Project Protect 2020

From our whole team, we wanted to say a BIG thank you to everyone who donated, participated, shared, and engaged in our fundraising initiative! We are beyond grateful for the support that we received, and are blown away at how much we raised - $7,760! This whole project wouldn’t have been possible without the donations of a huge range of generous people, so thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. Today we wanted to take a moment to spotlight some mental health resources. If you’re experiencing any domestic violence or mental health issues please consider calling one of these hotlines. Also be sure to check out some of our tips on taking care of yourself during these times of uncertainty. We know that this pandemic has had various consequences on people’s lives, but we want you to know that you are not alone! We encourage everyone to head to our comment section and tag three friends they’re grateful for or who they can’t wait to see once they get out of quarantine!

“I put my whole life on pause because of this pandemic.”

Jamie West, a 32 year old from Mexia, Texas, has been a registered nurse for 12 years. West has worked in multiple specialties (from Medical/Surgical to PACU) and is currently in the MSN program at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Since the breakout of COVID-19 in the U.S., West has been working effortlessly to treat patients affected by the virus. She has since travelled to New Jersey from Texas and endured an intense work day regularly. West treats about 5 to 9 patients and deals with the stresses of properly protecting herself with the already scarce amount of PPE, incoming calls from anxious families, and contracting the virus herself.

West is the mother of three children, Case, Haylee and Kelsie, all of whom are too young to understand why their mom has left in the first place. Facetiming them when she can, West listens to her children cry and express how much they want her to come back home while she is risking her life to treat those in need. Although extremely hard, West questions why she should “sit around [her] house when there is something [she] can do about this pandemic.” The personal sacrifice and bravery of healthcare workers such as Jamie West truly solidifies them as heroes during these difficult times.

“The moment that I look forward to the most is when I walk out of the hospital, take my mask off of my face and breathe in the cool, fresh air.”

Today we wanted to highlight the reason that we founded Project Protect and on what Direct Reliefhas done during this time where medical staff is in need of supplies. Direct Relief and so many other organizations are doing a wonderful job and helping out in so many ways. We picked them because we wanted to provide as much help as we can to frontline medical workers and knew that 100% of what we raise will go towards purchasing protective gear for these workers. Update on some COVID-19 statistics. Since last week fatalities have doubled, and 200,000 more are infected. However, our frontline healthcare workers are working extremely hard to contain the disease and treat our vulnerable populations. With effective efforts, the growth rate is gradually decreasing . Project Protect is fundraising for a humanitarian aid organization called Direct Relief, a nonprofit organization active in all 50 states of America and more than 80 countries, with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies – without regard to politics, religion, or ability to pay. They are providing face masks, gloves, and other PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to healthcare workers on the frontlines of this global pandemic.
