The word "fathom" comes from the Old English word meaning "outstretched arms," as in from fingertip to fingertip. As a verb, fathom is synonymous with embrace. By the 1600s, it had taken on a nautical meaning. The verb was used to mean a measurement by a sounding line. A sounding line is a rope and weight device used to measure water depth. Presently, "fathom" is used to refer to the act of getting to the bottom of something. I consider its multiple meanings as I present this exhibition. My work is multi-layered both in content and construction. I rely on materials and media that best illustrate the context and content of the story I am telling.
