World Statistics Day is celebrated around the globe on October 20th and recognizes the importance of trust, authoritative data, innovation and the public good in national statistical systems. Connecting the world with data they can trust is essential in creating a healthy, functional society.

"Valid and reliable statistical techniques, many of which require little more than arithmetic, can equip citizens to pull back the curtain on political, cultural, and even personal bias and allow us all to engage in evidence-based decision making and problem solving. As empowering and relevant as Statistics is, studying and practicing sound statistics is one of the most important mathematical disciplines."
-Dr. Brad Whitaker, Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department

‘Growing up, American Sign Language was not a vital part of my everyday life. Coming from a hearing family, I did not utilize or learn much ASL as I relied on my hearing devices and lip reading for communication. However, through attending a high school that housed a mainstreamed D/deaf and Hard of Hearing Educational Service Program, I saw firsthand the importance of ASL, not only as a means of communication among the D/deaf community, but also as a bridge between hearing individuals and deaf individuals who may face communication barriers.’
-Sophia Hudson, Class of 2025

Worldwide, over 70 million people utilize sign language to communicate. In 2018 the United Nations General Assembly created International Day of Sign Languages in support of the D/deaf community.

The International Day of Peace is observed around the world each year on September 21st. Established in 1981, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences.
Achieving true peace requires the building of societies where all members are valued and can flourish. It involves creating a world in which all people are treated equally.

"Conflict is a killer. According to humanitarian groups such as Oxfam, in 2019 the number of people who have been forced from their homes by war and persecution reached 68 million – the highest number since World War II.
These individuals need assistance. They have been torn from their families and homes with no idea when, if ever they will be able to get back home. This creates layers of issues that require massive amounts of aid and relief. We can help reduce these numbers. Just imagine, even a small decrease in this number would mean millions of people could live their lives in peace without fear."
-Dr. Thad Hicks, Professor of Emergency Management and Criminal Justice

‘Literacy is a beautiful gift that enables us to give written expression to our thoughts and feelings. It also equips us to understand the ideas and emotions that others have conveyed in writing. Unfortunately, millions of people around the globe lack access to this gift. International Literacy Day is an opportunity both to celebrate the importance of literacy and to encourage efforts aimed at strengthening global literacy education.’
-Tim Radcliffe, MVNU Library Director
