We are a group of scientists working together to mitigate the associated risks of the Sto. Niño mine. Who are we? What are we doing? How will you benefit?

We are a multidisciplinary group of scientists (i.e. environmental microbiologists, earth scientists, chemical and systems engineers and social scientists), who are working together to understand how to properly mitigate the associated physical and chemical risks of the Sto. Nino mine while simultaneously generating a sustainable, economically viable ecosystem in the municipality of Tublay. For 1

Yesterday, our team embarked on a series of impactful engagements, amplifying our network and deepening our collaboration efforts.

Highlights included a courtesy visit to the British Embassy, an insightful session at the Data Science Institute of DLSU McKinley Microcampus, a productive lunch meeting with Dr. Raymond Tan, VP for Research and Innovation at De La Salle University, and a strategic gathering at the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Head office.

Join us for the Community Validation happening at the Municipal Gym in Tublay, Benguet. Our team had a photo op with Mayor Armando Lauro, Municipal Mayor of Tublay. Dr. Anne Jungblut from the National History Museum graced us with her opening remarks, setting the tone for the day. Dr. Dennis Alonzo from the University of New South Wales Sydney presented the project milestones in the Ilocano language, adding cultural depth to our event.

Bio+Mine Eco Team Holds Sampling Activities in Tublay Sayote Farms - BioPlusMine Bio+Mine's Eco Team conducted sampling activities in select sayote farms within the Sto. Niño legacy mine site in Tublay last 8 December 2023. The collected plant and soil samples will be analyzed for possible heavy metal accumulation.

He is a recipient of the Outstanding Young Scientist Award for 2022 by the National Academy of Science and Technology and 2022 CEAT Distinguished Alumnus by the University of the Philippines Los Baños Alumni Association, Inc.

Wishing the happiest of birthdays to one of our post-doctoral research associates, Dr. Maria Magliulo! 🎂

Dr. Maria Magliulo's scientific curiosity revolves around understanding the co-evolution between life and its geochemical context, to join the discussion about the origin of life on Earth and the possibility of life elsewhere in the Universe. She pursued a career in Microbiology based on three counts: microbes are the first life forms to have originated, they are involved in biogeochemical cycles, and they are inhabitants of extreme environments.

Let’s meet the rest of the team!

Janna R. Andalan is a Research Assistant at the Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics (PRISM) of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT). She completed her Bachelor's degree in Biology majoring in Botany last 2017 and her Master’s in Biology last March 2023 from the same University.

She is involved in some MSU-IIT-OVCRE internally funded projects in a mine site in Tawi-Tawi and the Optimization of in vitro propagation of medicinal plants in Lanao del Norte. Her research studies specialize in plants, tissue culture, molecular biology, and phytoremediation. Currently, Janna is working on the heavy metal tolerance of fungal species and its efficacy in the phytoremediation activity of a potential heavy metal hyperaccumulator plant through a mesocosm approach.

: The Bio+Mine Water Team presented papers at the International Water Association (IWA) 20th International Conference on Diffuse Pollution & Eutrophication (DIPCON 2023) on 6-8 December 2023 at Daegu Exhibition & Convention Center in South Korea. The conference is part of the Korea International Water Week 2023, an annual gathering of stakeholders involved in addressing global water challenges.

Bio+Mine Eco Team’s Mesocosm Experiment Reaches Day 60 Milestone - BioPlusMine 07/02/2024

: On December 11, 2023, the Bio+Mine Eco Team celebrated a significant milestone: the 60th day of their mesocosm experiment.

The mesocosm, described as an experimental enclosure that simulates a larger-scale outdoor environment, was set up to explore the impacts of the legacy mine in Sto. Niño, Brgy. Ambassador on local plant growth.

He was awarded the Dangal ng Bayan Award in 2016 and the Centennial Most Distinguished Alumni Award in Resilience and Disaster Management by the Benguet State University.

Dr. Carlito B. Tabelin is a Professor of Metallurgical Engineering in the College of Engineering and the Acting Director of the Research Institute of Engineering and Innovative Technology (RIEIT) at Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology. He has been leading and collaborating on many national and international research projects (>Php 110M) and has more than 125 Scopus-indexed publications with a Google scholar h-index of 41.
