Getting ready to record some vocals with my all time favorite mic, the Shure SM7b!

You have a metalband and want to record at home or in the rehearsal room? This is the mic you need to get!

☑️ It has a warm and natural sound quality that will give you excellent results on a variety of singing styles.
☑️ Being a dynamic mic, it takes high sound pressure levels and is a great choice for screaming vocals.
☑️ Compared to a highly sensitive condenser mic, the SM7b rejects a lot of room ambience. Great if you're recording in a room that's not perfectly acoustically optimized.
☑️ The SM7b has a built in shock mount to reduce handling noise. If singers feel uncomfortable using a micstand they can simply hold the mic with their hands.

Tips for recording:
✅ Experiment with using a normal popfilter instead of the build in one and see what sounds best for the individual style of singing.
✅ Experiment with the eq switches on the back and see what sounds best on the singers voice. I almost always use the highpass filter.
✅ The SM7b has a low level output. Get a Fethead or Cloudlifter if your preamp/interface can not provide enough gain.

🎸 Important Tip for Tracking Guitars:
Always record a DI-Signal of your guitar or bass!
➡️ The DI-Signal provides endless flexibility when it comes to mixing because you can re-amp the signal later or even process the DI before it hits the amp.
⚠️ If you only have the Amp-Signal you have to stick to the tone that you recorded. If you then want to change your tone, all you can do is to record again.
👍 An added bonus of recording a DI-Signal is, that it makes editing much easier.
🎛 Most guitar processors like Axe-FX, Helix, Kemper etc. already have a built in function to record a DI simultaneously, so make sure you use it!

Always do a Pre-Production!
🔊 The pre-production is your first opportunity to hear your song from the listeners perspective. You’ll get a much better idea of whether the song is in the right tempo, whether the arrangement works well, whether the playing really is tight etc.
⚠️ There is nothing worse than going into the studio only to find out that you need to rearrange a song or practice more.
😎 The more work you put in your pre-production the better the final product will be!
🎛 So get yourself some recording equipment and get started! A recording software, interface, headphones, microphone and at best a MIDI-Drum plugin is all you need.
👍 You can use it as a songwriting tool too. You’ll be able to easily rearrange a song or create entirely new sections or songs before bringing them to the rehearsal.

💿 What is Mastering about?
Many people think this stage of finalizing a song is only about making things loud, but there is a lot more to it!

🔊 Among other important aspects, mastering ensures that your songs translate well on all kinds of speaker systems.

Important Rule for Tracking Guitars:
ALWAYS put new strings on your guitar!
One thing that i hear very often from guitarists is that they “play in” the strings for a day or two and then record with them. The big problem with this approach is that you will never have a consistent tone if you have to split up your recording sessions or if you need to re-record a part of a song.
☝️I think a lot of players are just not used to the brightness that new strings provide cause they are playing on dead strings most of the time and compensate with brighter amp settings.
⚠️ BUT this compensation will never sound as good as fresh strings!
➡️ If you are tracking for an album or EP change strings for at least every 2-4 songs, depending on how much playing needs to be done for each song. I know, bass strings are much more expensive so try to track as much songs as possible in one session. Yes, you’ll need to buy a lot of strings but it’s totally worth it for the end result! 🤘

🎛 Quick Tip on Mixing Drums:
This is one of the best tricks I’ve learned to deal with cymbal bleed on drum recordings. I use it in almost every session on snare and especially on toms.
✂️ Once you have edited or gated your tom tracks you will still hear cymbal bleed in the sustain of the hit.
➡️ Use a multiband compressor starting at around 2k and set it to expand mode. This way the compressor expands on a hit and tames the cymbal bleed afterwards without affecting the lowend sustain of the drum.
⚠️ Use the sidechain filter and find the optimal frequency range to trigger the compressor.

MIDI-Bass instruments are an incredible tool for songwriting and can make the whole process a lot faster. In my opinion they will never replace a well played and good sounding real bass, but when used correctly they can work great in a mix. It really depends on the style of music.
🤖 MIDI-Bass can sound extremly, static and robotic, so make sure you go the extra mile and „humanize" your MIDI-Bass by using different velocitys and the available articulations.
🎛 Mixing tip: Combine both real bass and MIDI-Bass to get a more consistent lowend in your mix.

🎛 Quick Tip on Mixing Metal Guitars:
With heavy rhythm guitars you almost always have to deal with low end build up and resonances on chugging parts or open single note riffs. The most common way to tame those is by using a multiband compressor like Pro-MB. But sometimes you need to be a bit more surgical:
➡️ In this case I’m using Pro-Q3 as a dynamic eq, that is clamping down only on two problematic resonances, leaving the rest of the low end intact. You can put it in front of the multiband compressor to share the load or you can automate them, if the resonances only appear in certain riffs of a song.
➡️ In extreme cases you can use something like soothe2 to control all resonances happening in that area. But be careful here. You don’t wanna suck all the life out of your guitars!
⚠️With all of these techniques it’s very important to set the threshold so that the compression only kicks in when it’s really needed.
