Our team of college students across the US and in Guyana is driven to restore hope to Guyanese students left behind amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic and an ongoing political crisis. Our team creates and distributes high-quality exam preparation materials for 11- and 12- year old students lacking internet access who are scheduled to take the high-stakes Guyana National Grade Six Assessment. The exam, which is traditionally used as a secondary school placement exam, has less than a 50% passing rate and determines students’ secondary school eligibility. For 11-year old Caribbean students, passing the exam could mean the difference between having the opportunity to pursue a successful career or having limited resources for upward mobility.

We believe that it is unfair to test students without providing them with adequate preparation materials, especially considering that students have been unable to go to school due to the COVID-19 lockdown and 70% of families in Guyana lack internet access. Therefore, we have partnered with The Caribbean Voice, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, to serve as a fiscal sponsor for our emergency education campaign. In partnership with the Guyana Chronicle, we are printing and distributing 200,000 pages of our materials to students in regions lacking internet access through ground and air transportation.

We need your help to ensure students without internet access can have the opportunity to achieve their potential. For every donation of $2, a student in rural Guyana can access detailed explanations for all sections of their upcoming high-stakes exam. As the exam is scheduled for July 1st, we urgently need your assistance to reach as many students as possible before this deadline! Donate now at https://www.caribed.org/donate.html

Our Mission

In the Caribbean, primary school exit exams — with historically low pass rates — are used to transition students from primary to secondary education and, for these children, passing the exam could mean the difference between having the opportunity to pursue a successful career or having limited resources for upward mobility. School closures due to COVID-19 in a country where the majority of the population does not have internet access have left many students, particularly those in low-income families, preparing for the exams in the dark with little means to succeed. The lockdown will unfortunately weigh heavily on their education and future career success.

CaribEd, a team of university-level students from US and Guyana aims to restore hope to students facing academic disadvantages and shift local educational norms by providing a variety of engaging supplementary educational resources, with a focus on supporting low-income students outside of the urban core.

Since March 2020, we have been writing, editing, and publishing engaging learning resources for Caribbean primary exit exams. We distribute printed copies of our resources to communities lacking internet access and assist in the implementation of novel technological solutions using file-sharing techniques in rural regions. We also provide live support using Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp to families requiring additional assistance.
