Circle of Friends of Coz
Together, we ARE making a difference for kids and pets in Cozumel, Mexico!
RESULTS!
Vaccine Program for Dogs and Cats
We are pleased to announce that SEVENTY-FIVE pets are already vaccinated, dewormed and have had flea and tick medicine applied!
We are not finished yet, but thought we would share our progress and also our gratitude:
***We thank the families for inviting us to their homes, for committing to ALL 3 services for ALL of their animals, receiving us well, assisting with their animals, asking the vets thoughtful questions, and also for paying their portion of the bill. Prioritizing your pets' health and well-being is commendable, and even more so when timing inconveniently coincides with back to school time!
Your commitment to your pets is AMAZING!
***We thank the vets of the Miaidú Veterinary Clinic for attending to these home visits with organization, patience, professionalism and LOVE. Dra. Sandra and Dra. Illeana, you are INCREDIBLE, and your skills never cease to strike awe in those observing and participating.
Your dedication to the well-being of animals in our community is AMAZING!
***We again thank the donors who made it possible for us to offer these very important preventative services at deep, deep discount. This started as an emergency canine vaccine program, in response to a parvo outbreak. Due to your support we were able to add to our offerings the basic combo vaccine for cats, plus deparasition and the application of flea/tick preventative for BOTH dogs and cats.
The opportunity you provided to these families is AMAZING!
***We thank our volunteers who solicited help for this project, coordinated all the logistics, and accompanied the vets to assist as needed.
The time and effort you give are AMAZING!
This week, we will continue with the preventative Veterinary services, and we are also working on collecting physical items and monetary donation for pantries (food and hygiene packages) which will be sorted and delivered on September 6.
It is never too late to for YOU to get involved and be AMAZING!
Your help is absolutely vital to the continuation of these projects!
You can follow our page to keep up with what we are currently working on, and to see how YOU might be able to contribute to the well-being of kids and pets here on our beautiful island.
COZUMEL 12 THINGS CHALLENGE- BACK TO SCHOOL EDITION
Would you like to help Cozumel families in need? Well, Circle of Friends of Coz is preparing for our next food basket distribution!
The kiddos are going back to school, and for them to succeed in learning and growing, they need full tummies. They can't settle and focus when they are hungry.
In addition, during the storm season (continues another 2 months!), island families should always have non-perishable goods on hand. This is not easy for all families. Especially during low season, many families live day-to-day, shopping only for what they will eat that day.
You can help stock the cupboards of families that have been screened for need! But how?
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
***Pick one or more items from the list that you would like to provide a set of 12 of.
***Commit and communicate ASAP, but by Sept 3 (so we can plan)
***Shop for pledged items, and advise when purchased.
***Arrange for drop-off or pick-up of goods no later than Sept 4.
Drop a comment here, message the page, or message Laurie Carter right away so we can stay well-coordinated, and make necessary adjustments & arrangements

NOT ON THE ISLAND CURRENTLY, BUT STILL WANT TO HELP FEED KIDS AND PETS IN NEED?
For our pantries, we still do shop for dry goods that complement the items from the '12 Things Challenge". We also buy fresh produce, eggs and pet food for our families. Our volunteer accountant, Leo can accept PayPal if you would like to help us be able to do this!

*******OPPORTUNITY TO HELP FEED HUNGRY PETS*******
We have found that with the rising costs of pet food, some of our animal friends in the Circle are not getting enough to eat.
Would you be willing to be an angel to these animal friends and donate a large bag of dry dog or cat food for distribution either on or in between pantry days for those who need it?
If so, get in contact with us, either through a private message, or a comment on this post to coordinate. Together, we can help feed kids AND pets in Cozumel!
A BIG thank you to Vet Edith of AMEvets who donated 20 canine vaccines to our pet vaccination project.
This turned out to be especially important, as the small batch we ordered was 50 vaccines. We currently have 62 dogs on our list!
Thank you AMEvets for helping the pets in our community stay healthy. They are offering one of the lowest public prices for the ‘quintuple’ canine vaccine (that includes parvo and distemper).
If your pup needs vaccinating (or other services) consider giving them a call.
PET VACCINE UPDATE
WOW! Due to some very generous private individuals and one business, We are pleased to announce that we have procured not only the batch of desperately needed dog vaccines, WE WERE ABLE TO ORDER A BATCH OF CAT VACCINES AS WELL!
We are organizing to go out and see ALL of our families and their pets with a liscenced, reputable vet.
Our families will pay a small fee (approximately 10% of the lowest-priced public pet vaccines, with FREE housecall and mini consultation). It is important that we allow them the opportunity to contribute to their pets’ care. We gave them a little notice to have time to save. Deworming and flea and tick prevention will also be offered at a similar subsidizes percentage.
Stay tuned for news of our adventures visiting the families in the coming days!
Thank you so much for believing in this project, that we think is so important right now!

