Dincolo de granițe: post-editarea traducerilor automate în zilele noastre și în viitor. Practici și provocări

În data de 15 martie, Departamentul de Limbi Moderne Aplicate, în colaborare cu Direcția Generală Traduceri a Comisiei Europene, a găzduit conferința internațională TEW Cluj 2024 - Dincolo de granițe: post-editarea traducerilor automate în zilele noastre și în viitor. Practici și provocări, în format hibrid: sesiune plenară desfășurată atât fizic, cât și online (via Zoom/Youtube) și trei ateliere practice desfășurate în format fizic.

În debutul conferinței, un cuvânt de bun venit a fost adresat participanților din partea doamnei Daniela Badea, reprezentanta Direcției Generale Traduceri a Comisiei Europene la București; a domnului conf.univ.dr. Alex Goldiș, prodecanul Facultății de Litere; a doamnei conf.univ.dr. Renata Georgescu, directoarea Departamentului de Limbi Moderne Aplicate și a doamnei asist.univ.dr. Andreea-Maria Sărmașiu, inițiatoare și coordonatoare a conferinței din partea DLMA/UBB Cluj-Napoca.

Sesiunea plenară l-a avut în centrul ei pe profesorul Dragoș Ciobanu de la Universitatea din Viena, care a prezentat comunicarea intitulată: „Din ce în ce mai foarte curios!” Probleme mai noi și mai vechi, mai mult sau mai puțin rezolvate după ani de cercetare și aplicare a tehnologiilor de traducere automată.

În continuarea conferinței, s-au desfășurat trei ateliere practice axate pe aceeași temă: post-editarea traducerii automate. Un prim atelier, susținut de doamna dr. Sabina Luciana Tcaciuc, traducător în cadrul Direcției Generale Traduceri a Parlamentului European, a adus în prim-plan practicile și provocările post-editării traducerii automate la Parlamentul European. Al doilea atelier, organizat de doamna Nadia Farcaș, coordonator calitate în cadrul Departamentului de limba română al DGT (Comisia Europeană), s-a axat pe post-editarea traducerii automate la DGT – dificultăți și abordări practice. Cel de-al treilea atelier, coordonat de doamna Veronica Durbacă, jurist-lingvist la Unitatea de traducere de limba română a Direcției Generale Multilingvism a Curții de Justiție a Uniunii Europene, a evidențiat limitele IA generative și ale post-editării MT la redarea în română a deciziilor CJUE redactate în franceză.

O zi bogată în informații și experiențe împărtășite, o zi a unor schimburi de idei și perspective între mediul academic și mediul profesional/piața muncii prin intermediul tuturor celor prezenți: profesori, studenți, masteranzi, doctoranzi, traducători sau profesioniști/specialiști din diverse domenii conexe domeniului traducerii.

🖲We shall examine together a passage from a decision already delivered by the Court of Justice of the European Union and observe the cases where LLM (GPT-3.5 and Gemini) and machine translation engines (Google Translate, DeepL and eTranslation) would be useful, as well as cases where they would be less useful. This is a hypothetical scenario. Only DeepL and eTranslation are actually used in the translation process at the CJEU.

🌍 The workshop focuses on the post-editing machine translation process and practices in the Romanian language Unit of the Directorate General for Translation, European Parliament. After a brief introduction of the translation process at the European Parliament, a classification of challenges posed by machine translation will be presented, with examples from translated texts. The second part of the workshop, more practical, will involve an analysis and discussion of the solutions proposed by machine translation in a text translated at the European Parliament.

➥ Throughout the event, coordinated by the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission and the Department of Applied Modern Languages (Faculty of Letters of Babeș-Bolyai University), professors, researchers, students, translators, and business professionals will collaborate to exchange insights and experiences regarding post-editing. They aim to expose the challenges encountered in the current job market while also envisioning the future trajectory of this transformative shift in the translation process.

🌐 TEW Cluj 2023 brings together academics and professionals from diverse fields to dialogue and explore issues related to language for specific purposes, and its impact on translation, interpretation and terminology industries. As a keynote speaker, Associate Professor Renata Georgescu, Head of the Applied Modern Languages Department (Faculty of Letters, Babeș-Bolyai University) will share her professional and personal vantage points and opinions on interpreting at the Court of Justice of the European Union to an audience of students, professors and language practitioners and will explain where the professions of translator and interpreter meet and how the challenges of interpreting go beyond high-speed language transfer.
