🎃👻 Halloween PSA❗
Animal shelters and rescue organizations typically experience an increase in lost pets in the days following Halloween ⚠️. To avoid the frightening situation of your pet getting lost, secure them inside your home, update their ID tag/microchip database info and be on the lookout for open doors they can escape from.
❗Another important reminder: If you can, help a homeless black cat 🐈⬛ out by letting them stay in your home or garage🏠 during the festivities. Most folks are nice, but Halloween is an unsafe time, especially for black cats.
Water should be served at room temperature. If you want to give your pet something cool to help combat the heat, try giving them a frozen treat instead. -Credit: Dr. Judy Morgan

Happy National Dog Mom's Day!!
What Makes YOU not just a pet parent, but also a bona-fide dog mom (or Dad)? Example: Do you think your friend's kids are spoiled, but your dog can never have enough toys & treats; if your dog falls asleep on your lap, do you feel morally obliged not to move, etc, etc. Let us know what makes YOU a bona-fide Dog mom (or dad) in comments below!!
Q: WHAT IS A SPECIES APPROPRIATE DIET??
A: It's a diet that is appropriate for a specific species. In order to thrive, an animal must eat a diet that its species is meant (or has evolved) to eat which for dogs is raw food. In the documentary "Pet Fooled", Dr. Karen Becker talks about how Hummingbirds cannot survive if they don't eat nectar. Why...because it's inappropriate for their species. If you try to feed them something else, they die; same with cats, rabbits, cows, horses, etc. They all have species appropriate diets that they must eat to thrive & survive. Dogs may survive for a time when being fed kibble or any species inappropriate diet, but they will never 'thrive' (will suffer from all kinds of illnesses and health issues as they age) and will have a much shorter life span than a dog on a species appropriate diet.

HAPPY NATIONAL PET DAY!!
HAPPY EASTER!!
Elevated levels of Vitamin D can lead to Vitamin D toxicity that may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, muscle spasms, convulsions, renal (kidney) failure & DEATH.
This is by no means the first time kibble, canned foods and/or RX foods have been recalled because of this issue. The excess Vitamin D recalls began on November 2, 2018 with a recall from Natural Life Pet Products and Nutrisca dry dog foods. & seven more dry dog food recalls (by 13 brands) occurred up to December 5, 2018 for this issue. For 8 weeks after that, we saw no new excess Vitamin D recalls, and then on January 31, 2019 we learned of a Hill’s Pet Nutrition recall for 25 different varieties of Science Diet/Prescription Diet canned dog foods. There were reports of HUNDREDS of dogs dying after being fed this food with excess Vitamin D levels! Why keep playing Russian Roulette with your dogs health by feeding kibble or RX foods when you don't have to?? Purina Pro Plan EI dog food recall – Truth about Pet Food Knowing the truth can save your pet's life
This is sooo true!! It's been my experience that MANY (if not MOST) times a person tells me the vet has recommended euthanasia, that that dog can be turned around with diet and protocols recommended for their particular illness and live many more years. Keep your dogs safe over New Years
(In the United States, the only other day on which more pets go missing is the Fourth of July).
Ensure that they are wearing a visible & easy-to-read ID on their collar (harness for small dogs). If microchipped, make sure that the contact information is up to date! Many people forget to update this information when things change.
Use their ‘comfort’ items to ease their anxiety during fireworks, i.e. treats, blankets, beds, crates, Thundershirt, etc). You can find a homemade version of the Thundershirt in comments below if you don’t have one.
Keep them inside in a secure room or crate (if they are used to a crate) until all fireworks have stopped. If you have a room without windows, that would be preferable. If not, try to black out the site and sound of fireworks as much as possible and try to distract them with music/tv (to muffle the sounds of the fireworks), favorite toys, treats, etc.
Make sure that they get a lot of exercise throughout the day (in advance of the fireworks) to tire them out (and keep them calm and relaxed). If the dog has less energy, the less he’ll be prone to panic during the fireworks.
Make sure they relieve themselves outside before the fireworks start and then again after they stop. You may think it’s ok to take them out during the fireworks if you are with them or have them on a leash but that’s been proven time & time again not to be the case. They have the natural instinct to run and find shelter when they are scared.
Start giving them Rescue Remedy for Pets as far in advance as possible. You may be able to get this from your vet or at a local store. This is a safe, natural Bach Flower stress relief and recommended by veterinarians for calming your cat or dog during stressful situations.
Good Luck & Happy New Year!

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!
In this article are some simple tips to ensure a humane winter and help you prioritize your pets’ safety. Reminder: It’s a common misconception that dogs and cats are more resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur. Like people, animals are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia.

An Ounce of Prevention
Reminder that some of your Christmas Dinner foods can be hazardous to your pup's health.
Bread dough, in particular, is a double whammy because of the potential for yeast poisoning. It can cause a fatal stomach torsion as well as alcohol poisoning.
What would be occurring sitting on your kitchen counter ends up occurring in your pet’s stomach,” according to Dr. Renee Schmid (a board-certified veterinary toxicologist at Pet Poison Helpline. That dough rises and causes a stretching of the stomach, or a distention. And then that yeast as it ferments produces ethanol, an alcohol. So these animals can develop alcohol poisoning as well as yeast poisoning.
If you suspect your dog has ingested yeast, seek veterinary treatment right away. Other dangerous foods to watch out for include cooked turkey bones, turkey grease, chocolate, grapes, raisins, and onions.
And if you are baking bread as part of your Christmas meal this year, make sure to let it rise far away from your dog’s reach, like on top of the refrigerator. No one wants to spend the holidays in the ER.