URGENT REQUEST
With the increase of cases of the deadly canine virus, Parvo, it is recommended that unvaccinated or under vaccinated dogs be vaccinated immediately. This is a state of emergency for the pups!
We have been offered a small batch of canine vaccines (‘quintuple’ which covers Parvo and distemper both) at a highly discounted rate. The batch of vaccines are offered by a trusted vet on the mainland, and will be handled and administered by our trusted vet here in the island.
Our courier is ready to go to Playa pick them up, and our vet is ready to start visiting the families and administering the vaccines.
A very small fee (approx 10% of the least expensive public option). Will be collected from the owner to show their responsibility and willingness to contribute to this important yearly vaccine for their pet.
Purchasing this batch of vaccines will allow us to protect all the dogs in the group quickly. Additionally, we are searching for a small batch of ‘triple’ vaccines for the kitties.
Having the vet visit the home is what is safest for the pets right now. It also allows us a first hand look at how the pets are being cared for and offers an opportunity for the family to ask questions and receive advice from a veterinary professional.
We are here to ask for your support to help us us execute this program. Will you help us buy these vaccines?
If you are on the island, you can contact Laurie Carter or Debbie Fields to drop off or pick up a contribution.
If you are currently off of the island, our volunteer accountant, Leo can accept PayPal at:

However you chose to help, be sure to note that it is for the PETS. Our main and reoccurring project is people (and pet) food pantries. We want to use your help as you intend, so let us know!
Thank you to the anonymous donor who bought diapers for our youngest Circle of Friends of Coz member.
Little man’s parents generally have his diapering needs covered, but this month lots of unexpected expenses meant they could use an extra hand.
It’s never too late to join us as we help kids and pets in need in Cozumel. Give our page a like and a follow to keep up with our pantry schedule, the 12 things challenge, and all the little projects, like this in between. You can send us a message if you really want to get involved right now. We have a couple projects on the burner right now!
July pantry day was a smashing success!
Despite a few changes/difficulties, the team was flexible and stayed lazer focused on the goal of getting these beautiful pantries into the homes of families in need here on the island.
From assessing, communicating, planning, counting beans (literally and figuratively), to scrambling, shopping, sorting and delivery what a great team effort! Thank you to everyone who participated.
It is never to late to join us! We shop for pantries regularly (every 6 weeks), and we have many special projects to help improve the conditions for the children and the pets in our group.
Drop a comment here, or send us a message to get involved. Give this page a like or follow to keep up with all of our projects.
We need help/funding to continue what we are doing.
We are able to accept PayPal to fund the projects you see here on our page.

UPDATED FOR TUESDAY, JULY 9
THANK YOU EVERYONE!
We will leave up for anyone who is just seeing this and still wants to give a hand. (A couple of tarps are still very much needed items).
So many good folks stepped forward and helped make this family be so much more comfortable during a very difficult time.
From soup to nuts (literally) and everything inbetween, you guys really came through, and immediately. Many of you still did not have power or water yourselves. Wow. And many of you from afar jumped right in. The family definitely feels the support and love besides the physical comforts provided!
The family is still in the salvage and drying out process, and it is quite apparent they will have to move to another rental pretty quickly, The building's roof and a wall have been severely compromised. Our support in the short-term is allowing them to gather themselves strongly for this next step, Although they had no savings the gentlemen is still able to work, and is doing so.
IT IS NOT TO LATE FOR YOU TO HELP OUT!
COLLECTION OF GOODS IS WITH GREG AND LAURIE IN COLONY ALM. Very close to Los Morros del Morrito Restauant.
The family has requested this method, to reduce the stress of the animals that can not be properly contained, and to allow them to focus on salvaging what they can, rather than stopping to greet many lovely, well-meaning visitors. In addition, their roof is compromised, so the bulk of things like pet food need to be stored off-site and just a few days’ worth taken to them.
*Call or message or whats app MX (+52) 987-141-6132. Arrange a time, or just let them (Laurie and Greg) know you are there. This step is important, as they can't see or hear the street from their place at the rear of the property
Here is a list of helpful items needed.
Cash to help them with a deposit on a new rental
Tarps to protect from rain
Dog food
Cat food
Mosquito netting to protect hammocks at night
Flea and tick prevention for cats
Dewormer for dogs and cats
Some fresh fruit and vegetables (but not too many perishables)
Milk, boxed or powdered
Cereal
Bread
Prepared (canned or envelopes) beans (refried and whole)
Salsa (small cans)
Disinfectant spray
Bug spray for home and garden
Honey for cough/allergies/asthma
Coconut oil
Large plastic storage bins with lids to protect their salvaged good s and food.
PAYPAL DONATIONS: If you are off of the island and want to help this and our other families (pantry day for our families is July 18) You can send a donation through Paypal to our volunteer accountant, Leo. We will organize the help coming in, and once we are certain that this family is taken completely taken care of, we turn our attention to the rest of the familes' normal food pantries that will be delivered on July 18.

THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO IS STEPPING FORWARD.
Friend to Friend, neighbor to neighbor...This is the way...
THIS IS HOW WE DO IT!!!!!
Friends, one of our own has been severely affected by the hurricane.
We are gonna need some help. Most of their things have been destroyed, and they do not have the means to move elsewhere at this moment. I am going to visit personally, and I have asked them to make a list of 20 things they need RIGHT now. Please be ready to help, friends.
Right now, I know they need bug repellent, a mosquito net for their bed, and dog and cat food immediately. They have lost most of their clothing as well. They are continuing to dig out and salvage what they can...
Stand by for needs, please. These folks and their pets desperately need our help.
A big thank you to John and Pam Martin for helping out with diapers for a rapidly-growing special needs youngster, who is in school and needs the extra protection.
It is never too late to join us. Some of our projects in the next 30 days include food pantries for our families, dog and cat food collection/distribution, and hopefully, (fingers crossed) flea and tick preventative offered to all the animals in our group for just a fraction of the cost (subsidized with YOUR help).
We need help to continue with our projects.
Please consider contacting us today to learn more, or to make a contribution towards this month's projects. Our volunteer accountant, Leo, can even accept paypal if you are currently off of the island.

Panda and Fido send a big thank you to:
Melany and Tim O'Brien
Wendy Jackson
For the donation of dog and cat croquetas for distribution immediately, in between our normal pantry dates. Panda and Fido and their animal siblings were delighted with our visit. In-person visits also allow us to build rapport and gain first-hand knowledge about our families and their needs.
Also a big thank you to:
Wilma Varga
For kicking off our dog and cat food stockpile for distribution on our next pantry day, July 18. Besides a BIG bag of dog food and another of cat food, she included some fantastic wet food packets for the doggies.
It is not too late to join us in feeding kids and pets on Cozumel!
We are still collecting dog and cat food for distribution with and between pantry days.
We are preparing for our next pantry day, by collecting for shopping and through our "12 Things Challenge"
We are also collecting for a bulk purchase of flea and tick preventative for cats and dogs. This purchase and the subsequent application is done in coordination with our volunteer veterinarian to assure a quality product is applied correctly. This also gives the pets and their owners direct contact with a veterinarian.
We need more help to continue our projects.
Please consider contacting us to find out more, or to make a direct contribution to our current projects. Our volunteer accountant, Leo, can even accept PayPal if you are not currently on the island.

