Instead of joining the circus of culture that captures chaos to create content for comedy or critique for moral high ground, Christians should pray for Donald J. Trump , and all of our government leaders. We should pray for their well being, and that our world would be peaceful. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)

Instead of being captivated in thought by an anxious and violent culture — we should submit our thoughts to God so we can have peaceful minds that lead to Godly responses.
(Philippians 4:6)

‘Evidences for Jesus’ — Josh McDowell & Sean McDowell 7.5/10

‘Evidences for Jesus’ by Josh and Sean McDowell is a great introductory read for those seeking to better their understanding of evidences for Christianity. The best aspect of the book is its concise nature. It is brief, easy to read, but comprehensive enough to provide a reasonable case for Christianity. The book presents evidences for the reliability of the Bible, Jesus’ identity claims as God, as well as the historicity of the life, death, burial, and empty tomb of Jesus. Furthermore the books concludes by investigating the alternative naturalistic theories surrounding the empty tomb of Jesus and how none of them can explain all the historical facts quite like the supernatural event of Jesus resurrecting from the dead. Overall, the books builds an accumulative case for the Christian faith chapter by chapter.

The McDowell’s take the reader through their own personal journey of how they discovered the truth of the Christian faith, and each chapter explores challenging questions of doubt they have had throughout their life. This approach makes the book relevant to the life of the reader as everyone has difficult questions of doubt about their faith that they wrestle with.

I would encourage Christians and non-Christians alike to read this book. If you are a Christian experiencing doubts about your faith and questioning if there is truth behind your beliefs — this book can help you. If you are a non-Christian, but someone who is open to truth and curious if there are evidences behind what Christians claim to be true — this book is an excellent place to start. Perhaps you are a Christian who simply desires to grow in your understanding of evidences for Christianity — this book can help you.

Another book review 📚

‘The Soul’ — J. P. Moreland 8/10

‘The Soul’ by J.P. Moreland is a deeply rich philosophical book that provides a robust definition of what the soul is as well as a robust reasoning for why it matters to know and understand the soul from a biblical and common sense perspective. Moreland spends a lot of time defining and contrasting the views of physicalism and dualism, so that the reader understands each view’s implications when lived out. Moreland clearly communicates why our view of the soul and human identity matters, as it is something that impacts how we live, why we live, what we live for, and the hope we live with. Although Moreland identifies a range of types of dualism he primarily presents an argument in favor of “substance dualism” — “the view that a human person has both a brain that is a physical thing with physical properties and a mind or soul that is a mental substance and has mental properties.”

This is a challenging read as it is full of robust definitions, terms, premises, and vocabulary that requires the reader to not just read each chapter, but know it intimately through study. I would recommend this book for any Christian that is serious about making a case for God to those who reject God due to the presupposition that science has “outgrown” the concept of God and the spiritual realm. Those who reject the reality of God and the spiritual realm would be shocked to learn that the reality of God and the spiritual realm have less to do with science and more to do with philosophy. Moreland shows that dualism is the commonsense view compared to physicalism, and that if we were merely physical clumps of matter that life in fact would not truly matter.

Moreland presents a beyond reasonable philosophical case for why God exists, and how we are not mere material substances with physical properties, but rather immaterial souls that not only differ from our physical bodies, but exist beyond our biological life. At the end of every chapter there is a well-organized review of the chapter, its primary points of focus, as well as key terms and their definitions. This makes it easy to review, study, and familiarize yourself with the book without getting lost or left behind. This book is an excellent read for anyone seeking to challenge themselves to grow in their philosophical understanding of God, human identity and nature, consciousness, the realities of Heaven and Hell, and more.

The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player — John C. Maxwell 7/10

‘The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player’ by John C. Maxwell is a practically book for anyone going into an arena in which they will have to work with a team of others to succeed in a specific mission. Isn’t that the arena in which all of life is experienced?

The book is extremely digestible, and better yet applicable. Each chapter is short, and equips the reader with a specific step by step plan to implement the quality in which the chapter emphasizes. This is a good book for those who are desiring to work better with others, improve themselves, and get better at accomplishing goals.

The book requires the reader to possess humility as it will identify qualities in which the reader is strong in as well as qualities in which are weak within the reader. If one reads the book with a sense of humility they will find themselves an opportunity to strengthen the areas in their life that are weaknesses.

