So Simple Sight Words

So Simple Sight Words

Sight Word “cheer” creator & teacher of 33 years. Music, movement, and reading go hand in hand!

📚 A book can open up a completely new world.

I took the sight words teaching methods I developed over my 33-year teaching career and created an online program unlike any other. ⤵️

So Simple Sight Words contains 90 essential sight words students need to be able to readily access to promote fluency while reading and writing. Using skills all children already have—the ability to move, make noise, and have fun—learning to spell and read in this manner is not only time—efficient and enjoyable but also lowers the affective filter (stress level) of the learner.

The original program released on DVD in 2004 has been used in homes and schools in 27 states. It's exciting to have the program available using updated technology and additional word cheers! Send me a DM or check out my website for more information.

There are certain letters that my students always seemed to struggle differentiating—J & T and F & T definitely made the list. Check out two new free worksheets available on my site to help with this exact problem.

It’s “Which Word Wednesday!” Use the clues to find which word we’re looking for today! Here’s how to play! 🔍

1️⃣ Look at all of the words, read them, and cheer them if you use the So Simple Sight Words program.

2️⃣ Look at the clue and find 3 words that follow its rule.

3️⃣ Use the next clue to eliminate a word from the three selected words.

4️⃣ Use the last clue to eliminate another and find the answer!

🍎 When I retired and finally cleaned out my “teacher bag” for the very last time, I found this worn (and it obviously met a leaky water bottle at some point!) “cheat sheet” that I wrote for my class.

“Respect” is a big word that can be hard for 6 year olds to understand, so I broke it down for them to make it a more understandable concept. Having this written on the board where my students could reference it made it SO much easier!

Here’s a few scenarios this could apply to and some responses to use:

-Eats eraser off pencil: “Are you showing care for your tools?” (Property/belongings)

-Says, “I’m stupid” when frustrated: “Are you showing honor to yourself for your hard work? (Self)

-Says, “You’re stupid” to a peer: “Are you showing politeness and honor to your classmate? (Peers)

-Ignores the playground duty: “Did you show honor to the adult? Did you make him/her feel important with your actions?” (Adults they can trust)

-Leaves paper towels all over the bathroom: “Are you showing care for your school?” (Institutions—this word can be used as broadly or narrowly as is fitting)

What’s your favorite bedtime story? 📚

Building towers isn’t just fun—it encourages kids to develop skills around teamwork, like sharing ideas, listening, and negotiating. Here’s a memory from a fun Friday activity. My students were so excited to see how high they could make their tower. They were even allowed to climb on tables (safely) to build the tower as high as they could. 🏗

Here's me in 2019 receiving the San Diego State University Exemplary Guide Teacher Award. I was so honored (and still am)! This recognition was amazing but for me the the greatest award will always be watching students gain confidence as they master language skills. 🏆
