Building a community for people harmed by the church where conversation & justice meet spirituality
I remember the year I went from accepted to outsider. It was third grade when Jenny moved to town. She was different. Her clothes didn’t fit and she was a little awkward around other children. I loved her. She was quirky and had a wonderful sense of humor. I grew closer to her as other kids started to pick on her....

Say Their Name: Nex Benedict
Say it again.
And again.
"They loved animals.
They had a cat named Zeus.
They loved to cook and invent recipes.
They loved playing Ark and Mindcraft.
They were a straight-A student.
They enjoyed reading.
They enjoyed art.
Nex had a light in them that was so big, they had so many dreams. I want their light to keep shining for everyone. That light was so big and bright and beautiful, and I want everyone to remember Nex that way.”
- Sue Benedict

Tonight is the Longest Night of the year.
Five years ago I lost my sister and brother ten months apart - my brother's death happening just 3 days before Christmas. This time of the year is filled with remembrance of both of them and the sadness that pervades my spirit.
Last year, I created a 22 minute reflection on the Longest Night. This video is filled with candle lighting, reflection, silence, a guided meditation, words of comfort. Although Advent and Hannukah are not running concurrently this year, the sentiment of both being times of light hold true. This video is to assist you in finding that light.
If you are struggling to find hope and light, you are invited to sit for a moment in this space. May the Light be found and held in your spirit on this, the Longest Night.
The holidays can be challenging- especially when we consider all the "happy" the commercial world throws at us when in reality family can be really hard. Where do we go for safe connections during this stressful time?
Surviving the Holidays: Finding Connection The holiday season can be really challenging. We have commercials and shows that talk all about family and coming together and everything being blanketed in fresh snow. But the reality behind the s…
I love to read. I love to hear a well-crafted story with characters whose depth reaches into my soul and tugs at me to see the world through a different lens. And I love happy endings because in real life they can be hard to come by. As books have been banned across our nation, I’ve been appalled by the voices that are being silenced....

David was a student of mine that went on to glory this week. I had only taught him this past year, so I didn’t’ know him well, but he was part of my life. He was a storyteller. He’d wrap you into the telling and, although I knew we needed to keep going with the class, I didn’t want to interrupt him because I knew the winding path would be worth the point in the end....

When I was little, our house was full of animals - dogs, cats, fish, guinea pigs - there were so many! My dog slept under the covers with me. There was always a cat near my finger tips. The guinea pig and I had great conversations. I can't say I cared that much about the fish. They just swam, ate, and died....

My mom is an amazing cook and baker. I have memories of experiments we sampled for her cookbook and making Christmas cookies together. But one of the things our entire family clings to is birthday icebox cake. When Nabisco stopped making the chocolate wafers this past year, I had to improvise and bake my own, When it came to food, my family didn't eat out much and sometimes our table might have seemed sparse to some, but there was always so much love....

Home can mean so many things. I met with a group of people on Thursday who embody home - not the one they were born into, but the one they have created. And they welcomed me, a stranger, into their midst. They were authentic and enjoyed good "dad" jokes (although I certainly wouldn't have told them to my children in their younger days!)...

Helen Keller knew what it meant to be a part of the community - and excluded from it. How might we remember that together we can do so much?
