Team Addis enjoyed celebrating the groundbreaking of Encore, a 59-unit mixed-use condo complex. Our District Director, Andrea Chmelik, joined the locally owned business developing this project, local leaders, and the wonderful Grover Beach community for this milestone in providing additional housing for the Central Coast.
Today, we bid farewell to our outstanding intern, Darius Rogness. As a California Polytechnic State University student, Darius has brought a calm and gentle spirit to our SLO District office. His positivity, attentive listening, hard work, and innovative ideas have impacted our team. Thank you, Darius, for all your contributions. We are excited to see what your future holds!
I had the pleasure of meeting Monterey Peninsula College President, Marshall Fullbright. His passion for art and education is incredibly inspiring, driving the growth and success of MPC. Yesterday, attended the Morro Coast Audubon Society (MCAS) Birding Field Trip & Annual June Picnic at El Chorro Regional Park. The event featured a delightful birding walk and an insightful talk on Conservation Ranching by Daniel Sinton of Avenales and Shell Creek Ranch and Grace Ferguson from the CA Audubon Conservation Ranching Program, highlighting the importance of prioritizing conservation to support bird populations and grassland ecosystems.
Today marks the two-year anniversary since the overturning of . As we reflect on this significant moment, let’s reaffirm our commitment to preserving reproductive freedom in California. While our state continues to value these essential rights, the fight is far from over. We must ensure our voices resonate beyond California’s borders as women’s rights are being stripped away nationwide.
HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER WAIT LIST OPENING ANNOUNCEMENT
The Housing Authority of the County of Monterey (HACM) is opening the wait list for the Housing Choice Voucher Program. The wait list is the primary way to have an opportunity to receive a Housing Choice Voucher. The wait list application process will last two weeks. Once the wait list application process closes, HACM will run a lottery to place the first 5,000 applicants on the wait list. Being placed on the wait list does not guarantee you will be eligible for the program.

Had the pleasure of meeting with Board President Dennis Webb and Executive Director Jess Brown from the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau. It was an important discussion about the challenges and successes facing our local agricultural community.
It was wonderful to tour the Teen Kitchen Project in Santa Cruz and get a sneak peek of their new campus! This incredible organization empowers teens by teaching them culinary skills while providing nutritious meals to families facing health crises. Their work is truly inspiring!
It was great meeting with the CASA of Santa Cruz County team! CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Santa Cruz County is dedicated to supporting and advocating for children in the foster care system. Their work ensures that every child has a voice and a brighter future.

I am proud to recognize the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County as the 2024 Non-profit of the Year. Their dedication during last year’s winter storms greatly impacted our community, showcasing the power of unity in tough times.
Founded after the 1982 flood, the Foundation supports local programs and addresses community issues through grants, events, and strategic advice. They have awarded $223 million in grants and manage $226 million in charitable assets.

attended the Change of Command Ceremony where Colonel Samuel W. Kline will pass the leadership of the United States Army Garrison Presidio of Monterey to Colonel Daniel S. Artino. The Presidio plays a crucial role in our nation’s defense, fostering language and cultural training for military personnel.
This weekend, I was honored to join community members and leaders for the 5th Annual Juneteenth Jubilee Celebration in Seaside, hosted by Monterey County Black Caucus. We commemorated the end of slavery in the United States and celebrated African American culture and heritage.
Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of our progress and the work that still lies ahead in our pursuit of freedom, justice, and equality. Celebrating Juneteenth allows us to honor and inspire a future rooted in equality for all in the region.
I was proud to present a resolution from the State Legislature to the Monterey County Black Caucus and to recognize this year's Juneteenth Jubilee King and Queen, Ron Johnson, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, and Annalisa Mitchell, Regional Director for the Amity Foundation. I also enjoyed honoring Annalisa as our Assembly District 30 "2024 Woman of the Year." You will get to learn more about her and our other honorees in the next few weeks!
I’m excited to announce that AB 1971 - the Student Privacy Protection Act, passed the Senate Education Committee with a 6-0 vote!
AB 1971 strengthens protections for student data, modernizing existing laws to keep up with technological advances.

I spent Saturday morning at Carmel-by-the-Sea and joined Mayor Potter at a community beach cleanup!
SUN Bucks is a new federally and state-funded program that provides free summer money to children when they are out of school for the summer. Good nutrition is essential to build young minds. This program provides an opportunity to continue a child's physical and social development while providing nutritious meals and helping children return to school ready to learn.

In celebration of California’s State Parks Week, I proudly presented ACR 208, a resolution that honors the incredible diversity and beauty of California’s State Park System. From deserts to mountains, beaches to forests, our 280 state parks preserve the natural and cultural history that makes California unique.
This year’s tagline, “This is where you live,” reminds us how fortunate we are to call these natural wonders home.
I met with representatives from the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UCFW) Western States Council this week to talk about legislation relating to the cannabis industry, specifically enforcement against the illicit cannabis industry, cannabis consumption lounges, and regulating intoxicating h**p products.
It’s the last day of Cal Poly Student and soon-to-be graduate Brenden Jacoby’s internship with our SLO District office team. Today we honor National Loving Day, commemorating the landmark Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia, which invalidated laws prohibiting in*******al marriage. This day celebrates the courage of Richard and Mildred Loving, whose love story challenged and overcame institutionalized racism, paving the way for greater acceptance and equality.
Today I presented my bill, AB 2295, the Justice for Survivors of Child Sexual Assault Act. I am grateful for the thoughtful remarks from my Senate colleagues, but most especially am grateful for brave survivors who testified in committee day. This is very challenging work, and I could not do it without them.
This morning, I enjoyed the 2024 California Women Lead Capitol Fellows Scholarship Awards Breakfast, honoring the 40 Capitol fellows who identify as women who received scholarships this year.
Our staff had a blast celebrating the 75th anniversary of Shell Beach Library, The Little Library That Could, along with the members of the community! Complete with fun games and festivities, and book signing by three authors, the event was an important reminder of the countless ways in which local libraries enrich our lives.
Thank you to Cal Poly ASI Student Government for hosting an inaugural Civic Engagement Day! Our District Director Andrea Chmelik joined Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg, San Luis Obispo City Council Member Emily Francis, Clint Weirick from the office of Senator Laird and James Sofranko from the office of Supervisor Paulding to answer questions about public service and how to engage about the issues of importance. Our office is always happy to hear from our constituents and to grow relationships within our community to provide better service!
