I use a variety of different activities and tools to help my students succeed in phonics and in my 1:1 lessons, I can customize and personalize their lessons so I meet them where they are at. From beginning phonics and learning to recognize that letters have sounds and being able to blend them all the way to multisyllabic words. It’s not just being able to decode words, it’s also being able to comprehend meaning.

Vocabulary is an important part of reading comprehension. When I help my students with reading, I’m working on several skills. I want to make sure they can pronounce the word correctly, but I also want to make sure they understand the meaning. In this activity, my student has to read the word and find the matching picture, then drag the correct picture into the correct box. After they match the picture to the word, they write a sentence to show meaning. I also will correct grammar at this point too. Does your child struggle with vocabulary?

🤩 Student Spotlight 🌟

One of my newest students, AnAn, has only been in my classes from October. I’ve been working on reading and writing with her and I’m so amazed at the progress she is already showing. She is adding so much more detail in her stories.

✍️ Writing tip: Ask your child “what happens next” to help them think about what could come next in their story. If your child is not ready to write yet, have them tell the story to you and you write it down and let them draw a picture.

📚 Put the stories together in a book for your child to enjoy.

One of my favorite classes. We read a RAZ book and then we write a story using the same theme. Today’s theme is about our character being sick.

How does the class go?

🧠 we activate prior knowledge and build background
🔎 preview vocabulary and review sight words
📚 read the book
🗺️ brainstorm our story using story elements (who, what, where, when, why) and we talk about our beginning, middle and end
✍️ we write our story and draw a picture to match

🎉 Family Fun with the Opposite Word Game! 🎲

Hey there, amazing parents! Looking for a playful way to boost your child’s vocabulary? 🗣️ Let’s dive into the Opposite Word Game! 🌟

🃏 What You’ll Need:

• A deck of cards (or you can easily create your own)
• Enthusiastic players ready to learn!

🧠 Game Rules:

1. Card Creation: Write down words and their opposites on separate cards. For instance, “hot” and “cold,” “happy” and “sad,” or “fast” and “slow.”
2. Mix and Match: Shuffle the cards well and place them face-down in a stack.
3. The Reveal: Each player takes turns drawing a card and reading the word aloud.
4. Opposite Hunt: The challenge is to quickly come up with the opposite of the word on the drawn card! 🤓
5. Cheers for Opposites: Encourage your child to share their answer. If they’re right, celebrate their vocabulary win!

🎊 Why It’s Awesome:

• 🧠 Cognitive Boost: This game exercises their brain as they think on their feet to recall opposite words.
• 📖 Vocabulary Expansion: Discovering new words and their meanings fosters a love for language.
• 👪 Quality Bonding: Create lasting memories and laughter while learning together.

Remember, it’s not about being perfect—mistakes make for fantastic learning opportunities! 😄 Get ready for giggles, excitement, and impressive language skills.

Let’s embrace the joy of learning as a team! Share your Opposite Word Game moments using and tag me in your posts. 📸📚 Let the language adventure begin! 🚀🌈

🃏📚 Elevate Learning through Play! 🌟 Try these engaging card games ⏬

1. 👯‍♀️Word Match Mayhem: Create pairs of cards with matching words & images. Spread them face-down & have your child flip over 2 cards at a time to find matches.

2. 💡Synonym Showdown: Prepare cards with words & their synonyms. Lay out a few cards face-up & challenge your child to match each word with its synonym.

3. 📖Storytelling Deck: Write different words on individual cards and shuffle them. One player starts a story using a card as a starting point & includes the word in their story. The next player draws a card & continues the story, incorporating their word.

4. 🔠Categories Challenge: Create a deck with various categories like animals, foods, colors, etc. Draw a card & have your child name as many items from that category as they can within a time limit.

5. 🖼️Picture-Word Connection: Choose cards with images on one side & corresponding words on the other. Show your child the picture and ask them to guess the word. Once they've guessed, flip the card to see if they were right.

6. 🍲 Alphabet Soup: Write down letters on individual cards. Shuffle & draw a card, then challenge your child to come up with as many words as possible that start with that letter.

7. ↔️Antonyms Adventure: Create pairs of cards with opposite words. Place them face-down & have your child flip over 2 cards, trying to match words with their opposites.

8. 👂Rhyme Time Riddles: Write words that rhyme on separate cards & shuffle them. Draw a card & give your child a clue or description. They have to guess the rhyming word.

9. 🎱Vocabulary Bingo:Create bingo cards with words instead of numbers. Call out definitions or synonyms, & your child marks the corresponding word on their card.

10. 🫰Sight Word Snap: write common sight words on cards. Deal out the cards, and when 2 cards with the same word appear consecutively, the player shouts "Snap!"

Follow these 5 steps to help your child improve their English language vocabulary.

1. 🖍️ Play Pictionary - Okay, so I’m not the best artist. Even some of my students are better artists than I am and I always joke around with them that I’m not great at drawing. We have a good laugh and they really enjoy guessing what my drawing is. So no matter the artistic level of your child, you can still have fun with this game. The one rule is you cannot speak. You can only draw and the other person, or team, has to guess the word. This is great for practicing noun vocabulary words.
2. ❓ Guess the word or charades - For this game, you are allowed to talk and give clues. You need to stick a word on your head (they make headbanz for this, but if you want to get creative, maybe try something like a fun hat to stick the word on). Your child can try to guess the word on their head with the clues that you give them and they can also work on using descriptions to give you clues about your word. For example, if the word is ☀️, here are some clues: it’s yellow, it’s in the sky, you can see it during the daytime, it’s very hot…
3. 🔤 Scrabble - This is a great family game. This game will help your child with their vocabulary as well as their spelling.
4. ✍️ Crosswords - Similar to scrabble, except that this activity is something your child can do on their own. This will also help with comprehension as your child works on figuring out the clues.
5. 🖊️ Word Searches - This will help your child learn how to scan text to find familiar words, which will also be useful in their reading.

has such an amazing playground that is great for teaching or offering the kids a brainbreak. In this playground, I have a student who wanted to be a witch and she asked me to be one too and so we were witches making a potion. This playground has really helped open up my student who didn’t really like speaking English a year ago. Do you have a shy or unmotivated child who needs help with phonics, reading, or writing? Summer classes are now open and I’m looking for new students to join my online tutoring. If you’re interested, message me “summer”.
