Violet is cooling and moistening and is used internally as a blood cleanser, respiratory remedy, and lymphatic stimulant. It is taken as a tea or syrup, and can also be eaten for its medicine. The exact dosage is not especially important since it can safely be consumed in large quantities. As a gentle food herb, violet is generally safe for elders, youngsters, and people who are taking pharmaceuticals.
Violet has a rich tradition in Europe, where it has been used for centuries as a pulmonary remedy for dry hacking cough. It is often recommended for bronchitis and whooping cough, along with the roots of marshmallow (Althaea officinalis). Violet can also be used as a tonic for chronically swollen lymph nodes. The leaves are a classic alterative herb, stimulating the release of wastes from the body by optimizing liver, kidney, lymphatic, and digestive functions. They are also sky-high in minerals and soluble fiber, which encourages healthy populations of beneficial intestinal flora. The pleasant mucilage in the leaves can soothe inflammation in the digestive tract As with many other herbs with an action on the lymphatic system, it has a long tradition of use in the treatment of cancer.

Rutin has been shown in animal and in vitro studies to be antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and blood thinning. Many foods that are high in rutin, such as buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), are eaten traditionally as a remedy for hemorrhoids and varicose veins.
Topically, violet is used as a poultice, compress, infused oil, and salve for dry or chafed skin, abrasions, insect bites, eczema, varicose veins and hemorrhoids. It is cooling, soothing, and anti-inflammatory.

Let's talk about Zingiber zerumbet, also known as Shampoo Ginger Lily. I found this during a hike in Guadalupe. Traditionally used to treat toothaches, ringworm, headaches, other skin ailments, and digestive problems. It is primarily studied for its therapeutic characteristics, but it can also be used as a natural shampoo and conditioner. Awapuhi Kuahiwi, Red Pinecone Ginger, Bitter Ginger, and Avanti are some of their other names. This belongs to the family of ginger plants, the Zingiberaceae (turmeric too). They do, in fact, have many of the same antioxidant benefits and applications, although bitter ginger is far more bitter.

Brown rice is a rich source of phenolic acids, vitamin E, tocotrienols, flavonoids and the rarely found gamma oryzanol. All of these are potent antioxidants with anticancer properties, and indeed brown extract was so toxic to human breast cancer cells that it killed off over 50% of them in a test tube. So it shouldn’t be surprising that a study in Korea found an incredible 58% less risk among women eating 350 grams daily of this healthy whole grain. As a side benefit, brown rice has also been linked with lower risk of type II due almost certainly to its lower glycemic index.

Garlic now has now passed the ultimate test for any healthy food: it’s been directly linked with longer life. A study on very elderly people in Asia (average age: 93) found that those who had eaten this amazing herb at least 5 times weekly back when they were 60 had 22% less risk of dying during the study period. That directly translates into longer life (see comments). Importantly, most of the people in this study ate their garlic raw, which best preserves its unique healthy compounds (thiosulfinates). Multiple studies have already linked to lower rates of and heart disease, but this new evidence just might elevate it to the best of . Source: Pubmed 31262080
Regular use of fresh sage has been linked with as astonishing 57% risk reduction for lung cancer in a study out of Italy. And no wonder. It’s loaded with potent antioxidants like rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid and the flavonoid luteolin. Its essential oil is rich in manool, cineole, pinene and borneol. Altogether these give fresh nearly 7-fold the antioxidant power of blueberries, meaning that a normal small portion of sage delivers a lot of antioxidants. Fresh may be an important part of the Mediterranean Diet which is linked to lower risk, so do consider using more of this amazing herb in your regular cooking.

There are so many reasons we love the geodesic dome greenhouse. The cover replacement is one of them.
In late summer we had a bad hailstorm, so some of the cover didn’t hold up. Many other greenhouse structures would have been not usable at this point. However, with the dome we just covered the top temporarily and continued to grow up till hard frost.
We could have replaced the sections that were damaged, but we knew winter is coming and there might be more frost damage. And as you see in the picture, there is.
So come spring we will replace all the damage with new cover, but we don’t have to replace the whole cover. It’s always just a triangle.
If you are considering to build a greenhouse in cold climate, with severe weather, we would recommend a dome.

Perhaps one of my most cherished herbal medicines, I have used licorice root for decades for its many versatile and therapeutic abilities. Let's take a closer look at this prized natural medicine.
Licorice root has been used for more than 3000 years to soothe irritation and halt inflammation, with gastro-protectant effects that have been recognized for centuries. In fact, licorice root was mainstream medicine's treatment of choice for healing gastric ulcers up through the 1950s and is still endorsed by Germany's health authorities.
Shown by research to be an effective anti-ulcer agent, licorice root raises the local concentration of prostaglandins that promote mucus secretion in the stomach leading to the healing of ulcers. However, it should be known that high doses of licorice over prolonged periods of time can lead to high blood pressure and dangerous drops in potassium due to one of its active compounds, glycyrrhizin. This compound can cause the body to retain sodium, lose potassium, and elevate blood pressure over time. However, there are special preparations (deglycyrrhizinated licorice, DGL) where this potentially harmful compound is largely removed, making it safe to take long-term.
