Not all back bends need to be extreme. If you’re looking for a less intense way to work into your back bends or is perfect for opening the chest and working into tight hip flexors.
I start my yoga session with sun salutations a.k.a which includes this asana. Repeating this posture helps to build strength and flexibility in the body.
Remember to keep the front knee stacked over the ankle, keep the hips facing forward and tuck the tailbone under to protect the lower back.
You can always pad out the back knee with a cushion. But if you magnetise the legs together and press the top of the back foot into the floor it takes pressure off the knee.

This is the closing mantra for . It’s really quite beautiful wishing everyone well, and an amazing way to complete your . It’s the same every time you practise Ashtanga so another good one to learn.
Learning prayers help to keep yoga closer to it’s roots. Sanskrit is an ancient and sacred language. Chanting these prayers, for me, is a beautiful and grounding way to begin your practise.
There are many Sanskrit prayers. This one is specific to Ashtanga. It’s always the same every time you begin practise. So it’s a good one to learn.
Remember yoga isn’t just the postures on the mat, there’s much more to it. So if you want to practice yoga, let’s try to respect it and start here.

This asana is a new one for me, I hadn’t really practised it much in the past. It’s part of the primary series which we have been practising style every day. I didn’t like this pose at first…now it’s almost my friend. Almost 🥵

The scene at breakfast every morning. This picture kind of reminds me of our chef here Aslam, who cooks and serves by day and fishes by night. Comes to work without sleeping. The man who I think I understand (through broken English and Malayan) had to sell his house to the bank to afford his heart bypass. He rents his home from them now. But don’t worry, in two years he has a plan to buy it back.
