As the only Black ophthalmologist in Central Texas from Dallas to San Antonio, Dr. Peprah’s statement is unfortunately too real. Grateful to for taking more strides in diversifying the field of ophthalmology, though more still needs to be done. Forever grateful to for giving me a community of ophthalmologists like myself to find the much needed representation that has supported me throughout my training and career. Shoutout to for posting this.

I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors and I am an embodiment of their wildest dreams.

Woman King— Go see it!

I’ve seen it twice already. I will see it many more times.

It’s a fantastic and powerful movie, based on true events, about the all-female warriors who protected the African kingdom of Dahomey in the country of Benin.

The entire cast was phenomenal, but I was particularly touched by the character of Amenza played by . It was so similar to my first name Amenze- a Nigerian name from Benin City, Edo State. It gave me chills thinking that armies of women fought to preserve the development of a more independent Africa so that people like my ancestors could build lives back home.

The Amenze that you know as Dr. Osa can stand firm in knowing who she is and where she comes from.

I am so grateful for the Dahomey Agojie and for the impact of their bravery on the lives of so so many, including, in some way, mine.

I loved this movie. It’s funny, and inspiring, and sacred. It’s about family and building legacy. I left the theater feeling simultaneously uplifted and grounded; a wonderful feeling.

I, Amenze, strongly encourage you to watch it. Enjoy!

George Floyd was murdered two years ago, today. And now we grieve the preventable and senseless murders of many more lives including so many children. And the machine keeps moving. Getting up for work today was hard for many reasons. Take a moment today to just be still. When you’re ready, gather yourself to pray with your legs, with your voice, with your vote.

Pray & VOTE.
