something up is never easy, in January Los Feliz Flea moved from Los Feliz to a new location in Echo Park. This location is a 3 story parking garage with a rooftop overlooking downtown Los Angeles. Four months in, it feels like we are starting to hit our stride.
Saturday Dotty, our vintage polka dotted pop up peddler, will be on the roof with a view at Vintageland for Los Feliz Flea. We will be loaded with thousands of original 20th Century American magazines ads, covers and pages. In addition we bring first edition 1940’s Varga pinups and framed first edition JC Leyendecker magazine covers. Our stock changes regularly as we add to Dotty’s inventory.
If you have not been to see us at Vintageland, come see what we are building: a rooftop flea market with great food vendors, a full bar, hundreds of creatively curated vendors and a community of people who support one another and their customers. Free admission. Free parking. Kid friendly. Pet friendly.
Depictions of people of color in magazines from America in the 20th century convey the historical systemic racism that made many American families wealthy on lives that had been enslaved and mistreated. There is a lot of content we do not choose to profit from at Vintage Printage. We do not ever intentionally include advertisements or magazine covers that demean, degrade or subjugate people of color. It does not feel good or right to profit from a system that hurt so many for so long. We intentionally seek out positive representation to include when we take out Dotty with our mobile archive of curated original magazine ads and pages. A conversation last weekend with a customer has got us thinking. The customer asked, Where is your black section?” I told her we have content all throughout the collection and don’t segregate. After about 20 minutes of talking I came to agree that we should have a specific section for our customers of color. They should not have to look through thousands of pages to find the hundreds of pages specifically geared towards them. Media has traditionally offered a small sliver of content specifically for people of color in a much larger pie geared toward others and my current organization is doing much the same. So over the next few weeks we will be reorganizing our mobile archive and adding a section titled “Say It Loud” to celebrate positive representation for our customers of color.
The picture accompanying this post is a magnificent magazine cover by illustrator JC Leyendecker from 1935. In most Leyendecker works, people of color are in service roles: maids, cooks, porters, landscapers. This depiction of a man hitchhiking his way to New York shows the man on his own, with a huge smile. He is traveling. Leyendecker gave us a happy man in a time when people of color were often depicted in violent rages or as caricatures of tropes seeking to subjugate. While none of us alive today created that system, it is right to recognize that it existed. At some point we will have an exhibition and conversation series with the content we refuse to sell to examine how media is complicit in systemic issues.
A first! More than a hundred original JC Leyendecker magazines covers have passed through our archive and we have not been tempted to keep one…. UNTIL we saw this one. In many human cultures, cows symbolize fertility, generosity, motherhood, the origins of life, and they’re related to serenity. This elegant woman with her beautiful, healthy cows wreathed in nourishing vegetables just had to stay. Was Leyendecker speaking to virtuous motherhood and abundant nourishment in this Thanksgiving cover? Perhaps. This is what Leyendecker does best, he evokes emotions and connections for people. There is something romantic, elegant, beautiful and special about his work. When you find us on a Saturday or on a Sunday we always have a curated selection of original magazine covers illustrated by the incomparable JC Leyendecker. Come find one that speaks to your imagination.
Dana Point knows how to throw a party! Join us Sunday April 28th for 🏄♀️ If you have never been, imagine a cool beach town rolling out a vintage red carpet for a curated selection of vintage and eclectic vendors then pair that with great food and the most amazing g local residents strolling and shopping. It is truly a one of a kind day. Part party, part sunshine and all fun. Dotty, our polka dotted pop up peddler, will be loaded with original 20th Century magazine ads, covers and WWII pinups. We will bring a glorious handful of original JC Leyendecker magazine covers and framing will be available on the spot for most items. See you there!
You may notice we share a lot about in their new location on the rooftop of a three story parking garage near the 101/110 intersection with an unbelievable view of downtown Los Angeles. There’s a reason we go to this market so often and we love to share. That reason is the culture they create. The people who run the market actually care about their vendors and their customers. They work hard to curate a market, where everyone is welcome, and can find something to be passionate about. The vendors aren’t just vendors, they are artists and curators and stylists and designers. They all have something special to share. We get up very early in the morning to be there so that at 11 o’clock when we open there’s something magnificent for you, as a customer, to experience. Admission is free, parking is free, families are welcome, and you can even bring your pets. Los Feliz Flea will make you feel the creative heartbeat of Los Angeles in a way that inspires you to dream and dance. Stop by, say hi and unless it is raining we are ALWAYS in the same spot - part of your fantastic LA skyline on the roof.
On Sundays we are typically at the corner of Melrose and Fairfax in West Hollywood (Fairfax HS). The market is ever evolving and has recently changed the layout so instead of having a regular space where customers can always count on finding is, we are floating from spot to spot in the market. This week we back up against Melrose and are a few booths down from the Melrose entrance across from the steps leading to the courtyard area. One thing that will never change is that we bring thousands of ORIGINAL 20th Century American magazine ads, covers, pinups and illustrations on our pop up polka dotted peddler, Dotty! We add about a thousand pages each month and we have the largest collection of original, first edition magazine covers and ads illustrated by renowned artist JC Leyendecker. Stop in and browse, we will be there for questions, bad advice and radical honesty…not guaranteed in that order!

