Serge Ibaka hopes to continue competing in the NBA
As the second month of free agency begins, veteran big man Serge Ibaka, who has played in the NBA for 14 seasons, is still waiting for his next opportunity.
Ibaka outlined how he can still support clubs in the league in a recent interview with Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter video link). The discussion was conducted in advance of the 2023–24 season.
“A lot of things that I can bring to a team… basketball, the experience of winning, playing with great players,” Ibaka said.
The 33-year-old recounted to Charania how his season as a deep bench reserve with the Bucks went wrong from his point of view. In the four-team trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Suns in February, he was traded to the Pacers and then released by Indiana. Ibaka stated that Milwaukee had informed him before the season began that he would be utilized as a replacement player for injuries.
“[Then-head coach Mike Budenholzer] told me to my face: Listen, you’re coming here, I promise you nothing — but you never know, it’s a long season, guys can have injuries, you have to stay ready,” Ibaka said (h/t to The Athletic’s Eric Nehm and other staffers).
That turned out to be untrue, and the team was coy about why it kept largely holding him out even when big men in the rotation ahead of him were injured.
“It got to some point where I cannot take this anymore,” Ibaka said. “I love this game so much, but if this is going to take my peace of mind, my joy, it’s not worth it. I earned my respect in this league. At least communicate. I’m not asking about playing, I’m just asking for communication.”
The 6'10" center/power forward averaged 4.1 PPG and 2.8 RPG last season in just 16 games with the Bucks. The 2019 NBA champion may not be his best All-Defensive Team self anymore, but he at least appears confident that he still has something to offer.
NBA Legend Responds to Son's Trade to the LA Clippers
Kenyon Martin Sr. briefly played for the Los Angeles Clippers eleven years ago. In the present, his son, who is 22 years old, will play on the same squad as his father. Kenyon Martin is obviously thrilled about the chance.
When Kenyon Martin Sr. appeared as a guest on Podcast P with Paul George, he spoke candidly about his son's NBA career with the Los Angeles Clippers.
“Oh absolutely [I’m excited KJ is playing for the Clippers]," Martin Sr. said. I’ve made LA home for the last eight years now, so yeah. Now I get to see him and I ain't got to pay for plane tickets, save some money. I just – he’s a winner in his heart. He despises losing, so for him to be able to play on a team that’s fighting for something. These dudes are fighting for legacy, fighting for [a] championship so they play different[ly]. And that’s the way he approaches the game night in and night out. The guys that he plays against know that. So for him to be in that environment and with an organization that knows him and appreciates him, man, I’m ecstatic.”
Although it's hard to realize, 11 years have passed since Martin Sr. was a Lob City member. It's even more difficult to imagine that the squad will soon start its fifth season with both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Despite all of their success, the Clippers have yet to claim an NBA Championship, but they have made it to their first Conference Finals. Los Angeles has sadly not had the opportunity to be healthy throughout the playoffs, which is ultimately the main cause of their lack of championships.

Basketball's speedier, shorter style was the highlight of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with Smithfield in Birmingham serving as the venue for an amazing 3x3 competition.
Myles Hesson, a homegrown star, and teammates Orlan Jackman, Kayne Henry, and Jamell Anderson—led by Ball Out 3x3 founder and CEO Julius Joseph—won basketball's first-ever gold medal for England, while Hannah Jump, Chantelle Handy, Cheridene Green, and Shanice Beckford-Norton—who represented England's women—finished the night with a well-earned silver medal.

NBA Health Care Fraud Ringleader Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison
Reuters, New York, August 3 According to federal prosecutors, a former National Basketball Association player organized a "brazen" scam involving at least 19 other players to trick the league health plan into shelling out millions of dollars for fictitious medical procedures. The former player was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday.
Terrence Williams, 36, admitted guilt to conspiring to commit health care and wire fraud, as well as aggravated identity theft, last August. Williams played for the New Jersey Nets and three other teams between 2009 and 2013.
He was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni in Manhattan federal court to forfeit $2.5 million in addition to paying restitution to the NBA Players' Health and Welfare Benefit Plan and, in compliance with his plea deal, forfeit $653,673.
Prior to his arrest in October 2021, Williams, a father of six, resided in Seattle, where he was born and raised.
Since May 2022, he has been detained in Brooklyn after being accused by the prosecution of threatening a witness via text messages.
Williams' legal counsel did not reply to requests for comment right away. Williams wanted no more than 50 months in prison, while the prosecution had asked for a 10- to 12-year sentence.
Williams was charged with enlisting players in exchange for at least $300,000 in payments to submit phony invoices for medical and dental procedures that were never carried out.
He was also charged with pretending to be a health plan manager and contesting a reimbursement to "frighten" another athlete who hadn't given him a kickback to reconnect with him.
The offenders received $2.5 million in fraudulent gains, according to the prosecution, which claimed that at least $5 million in bogus claims had been made.
There were situations where bills purportedly proved that Tony Allen, a former Boston Celtics player, and another player had crowns placed on the same six teeth on the same day.
Williams, the plan's mastermind, "turbocharged the conspiracy," according to the prosecution.
According to court records, more than half of the 24 people accused in the investigation have admitted guilt. The defendants include a chiropractor, a doctor, and a dentist.
Allen, a six-time NBA All-Defensive Team member, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge and will be sentenced on August 8. Prosecutors suggested a sentence of imprisonment of less than 21 months, mentioning his acknowledgment of guilt and desire to atone.
