Narrowboat cruise with some IMPRESSIVE canal engineering - we go OVER A RIVER + UNDER A ROUNDABOUT Come along on what will be one of our final cruises of the summer! We encounter several examples of canal engineering along the way from the first lock which...
We thought we'd share something a bit different today with a few photos from our cruise along the Stourbridge Canal πΈ
After passing through the Delpth Locks earlier in the day, we took a left turn at Leys Junction which is just before the first lock of the 'Stourbridge Sixteen' flight.
With sixteen locks to complete, we were making good progress but noticed that the pound between locks 6 and 7 was quite shallow. Even so, we were surprised to find a moor hen's nest in the middle of the pound! It was a close call but we just managed to cruise past without disturbing the nest π
We were met by some incredible views of Wordsley as we passed the halfway point at lock number 8. At over 100 ft tall, the Redhouse Glass Cone was also visible in the distance. This was a highlight of our cruise as although we didn't get to visit the cone itself, we did cruise past it and enjoyed learning about the history of the glassworks in the process.
The penultimate lock proved quite a struggle for us as neither of the doors would shut! We were fortunate as some passersby were able to help out and keep the gates closed while Dan lowered the paddles.
While we were excited to reach the final lock, we were disappointed by the amount of litter and rubbish that had accumulated in it. We couldn't even open the lock gates properly so picked out as many pieces of the offending trash as we could before entering the lock.
By this point, it was getting pretty dark and our relaxing cruise had turned in to a race to moor up before nightfall π We passed Wordsley Junction and continued along the Stourbridge Canal as we hadn't planned a detour to the Stourbridge Town Arm on this occasion. Shortly after the aqueduct, we found a suitable mooring spot and decided to call it a day! π€
Thank you for reading our short account of the cruise.

Thank you to everyone who wished her a happy birthday and for all of your lovely messages π
The rainbow cake suggestions were very much appreciated too. We didnβt think weβd be able to pull it off but I donβt think it came out half bad! Skylar thought it was yummy too which is the main thing π
π
Itβs Skylarβs birthday tomorrow so we asked her what type of cake she would like (expecting her to of course say chocolate)
Instead, she asks for a rainbow cake! π
We have 1 baking tin to our name and the best part of the afternoon to make this happen π
Wish us luck!
The Liveaboard Family Story
A young family living on a narrowboat - what could possibly go wrong?!
Follow our journey continuously cruising the UK canal network and living off grid with a new episode on YouTube each week.
After privately renting for many years, we wanted more freedom and a secure environment to raise our young daughter. By June 2019, we had found the tiny home of our dreams - a 48ft narrowboat which we soon purchased. With very little boating experience, we moved aboard and set about learning the ropes while documenting the reality of boat life.
