Oxidation, free radicals and antioxidants - how are they connected?? 🤔🌈

Oxidation is a normal and necessary process that takes place in your body. Oxidative stress, on the other hand, occurs when there’s an imbalance between free radical activity and antioxidant activity. When functioning properly, free radicals can help fight off pathogens. Pathogens lead to infections.

When there are more free radicals present than can be kept in balance by antioxidants, the free radicals can start doing damage to fatty tissue, DNA, and proteins in your body. Proteins, lipids, and DNA make up a large part of your body, so that damage can lead to a vast number of diseases over time. These include:

Vitamin D (ergocalciferol-D2, cholecalciferol-D3, alfacalcidol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Having the right amount of vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus is important for building and keeping strong bones.

D3 is more efficient than D2. You get vitamin D from food, supplements, and sunshine. Vitamin D is important for bone and muscle strength and immune function. It may help prevent depression, inflammatory disease, and heart disorders.

Getting a little sunlight every day can help you maintain your D3 levels. But it's not the safest or most reliable way to stay healthy. If you don’t get much sun, use sunscreen regularly, or have darker skin, you likely won’t meet your vitamin D needs from the sun.