What’s the difference? A lot. At Vintage Printage we don’t ‘find’ old paper, we curate ephemeral history.
Take these two framed pieces as an example. They aren’t just old magazine covers. These are illustrated by JC Leyendecker, a man who created the most covers for The Saturday Evening Post of any artist and was later swept under the rug of society, discarded, when it became known that his manager and model Charles Beach was actually his long term lover and partner.
We take the time to know and tell the stories of what we bring to market. To connect you to the history you hold when you purchase these relics. We believe stories connect present culture to the roots that allow it to flourish.
We never presume our style of framing or display is the end result for the piece. Sourcing vintage and antique frames that complement these old magazine covers is a fun side quest but we do not permanently adhere this paper. We use temporary adhesive that can be removed so that our customers can select the matte that best matches their aesthetic. Our job is to preserve the paper and show its possibilities as a piece of historical ephemera- we leave design decisions up to you. Do our styles match sometimes to your advantage? Yes, delightfully so.
Pairing these original pieces of magazine ephemera with repurposed vintage and antique frames seems appropriate. Allowing you space for your own design choices seems respectful. Curating a collection of original magazine ads and covers is our passion and a true joy. Stop by and see us on the rooftop overlooking downtown L.A. Saturday and we’ll tell you all about it!

Dotty is a workhorse. Those of us who tow a vintage trailer around to markets (I’m looking at you oh Queen ) know the never ending maintenance that goes into keeping these babies safely on the road. Dotty has been a trooper but Sunday night coming home from I made it to downtown in the rain with no issue then started hearing a metal scraping noise. Cars beside me started honking and signaling that I had a problem so I pulled off the freeway in a pretty sketchy area of downtown to see what was up.
The leg at the back of the trailer had come down on the freeway, dragging on the asphalt and likely scaring people around me. I tried to get it to go back up but it was bent about 60 degrees in the wrong direction and the inner portion would not retract. It was also wedged into the ground. I consulted my favorite mechanic and went to work. I unhitched Dotty and cranked the front end as low as she could go and was about to disengage the foot from the ground. I pushed the leg about halfway in but it wouldn’t go further. So here I am lying on the ground under the trailer in a sketchy area of downtown with a large wrench banging on the metal to try to get it to bend back into shape. The angle was all wrong for that kind of force. I ended up securing the leg in the up position with a bungee and some para-cord holding it in place for the drive home.
We made it and it kept raining for the next two days but tonight there was no rain. My favorite mechanic crawled under there in the dark and discovered that one of the two nuts holding the leg had come off and caused the leg to fall. So the leg was removed and being a good mechanic who never gets rid of anything, he just happened to have a brand new leg put in the shop. And, in the dark on the cold ground he installed the new leg and Dotty is ready to roll. Shout out to Dotty and my favorite mechanic.

Sharing history and culture through the preservation of vintage and antique paper ephemera is not a job. It is a true passion. When we encounter a pristine original American magazine from 1934 like these Saturday Evening Post pages we cannot help but marvel at how much of a story they tell and be amazed at the beauty of the 90 year old pages.
We love to connect with you through the in person, tactile, community experience of exploring our curated selection and of over 5,000 original magazine pages. Huddle up kids…. It’s story time. A scholarly man passed away and his family flew in from the east coast to manage his estate. Their flight leaves today and they still had a garage full of books and magazines to manage. I was able to stop by and pick up a good load of science and nature magazines, Arizona Highways - featuring indigenous people of the Southwestern US and more. They were able to take o e more thing off their to do list. I even stayed a while and helped them box up some books that are being donated to the man’s university. What a cool experience to explore this man’s collection and talk with his people. I think he must have been a great conversationalist.
Let us know if you have magazines that will go to waste. We don’t mind taking a drive and doing a little work to get them out of the way.
Forgive the glare but n the glass and the dubious lighting 😬 these are still exquisite Leyendeckers.
Illustrator JC Leyendecker pulled the most beautiful images from canvas in his brilliant early 20th century oil paintings that became covers for the Saturday Evening Post. These Original Saturday Evening Post Magazine covers are fanciful romanticism, playful political observation and evocative masculinity indicative of Leyendecker’s best works. Leyendecker created 322 covers for the the Saturday Evening Post, dozens for other magazines, mentored Norman Rockwell and created the style and culture of the Roaring 20’s in NYC and all of America with this iconic work. If you have never heard of him before, it is likely because in the mid 40s, the Post fired him after discovering that he was a gay man. His work is considered to be a love letter to the gay community, and he’s considered to be one of the first subversive gay artists in American magazine history. Much of his work has been lost to time and the destruction of narrowminded people. We specialize in curating a collection of his work. We believe that a Leyendecker on your wall is like a Rolex on your wrist. When you’re ready to gift yourself or someone else one of these incredible pieces, please come see us and find an original, framed JC Leyendecker magazine cover at our booth. This Saturday these two additions to our Leyendecker collection will be available this Saturday in their new location
