Celebrating a Milestone in Simpson Bay!

Through the darkness, we continue to shine, and today marks a momentous occasion in our community journey. With immense gratitude, we are thrilled to announce that the newly installed lights for the Simpson Bay basketball court have been illuminated, thanks to the invaluable support of Minister of VSA Omar Ottley and NSI.

Let's take a quick journey down memory lane: After the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2017, the light poles at the basketball court were completely destroyed. With the help of the marines we were able to salvage some of the lights in order for the community to have some sort of lighting seeing that it was extremely dark.
In the election year 2020, our now MP Raeyon Peterson took a significant step by installing six new lights and replacing three poles. Since then, the lights have been a beacon for our community, albeit needing occasional maintenance.

Earlier this year, MP Peterson returned to fix three lights, ensuring functionality. We must mention however, the poles were severely damaged, posing a potential hazard with exposed live wires and only half of the court was lit due to 3 lights being completely damaged.

In discussion with Minister Ottley, we shared our plans to repair and beautify the Simpson Bay basketball court, and we are thrilled to share that all six lights and poles have been replaced. This court is the heart of our community, utilized daily for basketball enthusiasts, hosting skateboard nights every Tuesday and Thursday, which are free for anyone to join, learn and have a good time, and serving as a gathering space for community events that draw people from all around the island.
The lights that were taken down, which are still functional, will find a new home in our playground area, currently without any lights.

A heartfelt thank you to Minister Ottley for his contribution to this milestone. The journey doesn't end here, dear community. The roof of our bleachers still needs attention (meaning it is now non-existent), and more beautification projects are in the pipeline. Simpson Bay, true to its spirit, has always rallied together for the greater good, the bigger picture! We work year-round, not just during election time, driven by a collective commitment to our children, our community, and our entire island.

As we bask in the positive atmosphere created with our neighbors and St. Maarten people, let's keep our focus on the positive and continue making strides as leaders in our small but resilient community. We appreciate all the help we have gotten thus far and the more that will come because we know we cannot do it alone. It takes a village! The goal post does not stop here; it's a stepping stone toward even greater accomplishments. Together, we thrive!