Completed my first 11 mile run making it the longest run I’ve done. Great way to start my journey in Terre Haute!

I’ll run it a few more times this month, but save the half marathon (13.1) for the race at the end of July.

I quickly picked up this book because DrThomas CL Thomas recommended I read the work of Dallas Willard, and I am thankful I did.

‘The Allure of Gentleness’ — Dallas Willard 8/10

‘The Allure of Gentleness’ by Dallas Willard is a sobering apologetics reading that brings the Christian apologist back to the heart and aim of apologetics. Willard isn’t interested in the apologetic approach that aims to win arguments, but rather he is interested in an approach that aims to relationally service to those with real doubts about God and faith. The book puts the focus on engaging in apologetics as Jesus does — with gentleness, humility, and love. Willard argues that the greatest case for Christ to those who doubt or are unbelieving is a Christian walking and practicing an active relationship with Christ. The book centers not on trivial arguments that lead to the inflation of pride within the apologist, but rather effective responses that deal with the real questions of suffering people who wonder if God even cares about their day to day pain.

I would recommend this book to every Christian who desires to bring others to Christ. It will equip you with humility to not just teach others about Jesus through premises and points of argumentation, but to walk alongside others with a relational compassion that reflects Jesus himself. This book matters, because the heart and aim of apologetics matter. Why? Because people matter to God, and how we approach people about God matters

10 out of 10 alert! 🚨

‘Mere Christianity’ — C.S. Lewis 10/10

‘Mere Christianity’ by C.S. Lewis is an essential read for new and seasoned Christian’s alike. It brings the reader to the very core of what Christianity is all about. Lewis writes with a beautifully rare combination of intellect and humility as he reveals deep found truths about God, morality, Christian life, identity, virtues, sin, and the purpose and mission of God’s work in man. The reader will be challenged, inspired, humbled, and encouraged throughout the book, and might I even add dared to be transformed.

I would encourage this to be read by every Christian as it will be a foundational piece of literature to the growth and development of your faith and walk with God. Furthermore, I would even suggest non-believers to read this book as it will introduce you to the truth of what Christianity is and isn’t.

Have you read Mere Christianity? If so, drop a comment on your thoughts on the book!

‘Person of Interest’ — J. Warner Wallace 8.5/10

‘Person of Interest’ by J. Warner Wallace is an incredibly engaging, exciting, and eye-opening read that becomes difficult to put down once you begin. Wallace creates a case for Jesus through applying the same investigative methods as he has for no-body homicide cases. Through the use of creative and effective illustrations Wallace identifies evidences for a “fuse” pointing to why Jesus arrived precisely when He did as well as evidences for a “fallout” pointing to the unparalleled world wide impact he has had from that time. These evidences serve to show that Jesus is not a mere myth, liar, or lunatic, but rather Lord and God himself as He and the New Testament authors claim. Jesus is history’s greatest “person of interest”, and Christianity is demonstrably true. The evidence speaks for itself.

I would recommend this book to both believers and non-believers alike. It will strengthen the faith of those who believe as well as equip them with further tools in their toolbox of apologetics to better defend the Christian faith. For the unbeliever it will clear away debris from the windshield in which they view Christianity through as it explores common misconceptions, questions, and doubts surrounding Jesus. Furthermore, Wallace takes a humble approach that is inviting the reader to investigate truth rather than a combative approach that seeks to argue.

The earliest first and second century Christian’s were not persecuted for spreading Jesus’ teaching’s of love and inclusion. Rather they were persecuted for their unrelenting proclamation of the exclusivity of Jesus. They worshipped Jesus as the one true God. They refused to recognize the Roman pantheon of gods as equivalent or equal to Jesus.

The world will know that we are disciples of Jesus through how we love one another (John 13:35), but I pray that Christians today would grow in boldness to proclaim Jesus as the one true God whom we are exclusively saved by (Acts 4:12)

Let us not worship the culture’s pantheon of other gods (consumerism, self-pleasure, s*x, identity, etc)

‘Christian History Made Easy’ — Timothy Paul Jones

7.5/10

‘Christian History Made Easy’ by Timothy Paul Jones certainly lives up to its name as it effectively covers basic Christian history from AD 49-2009. The strengths of this book is that it is a short, digestible read, and so it serves as an excellent introduction for anyone desiring to get their feet wet in the waters of church history. Unlike some history books that are overwhelming to even look at, the author does a good job at formatting the book to read like a story, making it a smooth and seamless reading experience. Furthermore, each chapter begins with a list of events, names, and terms to remember from within the chapter to make it easy to study and memorize.

