Descriptions of climate change in everyday language by those navigating it daily through their livelihoods give insights about what adaption and mitigation should be about. This story brings such insights from villages in the Himalayan foothills in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

Thanks to for support for this story.

As school students strike for climate once more, here's how the movement and its tactics have changed 16/11/2023

November is a very busy month for climate justice activism in Australia. Glad to be in this Conversation Article along with Dr Eve Mayes from the Striking Voices project. It is an explainer of the climate justice activism space in Australia that is youth driven and highly diverse. Kudus to all the work, past, present and upcoming, by young people.

Impressive! 43 people have written to Tanya Plibersek so far about putting the climate at the heart of the EPBC Act 🥳🥳🥳

Australia's outdated environmental laws are currently under review, and we are asking the government to put protecting the climate at the heart the Act.

The minister is expected to reveal the details of the proposed reforms in early December, and it is important that she hears that the faith community wants climate to be a key consideration to the EPBC Act reform.

✉️Can you help us get to 60 letters next week? You can send her festive cards - belated Diwali or early Hanukkah and Christmas cards!

Friends of Sapna, can you please share this in your networks? We are looking to recruit young POC co-researchers in Australia who can have conversations on climate change with thier parents/families. Sapna, AYCC and Democracy in Colour are partnering with UNSW for this research. Findings from this research project will help us to shape and guide communications on climate change in multicultural and POC communities in Australia on climate change, in Australia, in a way that makes sense to them. If interested please write to Ruchira@Sapna [email protected]

Excited from the overwhelming response to our combined session at the Climate Action Network Australia conference in Meanjin/Brisbane: All things interconnected-Climate Justice Across the Global North-South divide.

It was great to be to be able to talk about Sapna South Asian Climate Solidarity's work in front of so many very supportive and interested people in the climate movement. And to have an excellent discussion afterwards.

This was our first time at a CANA conference and I am thankful for those who have done the hard work in the lead up to this year's conference to make the space diverse and to have FN-Pasifika-POC leading on many fronts. A lot more to be done, but these are strongly positive beginnings. Diversity and representation matter anyhow, and since we are in this together but not equally, they matter enormously for climate justice.

It was great to talk about climate and energy justice from a global South perspective and for us to together start thinking about intersectionality in global North-South climate justice, at the Rising Tide Newcastle Climate Camp. A big thank you to the organisers for their effort in pulling the Camp together and for giving Sapna a plenary spot.

In the afternoon, at a Sapna workshop on climate justice, we dove into some of the points raised during the morning plenary. 15 keen participants interwove their reflections and we had an honest conversation on the global unevenness of both the climate challenge and moving towards just solutions. Stay tuned for announcements of Sapna workshops on this topic that will run in October.

A huge thanks to Jess Harwood Jess Harwood Art and Illustration for this graphic story that brings the story of justice we tell at Sapna together.

Last month at Climate Camp we were honoured to hear from Dr Ruchira Talukdar, the co-founder of Sapna South Asian Climate Solidarity about the South Asian perspective on climate justice.

Jess Harwood Art and Illustration created this beautiful infographic summarising Ruchira's speech.

The scale of the climate crisis in south Asia is immense and the environmental battles there show us that all energy developments must be undertaken with awareness of the human and ecological impacts. Renewable energy projects can also cause great harm when undertaken without care for justice.

Please follow Sapna South Asian Climate Solidarity to show support for the unique and critical role of the South Asian diaspora in the Australian climate movement.

The Nutmeg’s Curse: Climate, Colonialism and Global Geopolitics 19/04/2023

New York and Goa based author Amitav Ghosh's writings on colonisation, capitalism and climate change need no introduction. The Hungry Tide, The Sea of Poppies and the Ibis Trilogy, the Great Derangement, Gun Island, and his very latest, written during the pandemic, the Nutmeg's Curse, are just some bright examples in his repertoire. His talk at the Climate Change and South Asia Forum organised by the University of Hawaii is being live streamed on Youtube from the UH Better Tomorrow Speaker Series Channel.

The seminar runs over 18th, 19th, and 20th April and many sessions are being streamed. You can catch insightful presentations from writers and artists on the roots and shoots of the climate change challenge in South Asia and responses needed to address the issue across a tremendously diverse social landscape. See the schedule and watch sessions you like: https://manoa.hawaii.edu/.../2023-spring-symposium.../

Last week Sapna joined the National Week of Action alongside to spotlight NAB’s climate hypocrisy and greenwash.

We heard the incredible Lyam deliver a heartfelt speech of the impacts the Mauritius is facing and the need for Australia to step up.

Our wonderful Natasha was an MC, leading the way with chants and energy.

Together we demanded CEO, Ross McEwan to fulfil NAB's own climate promises and stop funding new coal, starting with Whitehaven - a corporation that plans to double coal exports this decade.

This community led, peaceful and fun event will be the culmination of the Week of Action.

What does climate justice actually look like in the Australian climate movement? Sapna South Asian Climate Solidarity's first report (launched yesterday!) gives some recommendations. 📃

Titled ‘Why North South Intersectionality Matters for Climate Activism’, the new report written by Dr Ruchira Talukdar from Sapna is based on interviews with South Asian youth climate activists about their experiences in climate activism and reveals the need for diversity within the climate movement.

Sapna’s report demonstrates how a commitment to justice and diversity within the climate movement is critical. We need to build movements that represent the diversity of Australian society, to ensure all voices are represented in the fight for climate justice. 💥

This report creates opportunities for the Australian climate movement to understand how mainstream movements resonate with POC + to tell more diverse stories / engage more diverse communities. ✊🏽

🔗Read the exclusive report at bit.ly/sapnareport

Today we have released our first big report, based on interviews with 12 South Asian Australian youth activists on their experiences of being involved in activism within the climate movement. The report has been researched and written by Sapna co-founder Dr Ruchira Talukdar.

Critically, our report makes recommendations on how to diversify the climate movement, the people it makes rooms for and the stories it uplifts, to achieve climate justice.

Please read our report and share it with your friends, community groups and teams.