EDIT: THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU. THIS EXPENSE IS BEING TAKEN CARE OF BY A VERY KIND COMMUNITY MEMBER. THERE WILL STILL BE OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP IN THIS AREA AS WE PROCURE FLEA AND TICK PREVENTATIVES TO HELP OUR FAMILIES' PETS.
Friends, I come to you with the grim reality of flea and tick-borne diseases here in Cozumel.
Flea and tick season is in full swing here on the island. Many families have trouble keeping up with preventative medications and environmental treatments, especially when they have multiple animals. Unfortunately, this resulted in tragedy for one of our Circle families.
Although they did use some preventative medications, it was not enough. One of thier pets, Lucho, became critically ill, and was rushed to the emergency vet. The young owner took a loan from his restaurant job to help pay for testing, hospitalization and the start of treatment. Lucho was diagnosed with anaplasma and erlicia. These are both tick-bourne diseases. A blood transfusion was being discussed but it was all too late. Lucho passed away this morning, at just 4 years of age. Rest in peace, Lucho.
We come to ask for a final kindness for the young owner.
****$600 pesos is outstanding to IslaVet.
****The young owner would like to reclaim Lucho's body tonight
Can you help? Arrangements need to me made ASAP directly at IslaVet
Thank you to Amanda Lyons, who works for a pet food manufacturer, and Gio Ortega, who paid for transportation to bring the shipment to the island.
Our Circle of Friends of Coz kitties are really enjoying their special treat in the families' pantries for the past few months!
Thank you to Casa De Patas for storing and distributing the Cozumel portion of the food! Many independent rescuers, TNR programs, and animal welfare organizations have been issued some of this food.
Circle of Friends of Coz is proud to be part of this effort, and so grateful for this excellent food to be shared with our families' pets and so many more.
Together, we make a difference for animals in Cozumel!
From your hearts to their homes.
Whether sharing our posts, donating, participating in the 12 things challenge, organizing, sorting, delivering, communicating with families, or "counting beans" (literally or figuratively), our families say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

THANK YOU to an anonymous donor for covering these services, and a special
THANK YOU to the Humane Society of Cozumel Island for being our partner for these vet services! Their direct Paypal is at the end of this post. Supporting them allows them to say "Yes!" when the animals in our group need a paw
Doggies Canela, Marimba and Melissa (and their owners) thank you as well. The update on how we spent this donation is as follows:
A) CANELA received her surgery to remove the tumor on her foot on Thursday, April 25, and there may still be some follow-up needed. However, that day's charges were paid in full THANK YOU, anonymous donor!
B) MARIMBA's test was pre-paid on that same day, and owners will make an appointment this week to complete that service. THANK YOU, anonymous donor.
C) Thanks to the low-cost vet services provided by the Humane Society of Cozumel Island, the same donation was stretched to cover the testing for a 3rd ill dog, MELISSA. THANK YOU!
****EDIT #1: 100 USD PLEDGE RECEIVED, PLEASE WATCH FOR NEXT OPPORTUNITY*****
ORIGINAL POST:
****Opportunity to help a family with vet care for their pets****
Did you know that a volunteer vet offers advice to Circle of Friends of Coz, and volunteers her time to visit our families periodically?
Having our families get to know a veterinary professional and being able to ask questions in an informal setting (such as their own home) can lead to better care levels for our animal friends.
Immediate needs discovered during this families visit: Canela has a soft tumor on her back paw that needs to be removed, and Marimba needs a 4-way snap test performed for common doggie diseases. She is losing weight although she is eating normally.
(Please note: This family has rescued several animals from the street, many with health issues. All are sterilized. The family is receptive to and follows our vet's advice well).
Would you please consider helping Canela and Marimba receive needed care? Arrangements have been made for the Humane Society of Cozumel Island to perform both services for $1050 pesos, or about 62 USD.
If you would like to help, the fees are payable directly to the Humane Society of Cozumel Island. You could use one of their PayPal links listed below, or pay directly at the front desk. Please mention that your donation is for Canela and Marimba from Circle of Friends of Coz. Please also communicate with us, (send a screenshot or photo of payment receipt) so we know when the fees are covered and can have the family book the services.

Together, we can do more!
When we accept gently used clothing and household goods, if there is no direct recipient match in our families, we then share the remaining donations with other groups whose goals and values align with ours.
Kan - Cozumel is having a bazaar in a few days to raise money for their pet spay/neuter/vaccination programs, and we are happy to share with them a variety of donated treasures to help them with this goal!.
Thank you to all who made the Circle of Friends of Coz April pantry day successful!

Please "like" and/or "follow" us at Circle of Friends of Coz to keep up with all our shenanigans, and to have the opportunity to help when you see something that interests you.
(In addition to feeding needy kids and pets, we have helped families with backpacks, shoes, school inscription fees, vet visits, flea and tick preventative, medications, vaccines, medical supplies, beds, other furniture, clothing, ferry tickets, baby gear, and even tools for working fathers who are tradesmen! We learn of specific special needs through our relationships with our families, and we try to assist as we are able. We can only do this with your support.).