My greatest critique of the book is that it often left me wanting more. Although the author’s aim is not to dive into great detail of church history, it felt as if each chapter would leave me hanging with more questions than answers. Perhaps that is what the book was wanting to achieve, but there were portions that seemed rushed and incomplete. Aside from this, ‘Christian History Made Easy’ is an excellent read considering how quickly it can be read and understood. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a good starting point for learning Church history, and influential people within Christian history.

Happy Memorial Day! Today is a reminder that sacrifice is the greatest form of love one can give.

Be thankful for those who sacrificed their life in war, so that we could enjoy our earthly freedom and rights.

It serves as a reminder of Jesus who sacrificed Himself in the ultimate war against sin, so that we could experience ultimate freedom from sin and the right to be called children of God.

Just finished ‘I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be An Atheist’ by Frank Turek & Norman L. Geisler.

I would give it an excellent score of 8.5/10

‘I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be An Atheist’ is a book that every Christian who is seeking to grow in confidence in their convictions, and learn the evidential why behind their beliefs, should read.

Although a lengthy read, it is by no means overly complicated to grasp or convoluted in its reasoning. Turek and Geisler provide a philosophically sound argument for the foundational truth’s of Christianity as well as a multitude of categorical evidences to support their argument. They consistently cite a range of sources from that of Christian and non-Christian scholars, critics, historians, skeptics, and even atheists to ensure that they aren’t merely speaking in an echo chamber or preaching to the choir.

The book works to help equip the reader with not only positive evidence for Christianity, but a solid understanding of some of the major objections to Christianity. This approach is especially helpful to equip the reader with the ability to be better at communicating Christianity with those who object to it in a relational, respectful, and whimsical way. Furthermore, reading the book will help one to understand some of foundational pillars of philosophy — which in result will clear away some of the debris that gets in the way of sound reasoning.

I encourage Christians to not just read this book, but study its arguments as well as the evidence presented. Doing so will strengthen their own faith, help them in their doubts, and empower them to be better ambassadors for Jesus Christ to those who are skeptical or even hostile towards Christianity.

The two most precious people in my life.

I am so blessed.

22/04/2024

This past weekend I was honored to staff another weekend for The Crucible Project in Houston, TX.

14 men arrived on this sacred ground Friday night and stepped into great darkness, so that they could discover great light. They experienced radical authenticity, integrity, courage, and grace. They experienced the true and almighty God in a powerful way through a powerful community of safe men.

They wrestled with God, and lived to tell the story. They are changed men.

I believe God is working through The Crucible Project to help change and transform men into the men God created them to be. It certainly has equipped me with tools and community to live the life God wants me to live for my family, myself, and my community.

If you are looking for change around areas in your life that are not working — I encourage you to sign up for a weekend. Message me if you have any questions or want to learn about getting signed up. They have weekends for both men and women throughout the year, and around the world.

Register to attend a weekend: https://thecrucibleproject.org/crucible-weekend-for-men/

The Journey Continues

17/04/2024

After finishing ‘On Guard’ by William Lane Craig from Reasonable Faith I would give it a high score of a 9/10.

It’s philosophically thorough, profound, and yet practical for every believer. Dr. Craig excellently presents not just a singular case for the faith, but an accumulative case that is unshakably strong.

The book helps educates believers to know why they believe what they believe from a philosophical, scientific, scriptural, and historic standpoint. It equips the believer to whimsically and reasonably defend God’s existence, objectivity of truth, the reliability of the Bible, and the historical facts surrounding Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

I believe that every follower of Jesus should pick this book up, and familiarize themselves with the arguments presented, as well as the common objections to each premise so that they can become better defenders of the Christian Faith in their relationships with others.

Not only will it help you grow in your ability to defend the faith, it will help build your faith. It addresses tough questions commonly asked about God, the existence of the universe, truth, the Bible, suffering, and Jesus while providing more than adequate answers that help provide an anchor of confidence for when life brings about doubt regarding these areas of thought.

I am thankful for Dr. Craig’s work, and inspired by him to be a better defender of Christianity. If you are seeking to grow your faith, and grow in your ability to share your faith with others with reason and respect — I highly encourage you to pick this book up for your next read.
