Just a friendly reminder to be mindful this weekend and avoid high risk activities. For example, eating in a restaurant and working out at a gym are considered relatively high risk so try to find healthy alternatives like curbside pickup or at-home workouts!

Last chance to share for entry in the drawing this week! 😊

Hi everyone! I’m Michelle, a 2nd year student at UHCO, and I just wanted to share my personal experience with COVID this past summer. My dad had it in July, when Houston was going through one of its worst outbreaks, and it was a terrible experience that I wouldn’t wish upon anybody. He is OK now, but he was pretty sick for about 10 days. One of the hardest challenges we faced was deciding when we needed to take him to the hospital. We were told by his doctors not to take him to a hospital unless his fever did not break after 72 hours, or his O2 levels dropped below 94. Even then, they said it could potentially take hours for him to be seen. We absolutely did not want it to get this bad before he would be able to be seen, and we wanted to take him to the hospital sooner to be safe, but this was simply not an option for us at the time. Houston hospitals (in July) were so full.

I only mean to share this so I can say this: The precautions that we take as a community won’t be 100% perfect, but they will help significantly decrease the spread and prevent bad outbreaks. This gives hospitals and doctors in Houston, who are already serving such a large and socioeconomically diverse population, a better chance at treating those who are very sick from this virus. My family & I would have felt so much better if we had the chance to take him to the hospital as a precaution, and not as a last ditch effort once they deemed him “sick enough”. I feel very strongly that we should make safe decisions so that we can continue to give others this chance that was not an option when my dad was sick.

I know that this has been a really tough semester for all of us, and I am right there with y’all when the precautions can feel more like a nuisance/inconvenience than anything else. But there is something so endearing about facing these challenges together in order to protect each other & our community. After this is all over, we will be able to say that we overcame a HUGE challenge while we were in school—and we will be better, more empathetic doctors and people because of it.
