SPL October Conversation in Leadership: Psychologists as Leaders : Why the Reluctance, has been postponed to a new date and time. We will send out details as soon as we get them. Please make note of this and we hope to see you at the rescheduled date and time.

Presented by:
Thuy Boardman, PhD, MPH
Boardman Consulting LLC

The American Psychological Association's Future of Work initiative identified three domains where psychologists can impact the workplace: psychological well-being, human-technology interaction, workforce readiness. Psychologists are uniquely skilled as subject matter experts in these domains and may likely be asked to take on informal leadership and consulting roles to support initiatives in these areas or other similar work. And yet, there remains hesitancy and/or reluctance to take on formal leadership roles beyond their primary psychology role. This presentation will examine the challenges, assumptions, and ethical considerations that psychologists face when deciding whether to pursue formal leadership opportunities and explore strategies to engage and support psychologists pursuing formal leadership positions in their organizations.

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
*Describe the unique competencies and training/experience gaps for psychologists considering formal leadership roles.
*Identify key ethical considerations for psychologists considering formal leadership roles.
*Discuss strategies to engage and support psychologists considering formal leadership roles.

This session will be available for 1.5 CE credits for $30.00 or it is free to attend with no CE credits offered.

Please feel free to reach out to [email protected] for any questions.

We look forward to seeing you there at the new date and time, TBD.

“Finding the truth requires three simple questions, and they must be answered in any investigation: 1) What is the problem? 2) Why is it a problem 3) How do you solve it?”

SPL September Conversation in Leadership: Chrono-Leadership: From Time Constraints to Catalysts for Progress

Presented by: Maryanne L. Fisher, PhD, Professor, Saint Mary's University

Leadership involves a significant time commitment, whether personal and community-based or professional. Here, Maryanne will discuss the benefits of rebalancing leadership goals, which is necessary when life circumstances change and lead to a lack or surplus of available time. Maryanne will focus on the Eisenhower Matrix of urgent versus important and different ways that this framing can effectively guide personal decision-making around leadership involvement, particularly when there is a time crunch. The constraints around community and professional leadership will be discussed to acknowledge how these constraints shape our decision-making. The examples of professional leadership via mentoring will be used throughout, as will working with a local Parent-Teacher Association.

A core tenet to the SPL culture is creating a community of camaraderie where members share content and experiences that help educate and empower each other to be impactful and effective leaders, coaches or consultants. Together, we all benefit from recognizing, celebrating and learning from the shared experiences of our fellow members.

This month, we are pleased to introduce George Watts, PhD, Chairman of TLT Coaching.

How does psychology inform your leadership?
As Chairman of TLT Coaching, a leadership and executive coaching firm, I hold meaningful and authentic conversations every day; my doctorate in psychology laid the foundation of how to hold these purposeful discussions. Deep listening, sagacious questions, and astute summarizing leads to unique going forward strategies. I lead team discussions that allow people to speak openly and authentically without fear of being judged. This bonds people, improves employee engagement, and builds an energized and cohesive culture. The field of psychology has also given me a distinctive advantage around talent management. I experienced much success as a “C” level executive in global firms. Now, as Chairman of TLT Coaching, our company has ascended to the top echelon of coaches because we offer wise counsel buttressed by applied behavioral science. Looking back, psychology provided me with a wonderful career and a competitive edge as a leader.

What motivated you to become a member of SPL?
When I decided to go into IO psychology, I originally joined Division 14. When a large client offered me a global EVP role, I went from a consultant to an executive leading hundreds of people. I understood that I needed wisdom, not knowledge. After searching, I came across SPIM and contacted a professional named Dr. Arthur Freedman. He was generous with his time; our first conversation was 90 minutes. I decided that an organization offering this level of personal relationships, collegiality, and dialogue was the society for me. Over 20 years later I can now say that SPL helped me achieve career success that I dreamed of years ago. I have never missed an annual conference!

With what other organizations do you spend your time?
SPL is my primary professional organization. I live in Chicago where the most prestigious and exclusive business organization is the Economic Club of Chicago (ECC). Founded in 1927, the ECC offers meaningful connections among Chicago leaders to encourage dialogue on important economic and social issues. CEOs of multi-million-dollar companies and elite professionals are invited to join after an in-depth and intense vetting process. I’ve been an active member for over 20 years. After almost 100 years, I am the only APA member ever invited to join the ECC.

Together, we all benefit from recognizing, celebrating and learning from the shared experiences of our fellow members.

This month, we are pleased to introduce Mira Branch.

How does psychology inform your leadership?
I started moving into management and leadership roles very early in my career - within 5 months of graduating and starting my first job as a psychologist. People asked me, "Are you sure you don't want to be a psychologist anymore? Don't you miss the clinical work?" I told them I use the same skills every day as a manager and leader. Leadership requires a high degree of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, self-regulation, interpersonal savvy, and ability to assess and navigate highly complex systems and situations. I can't imagine a better skill set to prepare me for the complexity of what leadership requires.

What motivated you to become a member of SPL?
Initially it was honestly because a colleague and mentor, John Reed, who is a member, put me up for the Early Career Woman Psychologist in Management award. He also believed this would be a good professional home for me. When I got the award and attended for my first time in 2019, what I found was a professional home that was (a) intimate enough to make real, meaningful connections, (b) people who inspired me to be better, (c) seasoned professionals with significant experience and knowledge, (d) a supportive, welcoming environment, (e) fantastic, meaningful, thoughtful conference sessions, and (e) psychologists who had a unique understanding of entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship, and broad systems thinking, like me!

With what other organizations do you spend your time?
SCP [Society of Consulting Psychology, APA Division 13]. I have tried many other ones but none quite meet the same caliber.
