2 Sticks and a Pinecone

Winter is too long for boring mittens! These mittens, scarves and bird ornaments are made from up cycled wool sweaters.

This sweater must have been so well loved! And so many adventures are ahead of it in the form of these beautiful mittens.

The northern lights have been incredible this past summer. Some of my strongest memories growing up in the Yukon were of watching the lights dance and shimmer on cold winter nights. These mittens are my attempt to recreate this magic.

This basic but kinda cute 100% wool sweater went in the creation of several pairs of mittens, all of which I think are gorgeous. I can’t make up my mind if I like the ones with the flowers or the pair with the fur cuffs better. Which are your favourites?

And then there are the Little Birds… what’s not to love about them?

My Little Birds make me smile. Every single one seems to have a unique personality!
I love handstitching my birds, using the sweater remnants from mitt making projects. Their little perches are an excuse to go for a walk along the lake shore to collect driftwood. And who doesn’t love shiny sparkly beads!

I love mushrooms! This week we “planted“ 600 shiitake and oyster mushroom plugs and prepared two new Wine Cap mushroom beds. I doubt any mushrooms that come of this will be as cute as these on this pair of mittens.🍄‍🟫

Cashmere mittens like no other cashmere mittens I’ve ever made! This spell of “cooler” -40 weather is inspiring the creation of warmer mitts. These have two layers of wool, with the layers stitched together so they keep their shape and that necessary warmth. And of course they have the suede palms. Love the grungy metal buttons; this pair is meant to have an active life.
This pair is a large. $60.

I did it!! finally a pair of mittens with a needle felted design.
At my first UNBC market I was given a set of needle felting needles by a fellow crafter, and was told that they expected to see some needle felted mitts in the coming years. It’s taken a few years…. My thanks to that crafter.

A few of my favourite things - the two moose we saw this morning at Ferguson Lake, the bear in the tree across the road from us (not the most favourite perhaps, but entertaining) and playing around making my mittens.
See you all next weekend at Studio Fair!

They passed with flying colours!! It was a lively walk around Ferguson Lake this morning and my hands were warm the whole time. According to Environment Canada it was all of -35 but so sunny. I also really do love the cashmere scarf I made.

Are your hands ready for this coming week? These are a few pairs created over the last few days. PM for details.

This past year I’ve so enjoyed using real fur as trim for mitt cuffs. The fur came from a coat which had been well loved and cared for but had met the end of it’s useful life as a coat. May it continue to bring joy to everyone who has a pair of mittens with its trim. These mittens feature the last of this amazing coat.

Spring has arrived and flocks of migratory birds are appearing in our backyard on a daily basis. And my Little Birds are increasing in number also. Lately the Owls have been providing “Great Joy” and when I found this stick it demanded a mobile be created. Wouldn’t it look fantastic hung in a window?
